Edison Chen Speaks Up About Racism Toward Chinese People

By now, COVID-19 cases have been reported worldwide, and the United States is currently leading the world with the most confirmed cases. Earlier, President Donald Trump sparked a heated discussion when he referred to the virus as a “Chinese virus.” Trump’s commentary is just one of the many instances of discrimination against Chinese people all over the world, and many people are fed up with the blatant xenophobia and racism during this time. Former entertainer Edison Chen (陳冠希) made a post referring to the issue on Instagram two days ago.

He uploaded a picture full of text that read, “COVID-19 isn’t Chinese.” He wrote, “COVID-19 is a global problem, so st*u and stop being racist. It’s 2020, y’all.”

Though Edison has been away from the public eye and settled down in the United States with Shupei Qin (秦舒培) and their daughter to focus on his fashion brands for some time now, his words and deeds are still the focus of everyone’s attention. Another thing that hasn’t changed is Edison’s hot temper, which was reflected in the post.

Still, many people supported the message, including Donnie Yen’s (甄子丹) wife, Cecilia Wang (汪詩詩). They agreed that hatred should no longer be spread, and it should be replaced with love. In fact, other artists like Fala Chen (陳法拉), Adia Chan (陳松伶), and Vanness Wu (吳建豪) all publicly called out racial discrimination. Many Internet users also frowned upon the discrimination culture around the world.

However, some netizens continued to scold Edison, as they thought his remarks were pro-Communist. One netizen wrote, “The world may not be what you think. You should at least be able to clearly distinguish the Taiwanese, Hong Kongese, and Chinese.”

  1. Covid isn’t Chinese = Pro Communist now? Huh?

Also White People don’t care if you identity as HK/TW/whatever since they don’t care and just see you as Asian.

    1. @karina
People like to neat pick and critique to feel their existence. It’s a time to stand together regardless of what your nationality is. When you are out on the street with an east Asian face, racist will pick on you not caring where u r really from.

  2. One netizen wrote, “The world may not be what you think. You should at least be able to clearly distinguish the Taiwanese, Hong Kongese, and Chinese.”

Lol, what an ignorant comment. Taiwanese and Hongers are definitely Chinese (unless it’s the real native Taiwanese people). You’re Chinese descent dumbass, it doesn’t matter where you are geographically. That doesn’t change your ancestry.

  3. How is his post pro-Communist? The last time I checked, Chinese is still an ethnicity and not a political ideology. The two are not interchangeable. If you are meaning to tell me that being Chinese automatically equates to being pro-Communist, you should get off the internet and hit the books. The lack of proper knowledge is at best sad and at worst dangerous, honestly speaking.

Edison’s made some questionable actions/remarks, but I do not see any wrongdoing with this post. If anything, this post is what we need right now. There is a rise in hate crimes toward Asian people, and we need to let everyone know that it’s unacceptable. Enough with the division and fighting over the small details. It is this kind of mentality that is holding Asians back in most Western societies. Look at the bigger picture. This is the time when we need to rally and stand up for each other, because at the end of the day do you think the bigots are going to take the time to ask if you are from Mainland China, Hong Kong or Taiwan? Let me tell you now: hell to the effing no. Every Asian has a target on their back regardless of their ethnicity or political beliefs. The sooner these delusional people who are criticizing Edison’s post figure that out, the better.

  4. All this ridiculous..
Trump is not helping.. keep on referring it to the CHINESE VIRUS…
as u have said other people do not know where u come from…they just know we are Chinese.
those that wave that flag in HK.. tell them to go and see if USA or UK will take them now…. Let them experience the racism..

  5. Yes Edison, COVID is now a global pandemic, but don’t forget where its originated!!! But enough with the finger pointing, and let’s pray this pandemic will end soon and things go back to normal.

  6. Can’t really blame them. To us, it’s the same. All “whites” are whites to us, we can’t tell whether they’re american, Canadians, Russians or European. All “blacks” are black, can’t tell whether they’re African or Jamaican or Caribbean

    1. @joyce LOL..So true. Just like one of my colleagues used to call all Asians Chinese. haha Whether or not they are Korean/Japanese or any other that looks Asian they would automatically assume they are all Chinese.

  7. I can’t believe he still not married his girlfriend yet after having a child together for other they already married before the baby even born. The daughter grew up so fast I remember she was just a baby.

  8. Then hong kong people and taiwanese should stop speaking cantonese and mandrain if they don’t wanna be mistaken as chinese.
