Charmaine Sheh Stars in New Chinese Drama, “The Legend of Xiao Chuo”

After starring in Chinese drama Story of Yanxi Palace <延禧攻略>, Charmaine Sheh’s (佘詩曼) popularity surged. In addition to an increased number of appearances on television interviews, variety shows, endorsements, and promotional events, Charmaine has also taken advantage of her boost in popularity by venturing into business. Recently, the 44-year-old launched her own cosmetics brand, Sh, and also collaborated with Gourami, an active wear brand, and launched her own swimsuit line.

After taking part in a lead role in Chinese drama Winter Begonia <鬓边不是海棠红>, Charmaine recently accepted a new filming project. The 44-year-old actress will be starring in The Legend of Xiao Chuo <燕雲台>, where her character will see an even more tragic end than in Story of Yanxi Palace. The historical drama also stars Tiffany Tang (唐嫣) in the lead role of Xiao Chuo, who is a Khitan empress and military leader of imperial China’s Liao dynasty. The story explores how Xiao Chuo deals with and settles political corruption and turmoil to bring peace to her country. Shawn Dou (竇驍) portrays Han De Rong, who is the love interest of Xiao Chuo.

Charmaine stars as Xiao Chuo’s older sister, Xiao Huzhen, who is a strategic militarist with strong martial arts skills. After her husband’s passing, she becomes leader of 30,000 troops. She falls in love with a man whom Xiao Chuo deems to be of lowly status and unworthy of her big sister. To keep him away from Xiao Huzhen, Xiao Chuo sends him into exile, incurring the wrath of Xiao Huzhen. Although she eventually reunites with her lover, Xiao Huzhen feels resentful that he was punished without a reasonable cause. She decides to arch her army to retaliate against Xiao Chuo, ultimately leading to a tragic ending.
