Andy Hui’s Comeback Performance Airs on ViuTV’s “Chill Club”

After 14 months away from the public eye, singer Andy Hui (許志安) made his comeback in the 34th episode of ViuTV’s music program Chill Club, which aired today, June 21. The episode, which also featured singers Gin Lee (李幸倪), AGA, and the boy band MIRROR, was aired in celebration of PolyGram’s 50th anniversary. Andy performed his singles “One Step, One Life” <一步一生> and “Half a Day’s Rest” <半天假>, with AGA and Gin. Both singles were released while Andy was an artiste under PolyGram’s subsidiary Go East Entertainment.

While Andy addressed his hiatus in a length interview with reporters after the episode recording, Andy did not say much during the Chill Club episode, except wishing PolyGram a happy 50th anniversary.

Chill Club MC Bondy Chiu (趙學而) praised Andy for his steadiness and confidence during the performance. Many viewers believed that Andy was most likely expressing his feelings through the lyrics of his songs.

14 months ago, Andy was caught in a huge cheating scandal with TVB actress Jacqueline Wong (黃心穎). Both artistes virtually left the entertainment industry to reflect. At a recording of Carol Cheng’s (鄭裕玲) talk show Do Did Eat <Do姐有問題> a few days ago, Andy’s wife Sammi Cheng (鄭秀文) shared her thoughts about Andy’s comeback, and expressed her support for her husband.

  1. As someone who grew up with Andy Hui songs, I’m glad he has made a comeback. I enjoy his voice but I do not absolve his cheating. I hope he’s learned to be a better man for Sammi.

The performance was solid; only wished that it was him and Gin singing the duet. AGA’s live singing is always iffy and off pitch. I don’t understand why, having debuted for 7 years, she’s still unable to sing from her diaphragm and let loose. Her jaw is always clenched when she sings; she’ll never improve if she doesn’t change her singing techniques.

    1. @hazel
you’re absolutely right about the female singers. gin is so much more better & relaxed vs the other girl. i had no idea who aga is but her singing is very tight. yes, it was due to a tight jaw.

      1. @m0m0 Gin is a very gifted, technical singer—she can basically sing anything. AGA is a talented singer-songwriter (her songs are massive in HK because they’re catchy and current), but a weak vocalist.

Both are from the same company, but a lot of people (including me) have the impression they don’t like each other. I don’t know why Universal Music always asks them to collaborate with each other on live shows when there’s obvious tension between them. AGA gives me a “chuen” vibe.

      2. @hazel AGA kinda helped launch Gin’s mainstream popularity back then with the song one plus one. I think she’s definitely upset that she was unable to hold her own Coliseum concert due to the pandemic… but imo universal puts more money for Aga’s music videos so.

      3. @bubbles23 It was a smart strategy from Universal to turn AGA’s “One” into a duet. I’d argue that Gin really elevated that song with her vocals and overshadowed AGA’s version. They did another duet a year later though I’m not sure it was their choice.

They’re both different types of singers so I’m not sure why they’re pitted against each other even within their own company. Universal loves to lump them together; they probably hate it.

To be honest, AGA wasn’t even remotely ready for the HK Coliseum. She is a pretty bad live singer and dances like a crab—no rhythm whatsoever. She’s a studio singer at best. I do enjoy her songs though.

      4. @hazel for sure Aga has her own niche doing r&b which is moving HK’s music forward instead of staying in the early 2000s (yes I’m looking at you, The Voice n tvb)
A lot of singers headlined a Coliseum concert that year, eg Joyce Cheng, JW… I’d say if it weren’t for sponsors there’s no way they would sell out their tickets.
Also surprisingly Aga seems to be more popular online like on Spotify than Gin.

  2. Andy was one of the guests at Gin Lee’s concert. I wonder how she feels having to sing once again with him….
Gin’s talent and ability is far beyond the HK music industry. Her recent covers are amazing.

  3. Glad Andy is out and about. This performance was pretty cool. After the incident, I’m sure he has learned to cherish and understand as being a husband. I do have to give Sammi props for having an unconditional love. God bless both of them.

I like all three of the artist. I do found AGA voice, like how everyone mentioned here, sounds weak and not as confident. Gin is very strong in depth and it appears that she has more control of her vocal.

  4. Good performance and lets hope all can put the past behind them and concentrate on his work rather than his private life. good on the two other artist to comment on Andy’s performance and left the personal stuff out.
