Did Steamy TV Kiss Spark Crystal Fung’s Breakup with Doctor Boyfriend?

Crystal Fung‘s (馮盈盈) sudden announcement of her breakup on Instagram today took many by surprise. Entering the entertainment industry after winning Miss Hong Kong 2016, Crystal has publicized her relationship with her doctor boyfriend, Martin Chung (鍾文浩). This year, the couple moved in together and Crystal had even helped pay Martin’s down payment on his new condo. But living together presented its problems, and the couple decided it’s best to go separate ways.

On Instagram, Crystal wrote, “In our four years together, we have supported each other through all the ups and downs. We saw each other go through many stages of our lives. Starting today, we are no longer a couple but we will still support and wish each other the best in our future.”

Kissing Scene with Jonathan Cheung Was Too Much?

Speculations arose regarding the reason behind Crystal’s breakup. She had mentioned Martin’s jealousy over her onscreen kissing scenes with male co-stars, but as an actress, intimate scenes were sometimes inevitable.

With gossip spreading that Crystal’s steamy shower scene with Jonathan Cheung (張穎康) in The Man Who Kills Troubles <解決師> was the last straw igniting the breakup, Jonathan said, “They are just rumors, and I do not know the reason behind their breakup. In all honesty, my wife was also unhappy. These scenes are painful for our significant others. When Crystal first accepted this role, she didn’t want to film this scene. We tried to avoid less intimacy onscreen and touching each other. But in the end, we had to do the scene. I can only say artistes can be quite powerless sometimes.”

Appearing at the blessing ceremony with Jonathan for their new drama Sinister Beings <逆天奇案>, Crystal clarified the reason behind her breakup. “Rumors are circulating that one of the reasons is my kiss with Jonathan in The Man Who Kills Troubles. This is definitely not the case.”

The 25-year-old actress explained, “We had decided to split up this month. We thought about the decision carefully. Our problems started after we started living together. As the saying goes, it’s much harder to live together. It was a drastic change [in our lifestyles] after moving in together, which required time to adjust. Because of this, we both felt it’s better to go back to being friends. We’re both focusing on our careers, so we can’t deal with [the problems in our relationship] right now.”

  1. The version I saw online had no intimate scene whatsoever I don’t understand why it’s filmed and got cut? Interesting thou since she does sound like it’s a forever thing whenever she talks about her Dr. BF but hey both young anything can happen.

    1. @wm2017 honestly, i feel like these extra cringy scenes only serve the director weird perversion. It’s public TV so they can’t go too frisky. TVB ways of showing “deep romantic bonds” are usually told rather than shown anyways. It also has a forced logic, so intimate scenes aren’t really necessary.

It seems like this is the new norm for promotion effect. It’s like a decade ago, it was all couple rape scenes. Lame really, imo.

      1. @jjwong have to agree with you, i think the both of them were taken advantage of due to their “rising-star” status…thats when directors can make any request they want without being refused cause these actors/actresses don’t want to sabotage their positions by saying no.

      2. @jintianxiayue During an interview, Jonathan said him & Crystal tried to convince the directors to change their mind about the intimate scenes because they didnt want to do it

  2. I think it’s really hard for someone in the entertainment industry to be with someone who is not. It takes a lot of trust, patience and understanding to keep the relationship going. A lot of artists break up with their significant others after entering the industry and started getting recognized. An artist’s lifestyle changes as they have to work long hours, hardly has vacation time and many times, have to do intimate scenes with the opposite sex. They may now want to focus on their new career so they have less time to cultivate the relationship, resulting in 2 people eventually becoming distant. Furthermore. it is hard for someone from outside the industry to fully understand all the demands and requirements in their BF or GF’s line of work. Of course, some couples do work out but many don’t.

    1. @kokomo During an interview, Crystal said their breakup has nothing to do with her job or long hours. She started crying when talking about how understanding her bf was with her having to film intimate scenes & her being in the entertainment industry, in general. She said they broke up mainly because they moved in together and conflicts came up as a result

  3. What a shame. I actually really enjoyed the conversations and details she shared about her relationship in Young & Restless. It was refreshing.

And she sounded so sure of being Mrs. Doctor too.

I really thought they’d make it and this would be another golden couple, even though her BF isn’t in the industry. They just sound grounded with each other.

  4. I just want to add that doctor’s hours are also long, demanding and unpredictable. It’s easy when you are just dating, you make time for each other but it’s different when you are living together it’s hard to be home alone most of the time.
