Hawick Lau’s Remuneration Shoots Up to 200,000 RMB Per Episode

For many TVB fans, it is fascinating and interesting to discover that Hawick Lau (劉愷威), who once struggled to get cast in leading roles in TVB dramas, has now become one of mainland China’s highest-paid television stars. Landing on number 49 in Forbes’ China Celebrity 100 List for 2013, Hawick was reported to have earned 29.9 million RMB last year.

Now back in Hong Kong to film Wong Jing’s (王晶) upcoming television drama Across Heaven and Earth <縱橫天地>, which is also co-produced by TVB, Hawick’s remuneration per episode has jumped from $10,000 HKD per episode to 200,000 RMB per episode – that is more than twenty times the amount of his original TVB salary ten years ago.

According to various reports, Hawick also received star treatment during his filming days in Hong Kong. Unlike many TVB stars, Hawick only filmed eight hours a day and had his own specialized mini-van to take him back to his Mid-levels home every day. There were also reports claiming that Hawick has recently been searching for a new house, to prepare for his alleged upcoming wedding with girlfriend Yang Mi (楊冪).

Costarring with Liza Wang (汪明荃), Angie Chiu (趙雅芝), Edwin Siu (蕭正楠), and Kenny Wong (黃德斌), Hawick will be starring as the central character in Wong Jing’s television epic. He plays Cho Chi Yuen, the second son of businesswoman Kwan Yeuk Nam, portrayed by Liza Wang. Though Yuen initially has no interest in his family’s business, believing that his elder brother, Chi Wang (Kenny Wong) as the empire’s true successor, Yuen is driven to a point of no return when Wang attempts to incarcerate him.

Wayne Lai (黎耀祥), Kate Tsui (徐子珊), and Selena Li (李詩韻) will also guest star in Across Heaven and Earth.

    1. I wonder how much he will get for filming this series I wonder will he reach another level after this series like chi lam

      1. All I know bout this guy is his a good actor he wouldn’t be back at tvb if it wasn’t for Wong jing and his never been popular in tvb but its good to hear about his success this days

  1. I have to admit for an almost 40 yo, he still looks OK yummy. haha…lol

    1. I agree with u windy. He looks more yummy now than before. Haha

      1. I know, we never care for his too sweet boyish image when he was in TVB. But now he looks more badasszzz. So he definitely matured in a yummy way.

  2. “Unlike many TVB stars, Hawick only filmed eight hours a day and had his own specialized mini-van to take him back to his Mid-levels home every day. ”

Soooo…. does his colleagues hate him then? And is he THAT famous to trump everyone else? Ok, maybe he is after that serial abuser boyfriend wreck of a series.

  3. Definitely over-rated and obscenely over-paid! He’s just one very lucky dude cos his acting is really the pits. For a fraction of the sum he’s being paid, I’m sure there’s someone else who can do the job much better than him. Suckers all!!

    1. I beg to differ, as i stated above when he was in TVB, his roles are all very boyishly cute so never care much for this acting to shine. The only mainland series I watched of him ‘Sealed With A Kiss’ he portrays such a psychotic yet sensible abuser so well that you can definitely see some of his acting chops unlike his TVB days. But of course the role itself is admirable even thou it’s a sick character so it’s of LUCK that comes in again for him to really shine thru and finally breakthru china as well. Not to mention he knows how to pick a POPULAR g/f these days, so a lot luck & timing comes into play too.

      1. Never made any impression on me with his acting, always very wooden even when he crossed over to atv and filmed that awful series with Patrick Tam. Didn’t hear of him after that and suddenly boom! he’s making this kind of money in mainland. No wonder every one wants to go there for that pot of gold. But i hate mainland series for all the cutesy actresses, the way they speak gives me goose bumps. Used to be a fan of Kevin Cheng but since he went to china, it’s adios to him; tried watching Ip man, was so bad, i couldn’t watch beyond a couple of episodes. I’d rather watch Ruco Chan, he’s more awesome actor than Hawick by miles and miles. He’s hot and manly and sings and acts well.

      2. kit-kat,
agree, but that god awful series w/Patrick Tam was just plain awful period. I like Patrick Tam but that awful series is just bad everything so no one will leave an impression on any of us. haha…I neve like Kevin Cheng either but he’s been around for a long time as well so LUCK was on his side when he finally nailed it w/that china ancient drama. The only mainland series i managed to finish is Sealed With A Kiss so you can guess I don’t like them either. But Hawick Lau did leave an impression from this series and that’s how he became BOOM, hot in china so he dif got his LUCK outside of cheap TVB. RUCO, gosh I couldn’t agree more. He can sing, act so hopefully he gets more recognized. I haven’t watched TVB these days but I am watching Brother’s Keeper b/c of Ruco, I dislike the other characters but at least it’s a bearable series @ this moment.

      3. @windy, yes it left an impression on me, a BAD one that is, that just wouldn’t erase from my mind!
Omg, Ruco in BK is well beyond hot and gorgeous (esp wearing shades and in police inspector uniform, drools…..) and oh so cool and stylish in those action scenes (basketball scene in episode 10…wow). From his action scenes to his sweet scenes with linda to his emotional scenes with his mom and his brother to his confrontation scenes with his dad and that gangster friend, love every aspect of his acting. Cant get enough of him!

      4. =kit-kat
I know and I agree 1000% about RUCO. He’s so underrated from TVB, ATV n now TVB again. So I am glad to see him finally in a lead even thou he will portray a bad guy I don’t care, he’s enjoyable to watch. I don’t like Linda Chung pair up thou but whatever haha… This is the only TVB series I have tried so far this year n can passed 3 episodes. Ruco was in a few other series, I couldn’t even finish it.

  4. why his face never ring a bell?. I don’t remember him at all..is he in any TVB series?. Which one?.

      1. he also played in virtues of harmony 1 as the ‘server’ of bernice (princess)

    1. He was in that really long drama series “A Kindred Spirit 真情” and in Virtues of Harmony 1 & 2. In the first one he was Bernice’s character’s best friend and eunuch .

    2. the last tvb drama i watched from him was ‘my family’, with alex fong and shirley yeung.

he was also in ‘the shades of truth’, as a police man i think

    3. He was also in At the Threshold of an Era as Gallen Lo’s younger brother but he disappeared in the middle of the show (went to prison, I think).

He’s been in other pretty famous TVB series, but never the lead so not surprising that you don’t remember him.

    4. If I said that he is veteran actor Lau Dan’s son, would that ring a bell??

    5. The only series that I saw of him in TVB was Virtues of Harmony 1 as Bernice’s servant, the fake eunuch.

  5. Somehow, these children of established actors don’t seem to do well in TVB – Hawick, Timmy Hung, Sam Chan, Benji Chiang. Probably overshadowed by their fathers’ fame. Glad Hawick managed to get his break in the mainland market.

    1. True, he actually made a good move and with good timing soo since his mandarin is pretty rusty. But I guess no one in HK has worse Mandarin than Ekin Cheng? ahha…OMG…That dude is something else.

  6. I really like him in 1000 teardrops with Athena, the Spell of Fragrance with Michelle, and this other series with him with Nicky Wu’s ex wife, I forgot the title. I was surprise to see him In Mainland series at first, and I though he did well those that I;ve seen him in. I started to really like him, he is also very handsome! =)
