Liu Haoran, Arthur Chen Star in Chen Kaige’s “Flowers Bloom in the Ashes”

Filming has commenced for director Chen Kaige’s (陳凱歌) semi- autobiographical film Flowers Bloom in the Ashes <尘埃里开花>. Featuring popular young actors Liu Haoran (劉昊然) and Arthur Chen (陳飛宇), the movie takes place in the 1960s and will follow several youngsters’ journey to adulthood and the obstacles they face along the way.

The movie started filming in July. Photos from the filming set showed the actors’ nomad style with tousled hair. The actors’ clothes were distressed with visible holes.

Although Arthur is Chen Kaige’s son, and it is the first time he is starring in a movie directed by his father. It is also the first time Chen Kaige’s wife Chen Hong (陳紅) will be participating in his movies as well.

Although currently studying at the Central Academy of Drama, 21-year-old Liu Haoran already has several impressive hits in his resume. In 2014, he was the male lead in Chen Si Cheng’s (陳思诚) youth romance Beijing Love Story <北京愛情故事>. At the time of auditions he had never received any formal acting lessons, but he caught the eye of director Chen Si Cheng who saw his raw talent. Haoran made a deep impression in his first film, and won the Best Newcomer award at the 21st Beijing University Student Film Festival. The actor went on to star in the box-office hit Detective Chinatown <唐人街探案> film franchise, as well as Chen Kaige’s The Legend of Demon Cat <妖猫传>.
