Kate Tsui Gives Best Performance in “Tomorrow is Another Day”

*Spoilers*

Although portraying an enforcement officer numerous times in the past, Kate Tsui (徐子珊) brings freshness to her character, a lively and caring correctional officer, in new TVB drama, Tomorrow is Another Day <再戰明天>.

A Chance For TV Queen

In the drama, Kate has a relationship with mentor Lawrence Ng (吳啟華), who is 18 years her senior.  Kate’s character deeply cares about the prisoners in the correctional institute, but learned to have a stronger grip on her emotions after one of the inmates, Harriet Yeung (楊詩敏), attempted suicide.

Although Kate simply regarded Harriet as a friend, the inmate had a romantic crush on her. After Kate kindly turned down Harriet’s confession, Harriet was unable to handle the rejection and attempted to kill herself. When Kate found out about the suicide, she was filled with guilt and suffered a mental breakdown. Undergoing a rollercoaster of emotions, Kate’s character considered suicide.

Kate disclosed, “When I was filming, I had to cultivate my emotions. I really wanted to complete the scene in one take. Since there were so many different angles that needed to be filmed, I had to cry all night!”

Emotional scenes are not new to Kate, but her impressive performance earned praise from the producer, who commented that Kate’s acting qualifies her for the TV Queen award. Kate said, “Thinking [about the awards] too much is very tiring! I don’t choose my roles based on whether they are award-worthy. I give my best performance each time.”

    1. Totally agree! Her character is really conflicting. She acts & talk like a teenager whenever she wears casual or with Man. When she puts on the uniform, she plays this serious, mature & witty correctional officer. To me, Kate seems to play 2 different characters. With that annoying baby look and voice, I just can’t picture her as an officer.

      1. That’s what I originally thought. But realistically, people do tend to act differently in front of different people. I know that when I’m around my family or close friends I can act immature and obnoxious. I’m quiet and shy in front of elders I don’t see often. And, I try to be mature in front of kids, since they pick things up fast. I’m probably just trying to justify Kate’s actions, but I will admit that it does seem conflicting on the outside…

      2. @her
agree! People tend to act in a certain way with certain people. I think Kaka acts like a baby/ teenage just around her “uncle Man” – like a little wants attention

    2. Thought it’s one of Kate’s weaker performances. She’s the reason I find it hard to watch this series!

  1. really??? her character is like a baby ! i guess their trying to define the age differences by making her sound and act young … but its exaggerated ! its either she was given a crappy character personality to act or her acting isnt her best.

    1. She doesn’t need to act young. She is young, 20 years junior to Lawrence Ng in real life, so her acting is put on and comes out very fake.

  2. Kate was surprisingly good in that scene where her character recounted being molested as a child.

The emotions were almost perfectly rendered – no OTT acting at all. Which is refreshing, given how she’s performed in previous roles.

This is by far her best role over the years. I think she’s much better suited to playing restrained, emotionally inward characters.

    1. I agree with u.Kate is really good in TIAD. I enjoy the drama very much. She can play so many different roles in all the drama she acted in unlike those stereotype who can only take on one type of character. She deserve the award after giving her best for so many years

    1. Lawrence as the love interest of any actress younger than him by 10 years or more is weird. He has that kind of “uncle” look that creeps you out when he acts as their love interest. There are men who look good paired with younger women and there’re those who look creepy. Lawrence belongs to the second category. An example of the first category is probably Michael Miu.

      1. yes, very creepy especially because of his cat3 movie past.

      2. He has never acted in cat III movies, what you talking about?

In fact, I don’t seen him in any movies at all, only confined t TV all the time.

      3. “In 1991 Lawrence starred in the infamous erotic film Sex and Zen (玉蒲團之偷情寶鑑) alongside Amy Yip. Although the it was a massive success at the box office, Lawrence mentioned in an interview that he was embarrassed for having made it and wishes that he instead be known for his serious character roles in drama TV series.”

    2. I actually find this combination quite refreshing. Not that bad in my opinion… Since its fresh, maybe it would feel a little weird at first, but I really enjoy their love line. Personal Opinion =)

  3. Kate did a good job in this drama especially the emotional scenes. I can feel her pain inside….Kate’s story is very touching. It’s true that sometimes the scar come from inside even harder to get rid and forget.

    1. I’m not a fan of Kate but I am also serious at work but very girly with my bf and at home lol..

      1. Yup….Me too….At work I’m very serious, outside of work I’m a carefree person. In other words, I use my brain more at work…. Lol

  4. Hope Kate will get the award for her performance in “Tomorrow is Another Day”. Kate deserves some praises for all of her hard work after all these years 🙂

      1. 3 against 1 her acting has not improve she talks like she’s whinning dontlike her at all!!!

    1. No, she’s annoying in the drama. Horrible acting and whiney voice.

      1. Her acting has improved, what’s wrong with a whiney voice? Personally i have a high pitch voice and it appears to be whiney. Kate probably has a high pitch voice in real life. Realistically id rather have a high pitch voice than a deep or monotone voice

    2. So agree! Kate’s acting is beyond horrible , she kinda spoils any show that she’s in!

  5. Is this her natural voice? It’s too cute.
But Lawrence is doing a good job as Uncle Man and Man sir. I do love the romantic side of him…there is a butterfly in the tummy feeling.

    1. No, Kate’s voice doesn’t have baby voice, I think she speaks that way because the character requires it

  6. As a prison officer, Kate is doing a good job. But out of her uniform, she is way too cute. She is acting like a sweet young thing with Uncle Man. Her dressing is yucky.

    1. I like when she’s in her officer role… she doesn’t try to act all cute which appears very pretentious. And outside of her uniform, she dresses like a granny. And what’s with that ugly haircut?!

  7. I find the comments are usually half says horrible and half says good acting. Really don’t know which one is right. Don’t feel like watching this awkward pairing due to the big age difference. Kate’s hair is so yuck.

  8. I don’t know if Kate is qualified to be TV Queen or not, I haven’t watched that many TVB series this year so I can’t comment about TV queen. But I think Kate is doing really well in this drama. Her character – Kaka – is a happy girl outside and wounds inside. She grew up without the love of her parents, she wants love, she want attention, her Uncle Man took care of her, I think she’s doing that just in habit of a little girl wanting attention. and another reason, she pretends to be happy to hide all her pain inside. When she’s at work, she’s a different person because her job requires that. Some of people here state that Kaka is completely 2 different, people, I think that the purpose of the producer, he wants kaka to be different inside and outside that’s why he praises Kate.
I met kate and talked to her, she didn’t have baby voice so I think the character requires that element

    1. Agreed! Kate portrays Kaka’s character really well and bring it to life. This could be one of her breakthrough role after Ah Pat.

    2. It’s sad how some people just don’t get this, and then went ‘omg, her cute voice is annoying, and what’s up with these 2 personalities’. Even in real life, there are people who bubbly and silly but dead serious in work.

And I totally agree this series is best of this year so far for me, but then I haven’t watched many tvb series lately. This series is quite refreshing, and Kate did a surprisingly good job 🙂

      1. I understand how people can be different outside of work, especially a correctional office. But Kate acts and speaks like a teenage girl off work. Yes, she’s 20 years his junior, but she’s an adult in her 20s. The baby voice doesn’t work. The two sides of her are just two completely different people like she has multiply personalities.

      2. Btw, I’m not commenting on her acting, just her character. So if she was told to speak and act this way then she’s doing a fine job.

      3. @little fishy
I’m an example of different personalities at work and outside work too. My job requires professional and serious, but outside work I’m outgoing and childlike. So Kaka is absolutely normal to me

      4. Yup, My best friends and I are such people. We are often serious and quite close-mouthed in working . But when we are together, we chat a lot, laugh a lot, and even do some crazy things in karaoke shop. 😆 . Some colleagues find it surprising to meet me outside work.

  9. I think she did very very well, perhaps her personal best. However I am distracted by how tight her face looks when she is crying hard. She should stop with whatever she is doing to her face.

And I find her love story with her Uncle Man exceedingly disturbing. Not on her part, but on Uncle Man. Perhaps there should have been a 10 year separation between her childhood and her adulthood instead of him being her constant companion. Some lines you can’t cross Uncle Man!

And I find that scene that young Kaka being attacked also disturbing. The actress looks like a young girl. TVB, realistic is good but some scenes are not meant to be shown.

    1. I think so too, showing a 8 years old girl was attacked is quite uneasy to watch. And the little actress is about 8 years old too

    2. That scene wasn’t too revealing so I guess it wasn’t that disturbing because it was very quick. Blink and the scene moves on.

I agree with you for Kate Tsui’s performance. She has matured as an actress and I quite like her portrayal as a bubbly, lively girl filled with inner demons from her past. This series has got to be one of the most meaningful that TVB has produced in years.

      1. A pity that HK viewers think otherwise with both the lack of word of mouth and ratings. I guess the prison theme doesn’t really resonate with viewers or appear particularly interesting. I too wasn’t too looking forwards to watch this series but as I watch more of it I am liking this series more!

      2. Yup, i find some meaningful things in this film. The plot is really fresh, and interesting so that I cannot skip any scenes like other recent TVB series.
So sad cos’ the rating isn’t higher.

      3. Agreed! I find the plot is well written and refreshing. Love this show the story is getting better and more interesting. Some may think that Uncle Man and Kaka’s relationship is awkward, but I think they are quite compatible cos they have known each other for a long time. He is a man can be trusted. Love is just love, it can never be explained. Age is just a number in the face of love and passion. Love is between two people, As long as they are happy and truly love each other.

      4. The story about the prisoners seem petty. So that’s what the wardens are concerned with? Chickens and pork chops? I find the HK justice system as portrayed by TVB is heartless. The family drama though is ok.

    3. If I not mistaken , this the first time seening Funn Lim praising Kate !!

    4. I think Kate is doing a good job in TIAD. Her emotional scenes are on point, not overacted or too stiff. Her chemistry with Lawrence is quite good as well.

  10. I don’t think this is the best performance of her career, but it is a good enough performance. I agree with a poster above that says her interpretation of the character is almost schizophrenic in a way – acting young and sweet with Man Sir and then as a Corrections Officer, she’s all proper and businesslike – there’s almost next to no reconciliation between KaKa the girlfriend and Kaka the Corrections Officer. I see an improvement in her emotional scenes, however, she did very well in episode 13 and 14.

I must be one of the very few that does not feel icked out by the Man Sir/KaKa relationship. Yes, there are issues with it (particularly Man Sir’s part) but overall I find it acceptable. At least more acceptable than a Korean series I saw many years ago – An Autumn’s Tale? Now that was disturbing – the male lead declared himself in love with the female when he found out they’re not blood related, when they grew up as blood siblings and never suspected otherwise! At least with KaKa and Man Sir, it’s always very clear but that they have no relations whatsoever.

Off topic re: Lawrence – dude, what happened? I thought he looked really good as Dr.Lok in On Call 2 and M-Club but he really look haggard in this series, especially when he was out of uniform. Performance wise, solid as ever. I’ve always liked Lawrence as an actor and the way he talks is very soothing and articulate.

    1. “At least with KaKa and Man Sir, it’s always very clear but that they have no relations whatsoever.”

That’s not accurate. Yes they have no blood relationship but do remember, he changed her diaper. That was how close they were. Uncle Man is not called Uncle Man for no reason. It is icky because he raised her. And whenever she was asking when he fell for her and she was crying how good he was to her, well, that’s icky because he has always been good to her. So it means the only reason to stop them falling for one another is if they’re blood related. That’s the only reason. Take that reason away, what then of the 20 years he raised her, too her to school, was practically for all intents and purposes her father? That’s why it isn’t right. It would have been acceptable if he had left when she was 13 or so and return when she is all grown up when he wasn’t there all the time. That is acceptable. So I find her uncle wanting to punch him was for once an accurate depiction.

      1. Each to her own, I guess. The fact that they have NO blood relations and are always well aware of the fact that they have NO blood relations, in the end, makes it okay for me. Like I said, I think there are issues on Man Sir’s part definitely…but the character also did say that he only started looking at her differently 1-2 years ago.

      2. It is icky becos though they’re not father and daughter, he was like a surrogate dad and changed her diapers (for gawd’s sakes, sounds so icky even as i type this). It’s almost incestuous. How did you people feel when Woody Allen fell for his adopted daughter and i bet he didn’t even change her diapers?

  11. Thou this might be Kate’s best performance, I find her annoying. It might be hard for her name to become a household name. Hence, seriously, her one and only look dead stare!! It’s the same dead stare be it happy, sad or tragic!! Chemistry, there is none.. sorry to say!! Lawrence has had better chemistry with others such as Ada Choi, Flora Chan and Gigi Lai…it might be an dead end topic but, chemistry amongst two characters has to be memorable… these partners are timeless !! I think even Tracy Chu in ON Call 36 2 had better chemistry with Lawrence the Kate!! I think TVB has to do a better job casting when they have such hard roles in dramas like this. I think if they pick acceptable actors to the audience, the character in hard flavor dramas (male older by 18 years) would be more acceptable to your normal household.

  12. I think Kate’s acting is ok in this drama, especially when she was remembering the sexual assualt, but overall I still don’t particularly like her acting. Maybe her character is just annoying to me.

And I also find the love story between Kaka and Uncle Man quite disturbing. It’s not the age difference, but the fact that he’s watched her grow up since he was an adult and was changing her diapers. Like other people said it would be better if he had not seen her for a large part of her childhood. I can understand why Kaka would fall in love with him, but Uncle Man falling in love with someone who is essentially his niece seems wrong to me. Plus, when Kaka found out that he had bought her 300 No Fear bears, she said “You are much nicer to me than just an uncle to his niece.” But didn’t he buy those bears for her when she was 7 or 8??

    1. oh boy! I’m disgusted about this Lawrence-Kate relationship just reading about it. It sounds so wrong. He was changing her diapers and now he wants to bed her? How gross and sick is that!?

  13. her wig makes me sick. It’s even worse with the uniform hat on her wig.

  14. Compare Kate and Josie, you’ll see the difference of what good acting is. Kate is not convincing at all.

  15. Kate is doing good
people are just bitter because haters have to hate

    1. People are not hating on Kate. They’re simply stating how they feel about her. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, nothing wrong with that.

      1. That’s what I say bitter haters are entitled to their opinion lol. Now this is no more the eyelashes but they try to pick the slighest detail about her CHARACTER just to bash her. So what if her character can be outgoing and cute when she is offwork ? Whatever *rolleyes*

    2. Haters!!!!!!!!!!I’m not saying you can’t salt ate your opinion but you aren’t stating it in a respectful way):
It’s like talking about people behind their backs which isn’t nice!I agree with Pretty.Haters HAVE to hate don’t they !?

      1. It’s human nature to talk behind people’s back. We all do it.

    3. Can’t people comment without being labeled as haters? Jeez.

  16. Even though the relationship between her and LAwrence’s character may be a bit disturbing since he watched her grow up and all but I think this series is trying to explore the reality of some of those relationships. Relationships like Kate and Lawrence though are not exactly common but it’s not rare either.
I haven’t watched that far in to the drama so can’t really comment on how she’s doing but so far from what I’ve seen it’s alright.

  17. I think Kate and Lawrence look good together. They brings me a warm feeling and I feel they have mutual understanding despite their differences
off topic, I love Kaka and Q, the way they communicate are really funny to watch, quite entertaining

  18. What I find interesting about this series is that it asks the question: “Should an Uncle and a niece be in a love relationship?”. At first glance it probably looks makes Uncle Man seem like a paedophile and completely wrong, and I somewhat feel it is a bit odd. Even though both of them are not related whatsoever, Uncle Man is 18 years older and he was literally the babysitter for Kate when she was young, even changing diaper for her. I guess it is about timing and whether couples themselves are sure of what they are doing. This is just like the case of my grandmother and grandfather who have a 10 years difference and knew each other since they were young. But both developed their love relationship when both were mature and grown up, so age shouldn’t be a barrier for love.

    1. err, did your grandfather change your grandmother’s diaper? 10 yrs isn’t the same as 18 yrs. Knowing each other since young is different from this Lawrence-Kate case. If they’d left out that changing diaper part, it might not have been that icky. Only dads are entitled to change their daughter’s diapers. To allow another male to do so is just …..icky.

    2. for me the age is not the problem. For me it is the idea of Uncle Man being in her life as a constant presence of a respected Uncle who raised her and her in his life as a ward, a niece where he plays his fatherly duties. It could be 20 years difference, 10 years difference, it doesn’t matter. It is the relationship. I cringed when she asked when he started falling for her or when she cried saying he treats her so well. This could be easily solved by both of them having intervening years separated where he didn’t play such an important role in her growth from a child to adulthood. She could easily be infatuated with him like a pupil to her teacher or a ward to her nanny or guardian but for him to have romantic feelings which will translate to sexual feelings, it is not peadophile and they can marry but don’t hate people for looking at them like “WHAT THE.. EWWWWW”. As for your grandpa and grandma, they were childhood sweethearts perhaps/. For uncle man, he held her as a baby, he fed her, he changed her diapers, he bathed her, he was for all intents and purposes her surrogate father. That’s why I say the only thing that would have stopped them having a romantic sexual relationship is that they’re blood related and since they’re not they could but doesn’t mean it is right, not on Uncle Man’s part. He is the adult. He should control himself. Unless of course the entire family give them their blessing, if not they could be alienated and can’t go wondering where did we go wrong. Well why not start with the fact when Kaka was born, you were there as the trusted uncle. I do not feel for their relationship, I do not even think it is romantic. I just think the writer screwed up and gave us this forbidden relationship that at the end will have a happy ending but did not do it elegantly and did not do it convincingly and innocently.

      1. in episode 14,in the conversation of Kaka’s mother and Man, her mother said that she thought Kaka would follow her and enter the fashion field after graduation but Kaka suddenly came back to Hong Kong. So I think kaka went to a foreign university – means Kaka and Man were separated for a few years (of course they could visit each other), maybe this was the time needed for their relation to change. well I watch this drama with english sub, so if I misunderstand anything, please forgive me

      2. Foreign university usually 3 years. If she returned early, less than that.

  19. “Tomorrow is Another Day” must be Kate’s best performance in recent years. Her performance was amazing and outstanding. It was so touching how Kaka recounted her sad childhood. I was move to tears and feel Kaka’s pain when Uncle Man rejected her love. That scene was so heartwrenching. Another heartbroken scene was when Kaka drank a lot of alcohol. I thought that Kate & Lawrence’s are pretty cute and adorable despite their first collaboration.

  20. Kate is decent when she’s an officer and her crying is ok too, but is not ok when she suddenly transforms or tried too hard to transform into a bubbly 20 something girl. Herghhhh.

The two things that bothered me about the two fadans TVB is promoting to win the award this year: trying too hard.

  21. Lawrence and Kate are ok during platonic relationship, but has no chemistry as lovers.

  22. I think the best actress award shd go to Charmaine Shek as she was real good in Line Walker. Hand’s down! Next on line shd be Kate Tsui for this current drama. She’s good and is a very versatile actress. Much as I like Linda Chung, but I think her role in All That’s Bitter is Sweet was not up to expectations, pretty lame performance. If she ever wins the BA award ts year, then it is TVB favourtism towards an artiste who signed on, esp groomed to be a singer. That will be sad cos Charmaine really deserves it, if not (since she’s no longer a TVB managed artiste), at least
Kate Tsui does more than Linda. Last year Krista Tin really deserved the BA. That was fair. Hope this year will also be fair too.

    1. This is the type of attitude everyone should have. Not favoring their fave artists, but voting according to acting skills. If only everyone can be like you, then results will be fair.

    2. AN, fully agreed with you Charmaine Sheh deserved to get the award which she got it in Singapore , her acting was awesome, her facial expression etc, Kate & Linda is far from catching up with her !!!

  23. Unfortunately this series is going downhill. And latest episode perfectly explains why Kaka is so immature and Uncle Man should have stuck to being Uncle instead of BB.

  24. Kate for tvb queen! She really did a great job. Look at all her roles., she can be sweet, drug queen, cop, emotional, etc. she has been given many tough roles. She did a great job in high n low and his one-tomorrow another day! In this drama, she is a emotional disturb girl that tries to hide it by being bubbly but eventually it’s all too much to handle….

    Great job Kate!!

  25. Kate’s article about BA was posted around the same time as Raymond’s article about BA, but Kate’s has more comments. Clearly shows less people care about Raymond now. Not interested in him anymore. I always loved Kate! She does really well in every drama no matter what role it is. Now people are finally acknowledging her. Hope she continues to improve in acting and gets more opportunities.

  26. I think lately AOD sucks , two series ,Come on Cousin & Tomorrow’s another day is not a good one , Kate ‘s acting skills deteriorated and she looks awful in her wig !!! And currently so much advertisement in between the show !!! Feel disappointing

    1. I don’t think it was a wig. She did cut her hair short. It would be hard to wear a wig when playing cop role since you have to do action scenes.

      1. It’s a wig unless she has some magic potion or spell that gives growth spurts of several inches to her hair in a matter of months. She appeared at the starhub event with her trademark long mane.

  27. No way can Kate win tvb best actress. She is too far off. I do feel the love and effort from Man sir to make the relationship work. He married a ***** of a woman earlier.

  28. I cried 4 episodes in a row…. So touching! Well done Kate!

    1. Me too, I cried with Kaka everytime she cried in recent episodes. Kate is really good with emotional scenes

  29. i agree!! well done Kate!! as for those of you that ask why Kate is such a baby. Well, the role requires her to acted such way. As you can see, in the last few episodes, you can tell that she is no longer the bubbly girl anymore. That bubbly girl always had something to hide inside. That was the reason she was acting like an immature little girl for a 20 something year old. If you all had something to say about that- it must mean one thing- that she acted very well..Great job Kate!! BA fore Kate!!!

    1. That’exactly the thing I have been trying to say all along,Kaka acts cute and so immature because she want everyone to notice her and to hide her pain inside. I think Kate is doing a really good job of portraying Kaka

      1. she did well in this drama..better than as Chan Ka Pik in High and Low

      2. Agree, she did a better job with Kaka than Ah Pat. She really improved acting skill

  30. Agree! I really like the scene when she forgave the inmate. Kate did an excellent job cause I really can connect to her character in this drama:)

  31. She did a great job! BA for Kate. Look at how she protray her role in TOD. She change from a happy bubbly immature women with emotional turmoil to a mature forgiving women! great job Kate!!! You can act in any role!

  32. “Tomorrow is Another Day” must be the best and meaningful drama for this year. Everyday is a new day and a new start in life. What is over is over, and yesterday is a day gone by and ended. Love this show! TV Queen for Kate, great performance!
