“Loved in the Purple” Synopsis

Michelle Ye (葉璇) and Raymond Lam’s (林峯), much-awaited drama, Loved in the Purple <紫钗奇缘>, will broadcast on September 4 on TVB Jade. Loved in the Purple marks the return of the beloved duo since a decade ago in Lofty Waters Verdant Bow <雲海玉弓緣>. Many fans are rejoicing in anticipation as they eagerly wait for Michelle and Raymond’s onscreen chemistry.

Plot Synopsis

The story stems from the classic play The Purple Hairpin <紫釵記> and takes place in the Tang dynasty where Nalan Dong (Raymond Lam) is forced to abandon his title of a royal prince. Nalan Dong then takes on the name of “yellow-clothed hero” as he was the residential hero who offered help to the commoners. Nalan Dong encounters Li Yi (Cheng Cheng 程誠) and quickly become good friends, accompanying each other as they head to Chang’an.

While in Chang’an, Nalan Dong meets the beautiful dancer, Huo Xiao Lu (Michelle Ye) and is instantly mesmerized by her. He sees her wearing the purple jade hairpin and recognizes that she is the woman that was initially betrothed to him. Nalan Dong attempts to confirm his speculations but unfortunately faces many problems on his journey.

On the night of the lantern festival, Xiao Lu accidentally drops her hairpin and when Li Yi gives it back to her, she believes that he is her true knight in shining armor. As the pair falls in love at first sight, Nalan Dong is left in the dust and heartbreakingly gives his blessings.

On the other hand, the emperor, knowing that the eldest son is selfish and evil, searches for Nalan Dong in hopes that he will help him guard the kingdom. And when the empire gives Nalan Dong the duty of spying on the Turks, Xiao Lu goes in his place instead. Soon, the enemy kidnaps Xiao Lu and it is up to Nalan Dong to save her. However, before Nalan Dong can reach her, the daughter of an imperial general, Lu Jing Lan (Tammy Chen 陳怡蓉), steps in and rescues Xiao Lu.

As sworn sisters, Xiao Lu realizes that Jing Lan is in love with Nalan Dong, therefore she acts as a matchmaker between the pair. Nalan Dong rejects the marriage offer immediately as he is still in love with Xiao Lu, unbeknownst to her.

The prince falls in love with Xiao Lu’s beauty and immediately asks for her to become one of his wives. Upon rejection, the prince is angered at Nalan Dong for taking her away; therefore, he works together with Jing Lan’s father to frame the Nalan Dong. Eventually, after a misunderstanding created by Jing Lan’s father, she is forced to marry Li Yi despite lack of mutual love.

The emperor falls ill and as the prince rises in power, he orders a death sentence for Xiao Lu. The kind-hearted Jing Lan finds evidence to prove Xiao Lu’s status as a real princess and narrowly escapes being killed. After many unsuccessful attempts of killing the couple, Xiao Lu and Li Yi eventually end up together, and Nalan Dong gives a final blessing as he retires and leaves the city.

Reminds me so much of Eternal Happiness back again!! and that drama had made me fallen in love with Michelle and Raymond. Now there’s this drama! OMG!! I’m so excited!! Brings back so much memories!!

    1. Eternal Happiness’ success was unexpected. When I first watched the series, a couple years after it aired, I finally realize why people loved the two of them together!

It was such a great series. Joe Ma, Tavia Yeung and Myolie Wu were all in the series too!!!!

      1. Eternal Happiness was a decent series but a really really bad adaption of the actual novel. They just took the names and changed everything. I was disappointed in that aspect.

  2. omg i have been waiting for this for so long. hopefully it is good

      1. How do you know that it will not be that good? it is true that we should not have such high expectations since we would usually get disappointed.

  3. Counting the days to the airing of LF’s new series. LF said he has not cried so much before as in this character. It breaks my heart when I see LF sheds a tear! ❤ LF Love FUNG!

  4. LOVE it…wonder if TVB will be air it in USA…anyway…hope all the LF fans enjoy it and LF will be more popular in China 🙂

  5. Wait…Raymond and Michelle don’t end up together? Nooo

  6. She’s wearing green…thought it was Loved In The Purple…not Loved In The Green 😀

  7. Since it’ll be aired on tvb jade, will Raymond and Michelle be doing their own cantonese dubbing?

  8. i’ve watched it on qire123.com, must say it was a disappointment. the beginning was quite good but around episode 20 i’ve lost interest. but i kept watching cause i really love raymond and michelle. but at the end i just want to throw my pillow at my laptop cause they didnt end together.

    story : 3 out 5
acting: michelle 4/5 michelle is just a great actrice raymond : 3/5 cause he keeps having the same (worried and sad) expression most of the time
tammy chen : 4/ 5 did a great job. shes in love with ray but cant just be mean to michelle cause their sisters. love her acting. the rest of the cast was mediocore

i just keep wondering why does the male lead of michelles two dramas have the same name Nalan dong. does she loves that name?
    tammy chen:

    1. must say that there was only about 5 a 6 eps that have actual romances about ray and mi. the first twenty is just michelle suffering because of li yi and ray because of mi. i was happy when there was finnaly something going on in ep 23 and they got married in 26. but it turns out that they can be siblings so ray starts to ignore mi. so we’re back with the suffering

    2. I thought that it has not even aired yet??Why are they allowing people to watch it online already?

      1. It has already aired in Mainland China. It is airing on TVB, probably as a Cantonese-dubbed drama.

      2. It has?? Thanks for the info!! I thought that it will not be aired until Sept 4? I guess the info in this article is not accurate then. Do you know if it was dubbed in Mandarin? Did they use their real voices?? I hope so..

      3. Yeah, it is a mainland China drama. As for dubbing, I haven’t watched it- so I’m unsure of the voice dubbing thing. It has released in Mandarin. As for Cantonese version, it is airing on Sept 4. It has already released the main and ending theme songs and the Canto version of the main theme song!!

      4. I know it is a Mainland series. What I meant when I asked about dubbing in Mandarin is are their real voices used in Mandarin because if you watch mainland series, even the mainland artists are dubbed. I wish that they would use their real voices instead.

      5. I don’t know about that. And most of the mainland Chinese dramas I watch are dubbed with their actual voices.

      6. The Mainland version is not dubbed with their real voices, but the TVB version is.

      7. Many of the mainland series that I watch are all dubbed with others’ voices, but a few do use some of their real voices. One thing that I like about Taiwanese series is that they always use their real voices, unless they have a cast member from Korea or something then they would dubb.

Thanks for the info DC! I am a bit disappointed that the mainland version will not use their real voices…. I thought it would since I heard that all of the series that Michelle produced would but I guess not.

    3. I am not surprised that Tammy did a great job because she is a really good actress that can act in a variety of roles. A very versatile actress.

    4. I disagree on Raymond Lam and Michelle Ye. Raymond Lam has perfect acting and expression. Michelle Ye on the other hand is annoying and over the top with teenager expression. She is good when she cries. I give Raymond Lam 5/5 and Michelle 2/5. I agree on Chen Yi Rong. Overall score is 4/5 with one minus for Michelle Ye.

      1. @Ling,
Acting is subjective so you may think Raymond is great because you are a big fan of his. However, there are many others who may not think so. I have seen Michelle act in many series and really enjoy her acting. I have not seen this series yet so can’t comment. Glad that at least we agree for Tammy Chen Yi Rong. I have seen her in many series and in a variety of roles so she is a good actress in my opinion. Raymond’s acting is average to me depending on the role. But of course that is my opinion.

      2. Michelle Ye doesn’t suit the character she is. She makes an annoying teenager role. I used to like her in serious characters such as Central Affair. She just can’t be 18.5 years old.
I was never Raymond Lam fan until this series. You have to watch before you can comment anything. He didn’t shine to me in any characters I’ve watched him before but in this series, he is the hero. He saved an average series.

      3. That is just your opinion so stop trying to state it like it is a fact. You are not the only one that has seen this series. It is true that I have seen it yet but I don’t doubt Michelle’s acting since I have seen her in many other series before. I do not necessarily have to see this series before I comment. There you go again, saying that Raymond saved a series that was average just because he was in it… Sorry but to me, IF a series does not have a good plot, script and many other factors, even the best actor in the world cannot save it.

      4. I didn’t doubt Michelle Ye’s acting yet I don’t make it a fact. Michelle Ye is good when she cries not the teenager expressions. She doesn’t suit the teenager character and her character is meant to be annoying. Since you haven’t watched this series, you have no clue for the characters and their performance. I have never had impressions with Raymond Lam’s acting until this series. The plot is average, confusing and bad ending. There are only two well-written and well performed characters of Raymond Lam and Chen Yi Rong. However Chen Yi Rong doesn’t appear enough. It’s a Mary Sue character to Michelle Ye yet Chen Yi Rong lacks the time to act.
I have no clue why you have to force me to think Raymond Lam can’t be a hero to this series. Do you hate him or something? I think you are an over the top fan of Michelle Ye.

  9. I give the series 4/5 stars all because of Raymond Lam. He did a great job! Everything is perfect in his acting and appearance. I was never his fan until Loved In The Purple. I mostly burned my laptop when the ending was aired. I hate Michelle Ye in this series. She is annoying, useless, childish and selfish. Chen Yi Rong deserves the love of a great man like Raymond Lam than Michelle Ye. Everything Michelle Ye does was ran between two men. Her mother is crazy for not telling the truth.
Don’t believe the synopsis because everything is wrong. Raymond Lam doesn’t fall for Michelle Ye in the first sight. Michelle Ye falls for Raymond Lam crazily while she has the commitment with the other man. That man is a calculative little man. Raymond Lam on the other hand is a genuine hero. Michelle Ye was blind to think he is more handsome than Raymond Lam.

    1. @Ling,
Sorry but there is more to a series than just the cast. Just because Raymond is in this series or any series does not make it good. There are plenty of series with a good cast or a cast that you like but it does not automatically mean a series is good. You seem to be a big fan of Raymond and just like this series just because he is in it.

      1. I don’t watch the series for the cast and I was never Raymond Lam fan before. However after that series I become his fan because of his awesome acting and character. The series will be bad if he isn’t a part, so does Chen Yi Rong. Michelle Ye and the other actor are disaster. Their characters are annoying. I’ve read that you haven’t watched the series, consequently I don’t think you can understand.

    2. I also wanted to add that when an actress plays a role, does not mean that they are physically attractive or suitable for that role. I have seen many just average actresses play roles of beautiful women. It is the character that is handsome/pretty/beautiful, not necessarily the actor/actress. Plus, beauty is in the eye of the beholder as well.

      1. I’ve read that you haven’t watched the series, consequently I don’t think you can understand. The other male character is annoying and petty. Michelle Ye in that series says he is the most handsome man of the world. You have to watch the series to know. I don’t say the actor, I say the character can’t compare with Raymond Lam.

      2. I don’t need to watch this series to see what you are saying. Just re read your comments and you are making it seem like this series is good just because of Raymond and Tammy’s acting which is why I told you that there is more to a series than just the cast. I have seen Raymond and Tammy act in many other series before so it’s not like I have not seen them act before. You have to understand that a series is good due to many other factors and not just the cast or a few members of the cast.

      3. There is one suitable role for an artiste to shine. Kristen Stewart needs Twilight to be superstar. People doesn’t have a clue she acted in many movies with better acting than Bella Swan. However only Bella Swan wrote her name in the stardom.
This series is only good for Raymond Lam and Chen Yi Rong’s characters. Their acting suits their characters. They didn’t have over the top acting as Michelle Ye. The other actor is wooden. Michelle Ye and the other actor have annoying characters. The plot is average and confusing. The ending is illogical. Michelle Ye loves Raymond Lam crazily but she sweetly smiles when the other actor hold her hand in the end, why? She doesn’t love the other actor anymore. When Raymond Lam divorces her, she almost suicides. In a sudden she returns to the other actor, it’s illogical.
However you haven’t watched the series, you doesn’t have fair judgements. You are having prejudice because of the characters you have watched. I can see you are a diehard fan of Michelle Ye yet you hate Raymond Lam consequently you can’t bear my comments. I’m sorry I made you hurt. I don’t mean that to you. I don’t think Michelle Ye is a bad actress but she doesn’t suit the character with teenager expressions. When I watch a series, I don’t pay attention in their previous performance yet I can’t agree with you that an artiste did well in the past will do well in the future.

  10. What? Raymond loves Michelle and Michelle loves Cheng Cheng but she dosent actually marry him she is forced to but she ends up with Cheng Cheng anyway with Raymonds blessings?! Is it just me who finds it all bizarre and confusing?

    1. I only watched 2 episode so far…at the beginning Michelle loves Cheng Cheng…and hate Raymond so much…but she has not see Cheng Cheng yet, and she meet Raymond but she misunderstand Raymond…i am guessing…just guessing…after she know Raymond more…she is actually in love with Raymond but forced to marry Cheng Cheng…
anyway….i don’t really like this story…maybe because different culture of background…can’t fell into the character…look like those girls always want to marry a rich guys…anyway…I love Raymond…his big fans…yea…so…have to watch this drama.

  11. I cringe when I see an article about Raymond Lam. I swear there is discrimination towards his fans. Lol..

  12. Totally lost interest after reading the synopsis and comments… Now that i know the ending.

    1. Not really because the synopsis and soul called spoilers are not always right.

  13. LF said that he has never cried so much during the filming of that series. OMG! Some one refuses his love!? Why are the plots sooooo very sad? It breaks my heart to see his tears

    1. Spoiler alerts: he dun cry for being refused, actually Xiao Yu loves him so much without recognition. He cries when he has to quit her because there is misunderstanding tat they are brothers of same mom.

      1. Thanks Fox! Nonetheless, I hate to see LF cry because I feel his pain! He is such a good actor!
        LF Love FUNG ❤!!!

      2. I’m confused. So they think they are siblings, but really they aren’t and this never gets resolved?! Who gets married? Michelle and Raymond or Michelle and the other guy? Michelle is really a princess and Raymond is really a prince? Confusing!

  14. Beauty and colorful Drama; however kinda confusing… Would be even a great Drama if the actresses were to act maturely instead of bringing in the ‘childisch’ parts…
