Hu Ge Hopes to Break Away from Idol Image

Popular Mainland actor Hu Ge (胡歌) has taken a break from his historical costume series to bring fans modern drama Inspiration for Life <生活啟示錄>. Although the 31-year-old has an established presence in the idol market, he is willing to take a risk in order to prove that he can also attract a wider audience.

Hu Ge shot to stardom following 2005’s period fantasy drama Chinese Paladin <仙劍奇俠傳>. With a classically handsome face that perfectly fits the genre, he has since been cast in a string of similar period serials, such as 2008’s The Legend of Condor Heroes <射鵰英雄傳>, 2012’s Xuan Yuan Sword: Scar of Sky <軒轅劍之天之痕>, and the upcoming Nirvana in Fire <瑯琊榜>. When he is not putting on a wig or wielding a sword, Hu Ge is off chasing love and adventure in upbeat series aimed at today’s idol-obsessed youths.

After a decade of portraying similar roles, Hu Ge is ready for new challenges. In Inspiration for Life, which will premiere in China on May 22, he plays ambitious computer engineer Bao Jia Ming who falls in love with an older, divorced woman, Yu Xiao Qiang (played by Yan Ni 閆妮). Despite his parents’ disapproval, Jia Ming continues to nurture their love and even agrees to care for Xiao Qiang’s illegitimate child.

Unlike his usual roles, Hu Ge’s new character must navigate through real life challenges armed only with courage and determination. Playing a father for the first time, he is finally able to present a more mature image on screen. His new role also gave him the opportunity to discover something about himself. After briefly experiencing fatherhood on set, Hu Ge is even more determined now to become the best father he can be when it is time to start a family.

Even though the series has yet to air, fans are already looking forward to seeing their idol in a different light. Finally landing a potential breakthrough, Hu Ge also expressed excitement and feels that the role came at the right time. “I am already over thirty, it is time to put out works that middle aged uncles and aunties would watch. I hope to use this series to show everyone that I can portray roles that speak to a wide audience. This is my tenth year in the industry. It’s as if I have walked a full circle, and is now time to set off anew.”

  1. I absolutely adore Hu Ge. I hope he does break through the idol image! This photo dose not do him any justice! He is quite handsome on screen! I think he did a fantastic job in Yang Clan series! He was also good in Unbeatable! There so much potential for him, I am glad he is breaking out of those silly roles. I think he will find more success~!

    1. I adore Hu Ge too and hope he gets a breakthrough as well. I hope to see him in more great series.

  2. Didn’t think he could still pass for an idol. He looks his age really.

    1. That is a bad photo of him. He looks way younger in other photos and on screen.

  3. I think he looks younger when he has the makeup/wig/costumes on for historical dramas. He looks more his age when he’s in contemporary dramas so it does look a little off when he has to play younger characters. I really think his face suits historical dramas so I hope he doesn’t completely give those up. Wish him the best of luck in the future endeavors though!

  4. wo~! what happened to him?! he looks like 40 in the pic! bad pic or what?

  5. “Playing a father for the first time……. After briefly experiencing fatherhood on set….”

It’s not the first time he played a father. In 2003, Hu Ge had a step dad role in 蒲公英.

  6. i can see the scars on my beautiful Hu Ge’s face regardless of that, my love for him never end and i am thankful he survived. because of those scars it does make it seem like he looks older for those who is wondering.
