Jiro Wang Issues Statement To Say That He is Chinese

Thing are getting a bit uncomfortable for Jiro Wang (汪東城). The Taiwanese actor was hired to endorse a mobile game, but played the game so poorly during the live broadcast that fans of the game criticized him for being “unprofessional.” Bombarding social media with comments of their disappointment, the game developers eventually took to Weibo to express their regrets, and that they would consider “hiring a more seasoned player for the live stream.”

This, of course, didn’t sit well with Jiro’s fans. The game’s fans and Jiro’s fans broke out into war online, leading to some fans to bring up Jiro’s speculated support of Taiwan’s independence, using that as leverage to prove that Jiro was a poor celebrity endorser and did not deserve to be part of the game.

It has gotten to the point where Jiro himself had to come forth with a statement. On July 10th, the former Fahrenheit (飛輪海) singer stated on Weibo, “In regard to the recent video game collaboration issue: I see my lack of thorough thinking and preparedness, and I am accepting all of your criticism and advice. I want to express my sincere apologies to the parties I have hurt during this process.” He urged fans to protect Internet peace, then added, “I noticed that people online are starting to call into question my personal standpoints and opinions. My statement is this: I haven’t insisted that I am Chinese. My ancestral home is Guangdong. That has never changed, and will never change.”

Jiro’s statement was followed up by a legal statement released by his personal studio. The statement mentioned Jiro’s support of the “One China” policy.

  1. this is so unnecessary. endorsing a game doesn’t mean you need to be good at it. would be professional to try it out but doesn’t mean you have to be good. anyway, being drag into this political drama b/c of an endorsement is pointless.
