“Barrack O’Karma 2” in Brainstorming Stages, Selena Lee Interested in Returning

Selena Lee (李施嬅) has expressed interest in returning to shoot a sequel for Barrack O’Karma <今宵大廈>, but that will all depend on fate and timing.

On October 29th, the cast of TVB’s Barrack O’Karma reunited to celebrate the show’s successful broadcast run. There, they announced that the final episode of the supernatural horror series averaged 29.8 points across all broadcasting platforms. The previous episode averaged 31.1 points, reaching over 2 million live viewers in Hong Kong.

Selena, who was in Beijing to film a commercial, told the press that the popularity of the show had extended beyond Hong Kong. “Many reporters [in Beijing] asked me questions about the show. I was quite shocked. I know it also has many fans from Malaysia and even the United States. It’s quite miraculous.”

With her popularity sky rocketing, Selena has also seen an increase in money-earning opportunities. “It’s wonderful, but money is not the best thing that has come out of this,” she said. “What I enjoy more than anything else is seeing the viewers enjoying and praising the show. I’m not saying that money is not important: after all, if you can make a good steak, the side dishes will come naturally.”

Pointing out that Selena’s chances to win TV Queen this year is high, she humbly expressed that earning the acceptance from viewers is a good enough award for her. She added that she would rather have Barrack O’Karma win Best Drama, explaining, “The producer is relatively new, with not much experience. I do hope he wins so he’ll have more opportunities to get more resources to make better dramas.”

TVB has green lit a second season of Barrack O’Karma, with a filming projection date for next year. Selena, who is no longer a managed TVB artist, admitted that it would be difficult to accommodate the new season in her packed schedule. “With my new management, I am no longer the only person deciding,” she said. “However, if the sequel is to happen, I hope the producer will be able to obtain a bigger budget and an even better script. The later episodes have to be better than the first episode.”

As for what the second season will consist of, producer Yip Chun-fai (葉振輝) said, “We will continue to use the Twilight Mansion as the stage, but we’re still working on the other details.” He pointed out that the main characters in the second season will no longer be about Ah Siu (Joel Chan) or Alex (Selena Lee), saying, “Right now, we’re considering to either continue their story or start a brand new one. Maybe consider a spin-off of the original series, but set in a different universe, so we can include both Joel and Selena’s characters. However, their characters will no longer be the same.”

Producer Yip said he would like for Selena and Joel to return for the second season, but timing remains a problem. “They all have their own schedules to fulfill. It’ll be hard to get Selena back, as she’s no longer a managed artiste. But she really enjoyed working with us, so we hope we can win her back.”

The production team will be working on bringing the original cast back together, with the addition of new cast members. “The show’s format is several story arcs in one, so keeping things fresh is important.”

  1. Selena Lee is such a nice and humble actress. I do hope she has great projects in the future! I wish her all the best!

I’m a bit saddened that the producer gives the idea that Joel Chan and Selena Lee (if she comes back) have a minor presence in the sequel. I do really like both of their performances in this drama and I hope this performance carries on in the sequel. I like the characters of Alex and Ah Siu. But I’m okay if they venture to different characters but still having the same actors/actresses.
Hopefully the sequel is better than the first! As TVB have usual tendencies to ruin sequels :/

      1. @m0m0 Personally my fav series is the 學警 Series (The Academy/On the First Beat/E.U.).
But I agree, Rosy Business 2 remains to be the strongest sequel series… and that’s because they had the whole cast returning.
