“Legend of Zhen Huan” Movie Script is Finished

A film adaptation of the highly successful Chinese television serial, Legend of Zhen Huan <后宫·甄嬛传>, may hit the big screens soon.

On March 2, Legend of Zhen Huan director, Zheng Xiaolong (郑晓龙), revealed that script for the serial’s movie adaptation is already completed. To ensure a faithful book-to-movie adaptation, award-winning director announced that Liu Lanzi (流潋紫), author of the Legend of Zhen Huan novel and writer for the Legend of Zhen Huan television drama, has helmed the movie’s script.

Zheng assured that he will try his best to gather the original cast to star in the movie adaptation if he is hired to be its director.

After airing to record-breaking ratings in mainland China, Legend of Zhen Huan also received impressive viewership ratings in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Aside from considering a big-screen adaptation, the serial’s production company – Beijing TV Art Center – is also in negotiations to bring the serial over to South Korea, Japan, and the United States.

Legend of Zhen Huan will be broken into a series of six mini-films for its American broadcast. Director Zheng said, “Several million US dollars are invested into this project. It is quite a hassle. Not only do we have to re-shoot some scenes, we also need to re-do some of its background music.

Inundated with the success of the serial, Betty Sun (孙俪), who starred as Zhen Huan, once said that she did not want to watch another episode of Legend of Zhen Huan anymore. However, Betty expressed that she is interested in working on a Zhen Huan movie if it is to be made. She stated through her manager, “As long as Zheng Xiaolong is returning to direct the movie, [I] will be willing to portray the role of Zhen Huan once more.”

    1. She is actually rather pretty. And she is an amazing actress.

    2. Your hatred of china tends to cloud and impair your judgement toward each and every mainlander. It’s so obvious.

  1. I really agree tht the emperor role shud be given to someone else.

  2. No offense, but these mainland films should not sell out their work to be butchered up, cause through editing and reshooting, you’re basically forgoing your own creative work to cater to ppl that wants to see something entirely different, what is the point of that? They’ll regret it soon enough when they see the byproduct and mis-edited work that is going to garner ridicule that will stem after it airs.

    1. How true. Many Chinese think it’s prestigious to gain attention of the American market. I’m betting this will end up as a mockery of Chinese culture with farcical English dialogue.

  3. Should the emperor be that old in history? I only watched 2 episodes. He was too old (to me) for Zhen Huan. Zhen Huan was quite young in the drama series.

    1. Yes he should be that old. According to history he was around his 40s or 50s when he became the Emperor…

    2. He was in his 40s so technically he looked the part. Zhen Huan would have been 16 or so when she entered palace. The actress looked too old for her role.
