Netizens Outraged by New Chinese Drama Based on Coronavirus Pandemic

While the world continues to grapple with containing the spread of COVID-19, China’s National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA) reveals its plans to adapt the fight against the virus into a new anti-epidemic drama titled Together <在一起>. With a planned release date of October, netizens are already reacting negatively to the news and are criticizing the dramatization of the sensitive topic.

The new drama will have 20 episodes and is separated by stand-alone stories based on anecdotes of people from all walks of life. Using artistic techniques, the drama hopes to portray the solidarity and heroism of the community.

Among the many prolific screenwriters and directors that have signed on to produce the drama, screenwriter Zhang Xin (六六) has already begun researching for the drama in Wuhan. Zhang Xin hopes that by participating in the drama as a screenwriter, she would be doing her part in the fight against the virus and document the heroism of the front-line workers.

As soon as the drama details were released to the public, netizens responded with widespread criticism, “Reject the drama. If they want to film, film a documentary to warn the next generation. Hope the cast consists of real medical staff to create a more genuine and emotional retelling of the crisis.”

As the COVID-19 has been recently declared as a global pandemic, many netizens criticize the timing of the new drama, “After COVID-19 is over, I will support this. Now I just feel sick by this.”

  1. china takes every opportunity to make itself look good. what a terrible time to start talking about drama/movies about the virus while rest of the world is dealing w/ it. such an HR failure.

    1. @m0m0 propaganda at its best lol. How to calm the anger of your citizens? By making a drama showing doctors and nurses are trying their best to combat the illness, and to forget where the virus came from, the actions of the government, etc

Likely showing the road victory in suppressing the virus and no sign of how the virus originated and how the information was withheld from the public….

honestly what else do you expect from the communist party. sad thing is, they said they’re banning wild animals, people will still continue to eat it in secret/bribery. instead of focusing on promoting the dangers of wild life, they will most like chose to promote how the party fought the disease. nothing wrong w/ promoting hope and bringing light to this dim situation, but too much too soon and bold.

      3. @m0m0
They are deluded and believe these wild animals are delicacies and great for health. Even if there was a ban, the rich and powerful will still secretly sneak these meals in with huge glee as they munch….

      4. @hetieshou because apart from the genetics sequence, you don’t have other details as china wont let other investigate it! However, it’s basically the same virus as SARS, n they know it’s originate from bat. Have you seen contagion? It’s pretty much us lol. N it shows in chaos, the world races for a vaccine and containment instead of trying to find out what happen

  2. A news article written by an HK news media outlet about the Chinese government. I am sure it will be impartial and just.

More truthful than the west. At least the Chinese media doesn’t distort facts and presents news as is. The west bends and distorts news stories to suit their narrative. Agree to disagree.

      2. @anon China is the one that eject all foreigner reporters. If you think they are truer than the west, then good for you. To me, they are all the same

  3. The idea of a series based on the coronavirus is not a bad idea but the timing is very bad. They should do it after this is long over not while people are still struggling with it.

    1. @hetieshou Exactly, its not even like its gone in China (nevermind that it spread from China in the first place and is nothing to feel proud about) A completely tone deaf move.
