Casting Confirmed for 10 Upcoming Chinese Dramas

As we settle into a new year, several major Chinese production studios have also confirmed the casting of their major television productions. Among the highly-anticipated series include Hao Yi Xing <皓衣行> starring Leo Luo (罗云熙) and Arnold Chen (陈飞宇); and Jing Shuang Cheng (镜双城) starring Yukee Chen (陈钰琪).

1. Wo Jiu Shi Zhe Ban Nu Zi (我就是这般女子), aka I Am This Type of Woman

Based on the novel of the same name, the television adaptation is confirmed to star Guan Xiaotong (关晓彤) and Neo Hou (侯明昊). The romantic comedy, which is set in ancient China, centers on a young woman who falls in love with a beautiful and talented man after being turned down three times by different suitors. The young woman also possesses the ability to see the future; the series takes a darker turn when she watches her family getting executed in a dream.

2. Yan Gui Xi Chuang Yue <雁归西窗月>

The web drama, which is based on a manhua about a young woman getting involved with a royal dispute, has already started production. It stars Joseph Zeng (曾舜晞) and Liang Jie (梁洁), both who have starred in different versions of the wuxia classic The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber <倚天屠龙记>.

3. Wo He Wo Men Zai Yi Qi <我和我们在一起> aka Be Together

The series centers on a close group of friends who grow and change together as the years go by. Sun Yi (孙怡) will play the female lead, with Vin Zhang (张彬彬) as the male lead.

4. Hui Lang Ting Sha Ren Shi Jian <回廊亭杀人事件> aka The Murder in Kairotei

An adaptation of the Japanese novel of the same name by Keigo Higashino (東野圭吾), the thrilling story begins with a woman who wakes up in a hospital and was told that her boyfriend had died in a fire. The novel was made into a television film in 2011 by Japan’s Fuji TV. The Chinese adaptation will star Deng Jiajia (邓家佳) and Steven Zhang (张新成).

 

5. Astringent Girl <澀女郎>

Adapted from the Taiwanese manhua of the same name, Astringent Girl is a comedy series that satires the relationships that women have with men. It stars Yin Tao (殷桃), Song Yi (宋轶), Angel Zhao (赵今麦), Nita Lei (夏若妍), and Hu Lianxin (胡连馨).

6. Wan Mei Xian Sheng He Cha Bu Duo Xiao Jie <完美先生和差不多小姐> aka Mister Perfect and Miss Almost

Also adapted from the novel of the same name, the romantic comedy follows the love story between two college students who are awkwardly matched. It will star Wei Zheming (魏哲鸣) and Xu Ruohan (徐若晗).

7. Bu Yun Qu <步云衢>

A Manchurian princess falls in love with a young warlord in the latter years of Republican-era China. It stars Ryan Zhang (张赫) and Rain Wang (王鹤润).

8. Liu Jin Sui Yue <流金岁月>

A major blockbuster production and easily the most anticipated one on the list, the series will be set in 1990s Shanghai, and centers on the story of two women. Originally announced to be starring Sun Li (孙俪) and Ni Ni (倪妮), Sun Li later turned down the series. According to reports, it’s highly likely that Cecilia Liu (刘诗诗) will replace her. The series is adapted from a novel; the novel was also previously adapted into the 1988 Hong Kong film Last Romance starring Maggie Cheung (張曼玉) and Cherie Chung (鍾楚紅).

9. Luo Hua Shi Jie You Feng Jun <落花时节又逢君>

The xianxia novel, which is what the series is based on, is being touted as fans as the most romantic xianxia story after Three Lives Three Worlds <三生三世十里桃花>. The series is set to star Feng Yilun (方逸伦) and Li Gengxi (李庚希).

10. Jing Shuang Cheng <镜双城> aka Mirror Twin Cities

With only Yukee Chen confirmed to star, Jing Shuang Cheng is based on a fantasy novel that tells the story of a Miao woman who ends up in an otherworldly paradise to escape the chaos of the world.
