Ruco Chan on His “Impossible” Relationship with Linda Chung in “All That is Bitter is Sweet

After last year’s Brother’s Keeper <巨輪>, Ruco Chan (陳展鵬) said he and Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣) have a different dynamic in All That is Bitter is Sweet <大藥坊>, which will give the audience another fresh look of their pairing. “In Brother’s Keeper, I was someone who boldly chased after love, but that’s not the case in this drama. [Ting Yat Yuen] is someone who doesn’t have a tomorrow, so he is someone who can adapt to anything. When it comes to love, he avoids it.”

In All That is Bitter is Sweet, Ruco portrays Ting Yat Yuen, a vagabond salesman who earns a living through business dealings with corrupt officials. Like Linda Chung‘s character To Kai Kei, Ting Yat Yuen is against the old regime in China and makes it his duty to help people who are struggling. Ruco said, “Many people think he is being rebellious, but in reality, they just can’t see as far as Ting Yat Yuen.”

After Kai Kei’s family’s estate was confiscated, Yat Yuen decides to help her. He supported her during Kai Kei’s most difficult times and the two establish an ambiguous relationship. Yat Yuen falls in love, but he is afraid to confess his feelings. “He has a hereditary illness so he thinks the two of them won’t have a future,” Ruco explained. “Kai Kei is also a widow.”

Ruco praised Linda, “She is very hard-working. She grew up overseas so her Chinese isn’t perfect. It was very difficult for her to memorize all the medical jargon. When filming first started, she spent a lot of effort on the script and had many outtakes. But she adaptly quickly and filming went more smoothly in the next few weeks.”

Ruco fell sick throughout the duration of the filming. He was earlier rumored to have had botox injections, but denied it and explained that his puffy face came from water retention. “I have about four to five scenes where I’m in the water. The weather was cold and I was already sick with a cold to begin with.”

During the filming of the drama, a real traditional Chinese physician was on set to act as a consultant. On seeing Ruco’s condition, the physician commented that actors do not get regular hours of sleep and therefore it takes longer for them to recover from fatigue. It took Ruco nearly a month to treat his fluid retention. “The physician taught me some acupressure techniques that could cure my headache and swollen eyes. They’re very useful for people like us, who don’t get sufficient rest.”

    Can’t wait to see it.

  2. Go Ruco, will always support youuuu!!! Love to see him and Linda pairing. From their on-stage interaction at Sunday’s promo events, can see that they’ve grown more comfortable with each other. Linda was playfully pressing the acupuncture point on his bald head and had her hand on his shoulder too. He also knelt down and gave her a leg massage! Lucky Linda! Noticed how Ruco’s always generous with his praises of her and others too, love his humble character. Love PanDa <3

    1. One of their interviews, Linda said that they were so boring, nothing to write about and Ruco stood beside holding the microphone for her and he just keep laughing. Are they really dating? I hope.

    2. Linda is also very generous with her praises of Ruco. In the article “Linda Chung Found Challenges in Filming “All That is Bitter is Sweet”, she mentioned that he is a great partner and this is not the first time she has mentioned it.
They seem to be on very good terms.
I like them both but I simply adore Ruco.

  3. Ruco’s role so far is nothing much but hope later is more interesting. All he does is just joke around and very relaxed. I tend to skip his scenes as nothing much going on. However cannot wait to watch him and Linda later on when things get more dramatic.

  4. Ooooo just noticed hes d good looking villian u know,GW mann! I like his actions for ATIBIS kinda flamboyant 🙂
