Eric Tsang and Louis Koo to Co-Produce New HK Comedy
Eric Tsang (曾志偉) and Louis Koo (古天樂) will co-produce an upcoming comedy film to kickstart the staggering Hong Kong film industry.
The Hong Kong film industry has been hitting a new downward slope due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Many actors haven’t had work in months, and it has been said that some even changed their careers to maintain a living.
According to sources, Eric Tsang and Louis Koo have teamed up with director Andrew Lau (劉偉強) to make a comedy film based in Hong Kong. Similar to the 1991 movie The Banquet <豪門夜宴>, the film will feature a star-studded ensemble cast. Vincent Kok (谷德昭) will direct the film.
Actors like Chilam Cheung (張智霖) and Simon Yam (任達華) have already received invitations to star in the film. Many of these actors have already agreed to do the film for free. Chilam said, “I’ve heard about this. Contribute whatever you can. Even if they gave me the role of being a background extra I wouldn’t mind.”
Simon supports the film, saying, “I received the invitation a few days ago. The film has several overlapping storylines, and I hope it can spread more positive energy to our audiences. They have my unwavering support.”
In related news, Wong Jing’s (王晶) Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber <倚天屠龍記> remake will reportedly resume filming in mainland China starting June. The film stars Raymond Lam (林峯), Janice Man (文詠珊), Sabrina Qiu (邱意濃), Donnie Yen (甄子丹), Rebecca Zhu (朱晨麗), and Louis Koo.

I miss those hk movies from the 80s, movies now aren’t as good as those. And this was movies in the 80s. 🙁
Still using the same ‘group’ of actor, hope the movie won’t end up with just bunch of dirty boob joke, fat shaming scene, sexual innuendo like most of HK comedy movies.
@sev2 if not the ‘same group’of actors then who else? All movies in HK mostly low budget. Dont even have high expectation man..
I would love to have another series of Super Maximus Trio. Such a good variety show. Sure they did I Love HK but it wasn’t as good as SMT.

The Banquet was so good! Loved that movie…it’s still one of my all time favorite HK movies ever! The number of stars that participated in that film back then (most of them for free, since it was for charity) was out of this world. I doubt that they will be able to reassemble such a stellar cast now, even with Eric Tsang and Louis Koo’s connections…but we will have to see…
If it’s an ensemble cast comedy movie, it will be nonsense sort of storyline and wont work
They need a great script like infernal affairs, a great actor if comedy like Stephen chow or an ensemble of jet li donnie yen stephen chow with great director. Other than that it will be those stupid cny movies. In short script first, then actor. I dont see any hope. They really need a good iconic movie. As for hsds adaptation wont work also because I find the actors old and wrong. In short hsds deserves a tv remake, not a movie remake.
@funnlim I agree. The Banquet was successful in part because they had the entire HK movie industry working together — from directors to scriptwriters to producers to cinematographers to actors, all the biggest names in HK entertainment at the time. They didn’t have a tremendous amount of time to put everything together, but with so many experienced people in all disciplines contributing ideas and working together, it was successful.
Currently, the HK entertainment industry is too divided for something like the above to happen…most likely it will be artists affiliated with EEG and One Cool Film only, in which case there’s no point.
