Marvel’s “Shang-Chi” Resumes Filming with Michelle Yeoh

Marvel’s first Asian-centric superhero film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has resumed filming in Sydney, Australia.

Starring Simu Liu (劉思慕), Tony Leung Chiu Wai (梁朝偉), and Awkwafina, the film is an adaptation of the Shang-Chi comics, which centers on the titular skilled martial artist, portrayed by Simu Liu. Tony stars as the Mandarin, leader of the Ten Rings terrorist organization.

Filming for Shang-Chi commenced in early February 2020, but was postponed after one month of filming due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Shortly after entering hiatus, Marvel announced that it has casted Ronny Chieng (錢信伊) in an undisclosed role.

Five months later, Marvel announced that Shang-Chi has already re-commenced filming for all production units. Local TV stations in Australia also recorded videos of the production set, which features ancient Chinese buildings.

Marvel has also confirmed—after months of speculation—that Michelle Yeoh (楊紫瓊) has officially joined the cast. Michelle shared photos of herself in Sydney, as well as pictures of her getting tested for COVID-19.

Former TVB actress Fala Chen (陳法拉) is also part of the cast.

  1. Hopefully ShangChi doesn’t end up streaming online on Disney+ like Mulan. Lol

that’s awful if that’s true. i thought they weren’t doing it b/c they spent so much $$ making it.

    2. @anon Well, I live in The Netherlands, so still hopefull that Mulan will be in the movie theaters here bc ours are open!

      1. @anon It is confirmed for the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and some western European countries, but didn’t mention which ones, so I am still hopefull that I am able to see it on the big screen

I’m in Canada, where COVID-19 is one of the least affected countries in the West and most people I know don’t dare to go to theatres. It’s idiotic to put your health in the hands of high school kids to properly sanitize and disinfect the seats and facility. Also, many people don’t even have the deceny to wear masks (mostly non-Asians). I’ll never go to the theatre until the dust settles.

      3. @anon most people I know been going since re-opening since July 1st. Even been with my little niece and nephew a couple of times.

      4. @anon Canada is def doing a good job dealing with covid19. In regards to kids properly sanitizing, this is the same reason why I dont think schools should open anytime soon. Also, I’m from the US and there are many Asians who dont have the decency to wear masks here

      5. @luye
are those asians just trying to breath? some times if there are very few people around i just take off my mask. i put it back on when someone gets close.

      6. @m0m0 I was in a supermarket and this Asian lady was walking around with no mask on while everyone else wore. Also some people outside take their masks off to smoke even though it’s crowded street

      7. @m0m0 it is quite normal now, but ofcourse with the corona rules taken into account. You have to buy your ticket online and pick your seat. The 2 seats next to your left and right is always blocked. Also the ssats infront and behind you.

      8. @ywong888
keeping 6 feet. i hope they crank up the AC and air filters to avoid air particles flying all over the place. overall, i think keeping things open is not exactly a bad idea at least you have a choice. you can’t call out someone and judge them for who they are b/c they choose differently than you.

  2. Is Fala confirmed?? If so, great news and happy for her! Excited to see how much she’s learned from Julliard. I hope this opens up more doors for her as well. Equally thrilled to see Tony Leung in a Hollywood movie!

Still feel indifferent about Simu and Awkwafina so I really hope Marvel does their Marvel magic.

  3. Whoa Michelle and Fala, pretty cool well rounded Asian cast, with no PRC ties either haha…Looking forward to this, this I would drop the $30.00 on if I had to watch this on demand…
