Raymond Lam and Michelle Ye’s “Loved in the Purple” to Air on TVB Overseas Channels

Michelle Ye’s (葉璇) production studio teased fans with the releasing of some character posters and introductions for her upcoming romantic period drama, Loved in the Purple <紫釵奇緣>. The Tang Dynasty drama, a loose adaptation of the traditional Chinese opera The Purple Hairpin <紫釵記>, stars Raymond Lam (林峯), Cheng Cheng (程诚), Tammy Chen (陳怡蓉), and Michelle Ye herself.

The released photos include some never-before-seen set pictures, character posters, a synopsis of the story, character introductions, and an afterword introducing Michelle Ye, her production studio, and her other television drama works.

Loved in the Purple is the third television drama to be produced by Michelle Ye’s studio. Previous projects include The Ninth Widow <第九个寡妇> and Athena <雅典娜女神>, both of which have garnered notable popularity in mainland China.

TVB Purchases “Loved in the Purple” Overseas Broadcast Rights

After winning the crown in the 1999 Miss Chinese International Pageant, Michelle debuted as an actress in Hong Kong under TVB’s management. In 2005, at the height of her popularity and career, Michelle chose not to renew her TVB contract and left the station for a career in film. Michelle’s surprising and dramatic departure from her mother station led the media to speculate that she was not getting along with TVB management, a rumor Michelle debunked years later.

Loved in the Purple is arguably a product of Michelle’s goodwill relationship with TVB. Aside from casting popular TVB siu sang, Raymond Lam, as the male lead, Michelle also invited former TVB contracted actresses, Kingdom Yuen (苑瓊丹) and Elaine Jin (金燕玲), to star in supporting roles. Former TVB scriptwriter Ka Wai Nam (賈偉南), best known for his work in 1984’s The Duke of Mount Deer <鹿鼎記>, 1989’s Song Bird <天涯歌女>, 2009’s Beyond the Realm of Conscience <宮心計>, and others, was hired to helm Loved in the Purple’sscreenplay.

TVB has also recently purchased the exclusive overseas broadcasting rights for Loved in the Purple. The station also hired Michelle and Raymond to dub their voices in the Cantonese version.

The Purple Hairpin, originally a tale written for Kunqu, was later popularized into a Cantonese opera by playwright Tang Ti Sheng (唐滌生) in the late 1950’s. Due to Loved in the Purple’s familiar source material, as well as the drama’s fast-paced editing, grand costumes, and familiar actors, the drama has attracted the interest of many Hong Kong viewers.

  1. oohhhh i’m excited for this!!! can’t wait to watch it, especially if raymond and michelle are dubbing their own voices in cantonese! 🙂 that’s a definite plus! i hate it when the dubbed voices don’t match the quality of the series.

    1. Me too and glad that TVB bought the rights to air it. I wonder if other casts will be using their real voices or not? Will their real voices be used in the mandarin version too?? I want to hear their real voices in Mandarin too.

      1. I’m pretty sure that Kingdom’s voice in Mando trailer is dubbed, mean she’ll be dubbed Mando in the Mando version. The other 2 Cantonese speakers LF and Michelle said Mando themselves.

As for Cantonese version, LF and Michelle will have their own dub, Kingdom spoke Cantonese while filming but the others Chinese artists will be dubbed Cantonese as all of them dun speak Cantonese.

  2. I’m so excited for this! I never really watched their collaborated dramas. T_T

    1. Eternal Happiness was really good. have you tried watching that?

      1. Thanks guys! I should really get started on watching their dramas! 😀

    2. You should watch Eternal Happiness. Lofty Waters, Verdant Bow sucked as a series overall, but I LOVED Raymond and Michelle’s scenes together. You may want to carry some tissues before you watch the ending though.

      1. eternal happiness was so good .. never expected that series to rock!

      2. I cried every time watching the ending of Lofty Waters, Verdant Bow. I really hate that he loved Rain Li’s boring character more.
Michelle and Raymond were so cute together in Eternal Happiness.

      3. @pandamao – To be honest, me neither. I think ppl liked it because the cast was refreshing and the storyline was lighthearted.

@samlun100 – Me, too! I cried everytime watching the ending of LWVB and I make it to habit to watch it at least once a year. I actually don’t think he liked Rain Li’s character more. I think he actually liked Michell’s character more, but Rain Li’s character was “safer” and more “proper” so he took the easy way out. Remember how he got so upset and angry when Michelle supposedly betrayed her?

  3. Which means like Ip Man ASTRO AOD will probably baordcast it.

  4. Why would michelle need to invite those tvb actors out of goodwill? She’s so popular in china and makes good money without them. Should be the other way around, tvb needs Michelle to promote some of the not so popular actors.

    1. She was friends with them so of course it would be nice to invite your friends to film for you. What is wrong with that?

      1. Oh ignore it, Olive dun feel happy because LF has been paid quite high, just so. The word “actors” is just a cover to her hint.

It wasn’t neither way, Michelle dun promote freely for Txb nor Txb required Michelle to promote their ppl. It’s more simple: Michelle is close to these old Txb ppl (Koo Wai Nam, Kingdom left Txb) so she invited them to work in her series and she had the acceptance. Michelle said that she waited for that chance long ago and it finally came true.

      2. Who said there is anything wrong? The article made it sounds like Michelle NEEDS to be on good terms with tvb to promote her series. Which is why she hired the not so popular actors. Kingdom yeun is not popular in china.

And fox, I’m not like you. I say why I mean and I don’t give hints. When people say actors in English they can refer to those that are male or female. Maybe you can learn something new today. Just because I asked you once about how much Raymond lam makes doesn’t mean I will be jealous like a child. I don’t comment on every single article about Raymond lam and talk garbage and gives hints like you do with Kenneth ma. I don’t go around spreading garbage rumors like you do.

So funny, you tell others to ignore my comments but you need this chance to promote about your idol and talk do much garbage. More petty than your beloved txb.

      3. Btw, FYI, Kingdom is quite popular in China, out of your expectation, rite? Maybe she isn’t the most popular one, but she is definitely more popular than many Txb artists (even some award winners) there. Out of all, she already left Txb :P.

  5. So cannot wait for this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Yes! At least they’re dubbing their own voice in Cantonese unlike Ip Man. Can’t wait for thissssss 😀

  7. I guess Michelle wants to show that she’s on good terms with TVB contrary to the rumors in the past, lol

  8. I await for this series as well. However from the trailer Raymond seem a bit stiff with not much expression. He just have the same usually expression throughout. Compared with the others, ray is just using his cool and chok looks in the series.

  9. Thanks goodness they are subbing in Canto with their own voices!! RM rocks!

  10. I am searching a link to re-watch eternal happiness and Lofty Waters, Verdant Bow because they make a great on screen couple. Can someone help me out!

  11. Michelle has really succeeded post-TVB. I remember all those people saying that michelle will fall hard if she didn’t have TVB…but she’s a producer now. Amazing! I’m looking forward to this series. RM is much anticipated!

  12. Love in the Purple and Eternal Happiness would be a great double feature to see if the acting improved over almost 10 years. Interesting to see that LF’s costume looks similar to Wangpo character in EH.

  13. Raymond and Michelle had great onscreen chemistry. Always make me wonder if they might have feelings for each other. Raymond doesn’t have much onscreen chemistry with other co-stars as compared to Michelle.

    1. I think they did and maybe even dated in the past, but it did not work out so they remained good friends.

    2. Tell me about it! He had decent chemistry with Myolie in Survivor’s Law, but in my opinion, nothing compared to his chemistry with Michelle. The audience called them the young version of Jessica and Louis (also one of my favorite pairings) at that time. I think they may have had feelings for each other – Michelle specifically mentioned him in her autobio about how they worked very well together and stood by each other since they were both pretty new in the industry at that time. Whether they dated or not, that I dunno.

      1. Personally i don’t think they dated. I think they’re just really good friends. They call each other ‘brothers’ or ‘sisters’ so i think they’re more like good mates as opposed to something romantic.

      2. Rumoured that Michelle was the reason to make LF and Rain Li broke up after Lofty Water Verdant Bow.

Michelle wrote about a mysterious bf (one of three men in her life) in her book last time. According to her, he is the one who understand her the most as well as someone she really loved but they can’t last long because they understood each other too well. After a short date, they found out that they only can be best best friend but not lover. When she left Txb, he told her that they were still under the same sky. A lot of ppl guested that the mysterious guy was LF because Michelle once said that LF can understand her very well and in Txb, LF remains the best friendship with Michelle until now (showed by her weibo posts regarding him last year). So maybe he is really the mysterious guy, means they dated for a short while but then changed to buddy relationship.

When Michelle left Txb, many “old” friends in Txb treated her coldly. They acted like they didn’t know her or didn’t see her, even when she greeted them. So I kinda doubt that she wants to help Txb to promote anyone, but she wants to work with her true friends once again.

      3. Seriously, this is the type of women he needs to be going after…

      4. But are this type of women really gravitate toward him?
