“The Confidant 2” Currently in Pre-Production

TVB producer Marco Law (羅永賢) announced that he is currently working on the sequel to The Confidant <大太監>, a biographical-fiction television drama on the Qing Dynasty eunuch Li Lianying, portrayed by Wayne Lai (黎耀祥). Airing in November 2012, The Confidant ran for 33 episodes and achieved an average viewership rating of 31 points, becoming the second highest-rated Hong Kong TV drama of 2012. The Confidant also gave Wayne his third Best Actor award at the 2012 TVB Anniversary Awards.

According to various reports, The Confidant 2 – temporarily titled The Five Eunuchs <太監五虎> – will be set after the fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1911. The sequel will document the lives of five former imperial eunuchs and their struggles as citizens of the Republic of China. Wayne, Raymond Wong (黃浩然), Edwin Siu (蕭正楠), Power Chan (陳國邦), and Raymond Cho (曹永廉) will reprise their roles as the imperial eunuchs.

Producer Law also stated that he hopes to bring Aimee Chan (陳茵媺), who portrayed Princess Heshe in The Confidant, to star as the lead actress in the sequel.

“Aimee owes me a favor,” said producer Law. Earlier this year, Aimee turned down the opportunity to star in his wuxia drama,Cold Mountain, Hidden Dragon <寒山潛龍>, because of her pregnancy. Aimee has declined all job offers and is currently resting at home.

“To be honest, [Aimee] is one of my favorite artists,” producer Law acknowledged. “If she is willing to make a comeback, of course I will ask her to film The Confidant 2; but it will depend on her situation post-pregnancy and if she is willing to [return].”

Producer Law added that should Aimee accept the offer to shoot The Confidant 2, he will cast her in a role of a queen. He explained, “There will be a role of a queen. I really want to design a role that is based on her current position… Moses Chan (陳豪) calls her his queen, so I will make her a queen!”

Aimee expressed that though she is currently on hiatus, she has no intentions to stop work after giving birth. She said, “I do want to continue to act. I really enjoy acting.”

The Confidant 2 is slated to begin official production around late March or early April 2014. A promotional trailer of the drama for TVB’s 2014 Sales Presentation will begin filming in the coming weeks.

  1. So this will be a spinoff. I hope Aimed says yes. I liked her with Raymond in The Confidant

  2. Aimee as female lead is really weak. She should not be cast as lead, her acting really needs improvement. As well as her Cantonese

  3. As female lead, Nancy wu should be the one, since she’s better and she was also one of the lead in the confidant

  4. agree Nancy Wu should be a lead in the confidant 2, she can act and I think she way better than Aimee.

    1. Nancy wu really deserves to take the lead. Although Aimee is one of the executive’s favourites, but she really cannot act. Nancy is way better than her. TVB right now select wrong people to take the roles, they only pick them because of fame or popularity, not people who can act

    2. Yes, Nancy deserves the lead role. Come on the girl can act, much better than Aimee. Even Francis Ng praised Nancy. Beside Aimee’s stale acting, she can’t even pronounce the words properly. I really didn’t like Aimee in The Confidant.

  5. is there a petition where we can demand for Nancy to be lead actress? i’m not saying bring Aimee down from that position, but add Nancy to the same level!

    1. I support Nancy Wu to take the 1st lead role. She is overdue for lead roles, and she acts a lot better than Aimee Chan.

    1. I was thinking the exact same thing..really, a second one :/ ?? …

      1. hopefully it’s a whole different story with no connections to the first one.

    2. TVB wants to milk their cow dry since their creativity cow is now milked to the bone.

  6. Aimee will be the Queen. The drama will be set after the Qing Dynasty. Which means, the Queen will be disposed and GONE!! Sure, make her the Queen then 😀

  7. So this is NOT a sequel? But reboot? Spin off? Another series? Why not CONTINUE with the previous story?!

” The sequel will document the lives of five former imperial eunuchs and their struggles as citizens of the Republic of China”

Which means it will show them struggling to find work? Love? Children? Prejudice? But then some were still bloody rich. Some did marry. I don’t like the sound of it but at least no more of those Cixi was a nice woman sort of travesty of a storyline.

    1. I find this more of a travesty because Li Lian Ying died in 1911 just before the Qing dynasty ended. And didn’t An Dehai die too? Both in the series and in history? The others are fictional so I shall not comment.

      1. If they’re smart, they’ll leave out the big names and any historical references. It could be an interesting story if it were based on 5 nameless former eunuchs who follow different paths and eventually meet up in the same place (some prob dead or jailed since one/two of them is bound to be the villain).

If this drama turns out good, I really hope it’s Raymond’s (Cho) chance to shine.

    1. Tavia Yeung and Duong Di are the same person so what is the big deal????

  8. Will this be like a prequel then? I like Aimee but she is not right for a female lead in an ancient role. Please give Nancy a chance! She was great in TC 1!!!

    1. Since this is after the fall of Qing, it is neither prequel or sequel just the same cast almost same ere but different times. Nancy does not give the empress feel unfortunately. Maybe someone OTHER than these 2 women?

      1. Well Cixi died before the fall of the Qing so the female lead role must be someone else.

  9. Having a good news for Nancy’s fans: Nancy Wu will be a female lead in this series.

    1. Where did you get this news? I surely hope so, maybe not as in a queen’s role, but still a 1st lead actress.

    2. She is only confirmed to film the sales presentation. Confidant 2 will start filming in march. Too early to tell if she will lead.

  10. I would have liked to see a direct sequel but I find the premise of the spinoff quite promising. It’s an idea that’s never been done before. If done right, I think the story will be very intriguing. Hopefully TVB will film outside of their own republican era set.
