Jessica Hsuan Turns Down TVB Role Once Again

Above: Jessica Hsuan rejected filming “Tiger Cubs 2” for TVB.

After turning down TVB’s offer to reprise her role as Senior Inspector Chong in Tiger Cubs  <飛虎 II>, Jessica Hsuan (宣萱) continued to focus her acting career in mainland China. Yesterday, Jessica returned to Hong Kong to attend a charity event hosted by good friend, Sharon Kwok (郭秀雲).

Jessica looked much fuller and healthier. The high-spirited Jessica admitted, “I’ve been shooting at Hengdian [World Studios] for the last two months. There are a lot of places to eat there!”

Jessica then added with a laugh, “I remember one time, the director told me to tighten my stomach, but I was already doing it! After that realization, I stopped eating as much. I don’t want to get fat again.”

Although the 42-year-old actress ended her per-series contract with TVB last year, she stressed that she still has good relations with her former management company. TVB had approached her about shooting a new drama a while ago. “I turned down the offer. The role wasn’t right for me. I don’t want to portray the same characters over and over again. However, I was offered a villain role in a mainland Chinese drama, and I agreed to do it immediately. I get to hit people!” exclaimed Jessica.

Was her rejection of TVB stemmed by the station’s recent low ratings? “Not at all. I even turned down [Tiger Cubs 2]. I’m just waiting for a role that suits me.”

Asked if TVB’s rival station HKTV had offered her a role in a new drama, Jessica said, “They did, but I said no. It’s a good thing for Hong Kong to have constructive competition though. It benefits the actors.” Jessica also praised HKTV productions for their professionalism and high quality. “I went on set to a HKTV drama before. It was like watching a movie getting filmed. It’s very impressive.”

    1. I have seen a few pics, and even some series where she looks a bit pudgy. – Not like heffer huge, but yeah, she looks a lot better when shes thinner.
I think her face gains weight more than the rest of her, it rounds out a bit and probably makes her look more weighty than she actually is.

  1. Random comment, but anyone seen the first episode of HKTV’s “Police Boundaries” yet? Are they planning on uploading the whole thing on Youtube…?

    1. Yes, they are….it’s already uploaded on Youtube (entire first episode). They promised to upload it Friday night at 9:30pm (HKT) and that’s exactly what they did. Should go check it out….

      1. What an action-packed episode! Can’t wait for more 😀

      2. Oh my, that was amazing. I can’t wait for more. Thanks for the link!

    2. Sorry, I should have clarified that I’ve already seen it. I was just wondering whether they’re going to make this a regular thing on Youtube. (Are they not expecting their licence to be granted any time soon?) The trailer didn’t do much for me, but the episode itself was much better than I expected – especially the last 10 minutes. I want more!

      1. @skinnymocha: It’s hard to say…but my personal feeling is that they are eventually going to release the first episodes for the rest of the series if the license doesn’t come soon. Reason I say this is because that’s actually what they did with the episode 1 trailers (based on initial information from HKTV people, they originally weren’t planning to release the clips for all the series – they were only planning on doing 1 or 2 just to test the waters….but due to the overwhelming response from audiences, they decided to do the other trailers as well). So who knows…if audiences push hard enough (and this license thing continues to get delayed), we might get to see the full first episodes for the other series too….

      2. Hmm. I’m just watching and ‘liking’ their videos in order to show my support. I feel bad for the cast and crew if all their hard work doesn’t see the light of day. But if this licence issue drags on any further, imagine having to wait at least another year or two for the next episode… Hopefully it won’t turn out like Final Fantasy Versus where fans have waited years upon years.

      3. Holy cow. They’ve dragged it on long enough that they’ve even bothered to rename it to Final Fantasy XV.

      4. Well, NowTV and CableTV is going to bet 2015 for the license renewal. The year of TVB and whats left of ATV licenses expires in 2015.

  2. so sad she turned down tiger cubs 2, I like the pairing of her and joe a whole lot more than linda….*sigh*

  3. i find she don’t hv the ‘likeability’ factor. her acting skills are not up to par too…but she does the sour puss face well!!!

  4. I find TVB tend to type cast their seasonal actor/actress. They always cast Jessica in modern, career type of role; so of course she turn it down. Actor/actress that establish and have $ they choose role base on their interest and challenge. It’s also good for the audience to see them in different roles.. If TVB offer challenging roles a lot of the them will come back. I try to watch a few TVB in the last few years and honestly could not finish it. The caliber, plot and acting mainland China series really outdone TVB. This company really need to wake up!

  5. Beside role, scriptwriter and film director is equally important. Was so disappointed to watch her in Dicey Business along with MM and BA.

  6. What TVB really lacks in the past decade is a good script writer. If you watch Jessica in the 1990s the dramas were quite good and she acted amazing but in the last few years the TVB drama quality dropped considerably – with poor scripts you could be an amazing actor and the show would still suck. Unfortunately TVB can no longer really compete with the quality of production that China has and even loses to Taiwan.

    1. Totally agree that they are lacking in other areas and not just the cast members. But sadly many just go for the cast and think that if their favorite actor or actress is in a series that it is good. TVB really cannot compete with China or even Taiwan now. Sadly, I think they even lose to Korea as well.

      1. Though TVB’s script standard has drop considerably, but they are still way ahead of Taiwan. And in terms of actors & actresses, I still prefer TVB’s to those from china & Taiwan.

      2. HeTieShou – thanks for recommending the DVD guy to me -I ended up getting all 5 seasons of File of Justice 🙂

Man, this series is just even more awesome in comparison to what TVB is coming up with lately!!!

      3. @Ebbie,
I don’t think TVB is above Taiwan but that is down to a matter of opinion. I guess you are just a big TVB or HK series fan that you just don’t like anything else that is non TVB or Hk. I personally think TVB loses to Taiwan now and of course China in some aspects.

        @Dr. M,
You are very welcome and I am sooo glad that Tom(the DVD guy) was able to help you get the File of Justice DVDs. He can help you get other stuff too if you are ever interested, you can always contact him and he will gladly help you. Hope you are enjoying!!

TVB’s recent series are so disappointing. My mom just saw A great Way to Care 2 and complained so much and says TVB series are just so boring and bad lately.
