Miss Hong Kong 2020 Candidates Interview Online

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Miss Hong Kong 2020 will be breaking away from its formal pageant roots and taking the form of a reality show this year. Conducting first-round video interviews of the candidates online, netizens were allowed to participate in the live question-and-answer session. However, the online video chat format did not work smoothly in some instances and resulted in misunderstandings.

The contestants were split into different groups based on their style. The women had an individual self introduction and then would answer questions as a group on a shared screen.

In the second group, an overseas contestant located in Norway, Michelle Chau‘s (周美善) interview was full of mishaps. When she first connected, her screen was stuck in landscape mode and her audio was not connected. With the guidance of host Luk Ho Ming (陸浩明) she was able to haphazardly fix both. However during the 20-second introduction she was only able to mention her name, age, and that she was born in Norway before her audio disappeared again. Working as a flight attendant, Michelle’s  Cantonese was heavily accented and interviewers asked how she was able to learn the dialect. She laughed and said that it was a good question and that she learned from dramas and from speaking with her parents.

Another contestant, Jessica Liu (廖慧儀) also worked as a flight attendant.  When the 23-year-old is not flying, she models and teaches yoga on the side. When interviewers asked if her company allowed for her to have multiple jobs, she clarified that she was actually helping friends and modelling for fun.

Netizens commented that Jessica resembles former Miss Hong Kong contestant Kelly Ng (伍樂怡), but the other contestant Michelle thought the comment was for her and thanked the audience! It made for a very awkward moment as she said, “Thank you for this compliment. Both men and women like to hear this. Thank you!”

  1. wouldn’t one think that proper internet connection is a prereq prior to an interview? what a disaster and laughing stock for tvb.

  2. I wonder how they all planned this cuz everyone is from different timezones. You have people from HK region then Europe like Norway, Hawai, Spain etc. Seems such a pickle to deal with.

it would have to be hk time given the crew and the host is in hk. they stopped doing live broadcast last year so it would be quite crazy to do live broadcast this year and given the current situation. lags between and during with remote connections are expected so this is likely not a live show anyway. i do want to watch it since it is so different from the previous ones esp how they will be doing the swim wear, performance, and crowning sessions. i guess the award will be sent via mail and what will happen to the miss friendship award?

      1. @m0m0 I know they’d have to edit stuff but I think it was live? How else would the audience ask questions then and they being answered by the contestants? So they must’ve taken consideration of timezones for each and tried finding a suitable time for each person which I truly don’t understand how this was implemented.

      2. @oligodendrocytes According to this Youtube video I watched, apparently TVB gave a person a time slot to be prepared, and that person waited for like 8 hours and in the end TVB told her that they did not have time to interview her during this live session. Idk how true this is as I got this info from this random youtube video.
