Sisley Choi Unable to Control Her Emotions While Filming “Overachievers”

Heavily promoted after winning Miss Hong Kong 2013 first-runner up, Sisley Choi (蔡思貝) starred alongside seasoned actors in Overachievers <名門暗戰>. Although she struggled as a newcomer, she saw the filming experience as a valuable opportunity to improve herself.

Despite her lack of experience, Sisley was given a fairly prominent supporting role as a Thai boxer and Edwin Siu’s (蕭正楠) love interest. Giving her first onscreen kiss to Edwin, Sisley was not nervous at all. “I trust the director. Since I’m close with Edwin, I was not nervous when I was filming. Everyone was always joking, so it was very relaxing. The funniest thing was when I went to eat Thai food before filming, I purposely avoided eating shrimp because of the smell of garlic. But Edwin jokingly said he purposely went to eat food with garlic beforehand!”

Tips From Wayne Lai

As a newcomer, Sisley was unable to time her emotions accordingly before the camera. She teared up before filming a crying scene but did not display the necessary emotions when the cameras started rolling.

Receiving encouragement from TV King Wayne Lai (黎耀祥), Sisley learned a valuable lesson from her mistake. “Wayne told me: ‘You have a long way to go; you still have to film a lot of crying scenes! You don’t have to take this one to heart!’ He also taught me not to focus on how poorly I did, but rather how I can improve and do better next time.”

Asked if she was afraid of criticism towards her performance, Sisley said, “I’m prepared for it. But it’s a good thing because I would know what I did wrong.”

    1. tvb is nuts…promoting Sisley so heavily in this heavyweight drama. can’t stand grace chan as it is. I prefer tracy chu more than these 2.

      1. i like tracy chu too. was amazed by how natural she was in her debut series. i hope tvb doesn’t forget her.

having said that, i don’t think sisley is as bad as some people think. she’s kind of stiff and her voice is a little weak but i personally find a certain charm about her and think she’s pretty.

      2. What?????? Tracy Chu over Grace and Sisley NO WAY. And Tracy Chu not that pretty at all compare to Grace and Sisley.

    2. must be some kind of connection. never understood how she won anything in miss hk. i don’t think she even gets to get into the pageant at all.

  1. Don’t know if that crying scene aired already, but as a newcomer, I think she did fine. I think I might even like her acting a bit more than Grace’s. I found her a bit more natural, but still raw. Grace likes to exaggerates her enthusiasm which can be too much for me sometimes. Her emotional scenes are also stiff as well. But aside from Eliza, I think these two are more likable than other newcomers in recent years.

    1. Forgot to mention this, but I like Sisley better with her short hair and natural makeup. Perhaps b/c she’s the athletic type and short hair suits her personality and seems so much more easygoing and down-to-earth.

I’m not liking her character much in the earlier episodes. I thought her pregnant storyline was a little weird and I really didn’t see it coming.

    2. Likewise! I find Grace’s acting pretentious. Sisley isn’t exactly gorgeous, but she’s more natural onscreen.

  2. At first, I preferrrd grace becausr the way she delievered her.speech seemed to be more natural abd better to hear. However.now, I prefer Sisley. Her emotional scenes are better than Grace’s because during Grace’s, i felt no.pity at all.

    1. Yea Grace kinda exaggerate , but she can still improve on it. Sisley acting seem more real during the emotional scenes compared to Grace.

  3. sisley looks like anita mui.her acting is not bad for a newcomer.

    1. She does look like Anita Mui when she wore the hat and make up during the them/ending song of the drama.

      1. Good to know im not the only one who thought she resembled Anita.

  4. Don’t understand why Sisley is getting a lot of hate, think she has what it takes to become a good actress. She has this X – factor to her. What she need is time and practice to improve her acting skills.

      1. I agree … I also think she has this x factor in her that can draw audience (at least for me). Her acting skills, imo it’s not as bad as what people says … in fact, I find that as a starter she did a decent job. The only problem with her is the voice control technique where she is pretty weak at.

    1. Yes it is. I think she is not bad for a newcomer. Same goes to Grace Chan. I think we have all seen even worse from others eg. Christine Kuo In HOmetropper and even Charmaine Sheh in an old police investigation series (can’t remember the title now). Who would have guessed Charmaine Sheh is now TVB big sista and highly sought after? Some will really improve overtime while some not. We shall let them gain some experiences before making remarks. If 5 years down the road they are still not improving then they really have no talent.

  5. I’m currently watching ‘Tomorrow is Another Day’. I quite like Tracy Chu. She’s a bit weak in the emotional scenes, but, overall her acting is natural.

Has TVB abandon her? All the current news are about Sisley and Grace. The same with Rebecca Zhu. No news.

    1. Tracy Chu is still promoted so not to worry. She has a good role in “Smooth Talker”. As for Rebecca, I’m not sure … it do seems that tvb has abandon her.

      1. I don’t if it’s only me but I find Tracy Chu not that pretty , but alot of yous seem to think she pretty and great actress.

    2. I believe Rebecca is 2nd lead in Officer Geomancer which is airing next, but no series after that. I think how she’s recepted in this series might determine if she will get bigger or smaller roles next.

    1. as well as oceane zhu. tracy chu is not that pretty but better than oceane, grace and Sisley.

  6. I like Sisley. She is doing a good job as a newbie. She is not very pretty but she gives out this down-to-earth or girl-next-door feeling. She has heaps of room to improve but will look forward to her next role. Hope TVB lets her grow slowly and steadily rather than push her out to first lead prematurely.

I prefer Sisley over Grace in crying scenes. Grace overdid in the recent episodes.

    1. I agree, i prefer sisley too! I think Grace over did it in the smiley happy scenes too. Too much smiling! Sisley is much more natural. Grace’s face is too long, almost witchy!

    2. Grace smiling scene was okay but the crying scene and sad scenes didn’t seem that natural or real at all.

    3. I think that is what you call onscreen charisma and giving out a good aura which is just as important as having good acting skills.

    4. i dont think grace overdid it in recent episodes, the point is that the character in the drama who she play is a person that lets easily her emotions flow to the outside world,so her reaction is natural in my opinion.if the character was a introvert type then yes she overdid it.

  7. It seems like TVB is experimenting with their newbies. Those who are well-received will be promoted like Eliza while others may be forgotten. Same for Grace and Sisley, but Grace has the upper hand.

  8. I’ve only seen the first few episodes of Overachievers so I’m not too sure how Sisley’s performance in the drama is but I give Grace’s performance two thumbs up…for the moment. She was quite natural and her acting doesn’t feel forced like Gloria Tang or Janet Chow.

  9. She’s raw, but not that cringeworthy. I can still stand both her and Grace so far.

  10. …. Because all pageant winners naturally know how to act. tvb, you cray.

  11. I like her, like her looks. Her acting is not bad for a new comer.

  12. I really don’t like Graces acting in yesterdays episode. The scene where she had the heart to heart with Hugo on the sofa. She is trying to convey emotion with her eyes and brows but over did it with the brows. I can still see smugness on her face lol
