Ngo Ka Nin Recounts Career at TVB

Last month, TVB artistes Ngo Ka Nin (敖嘉年) announced his decision to leave the station after 22 years of working there. As Ka Nin recalls his time with the station, he shares the memories and lessons that he learned throughout his career.

When Ka Nin filmed his drama, Gods of Honour <封神榜>, Ka Nin confessed that he was very inexperienced and didn’t know how to read the script. Remembering the past, Ka Nin said, “I opened the script. It had so many words! There were triangles written to describe the emotions, so I asked the directors if I needed to read the triangles. Everyone laughed at me.”

Ka Nin played many extra roles before the audiences started noticing him and shortly after, producer Lee Tim Sing (李添勝) tapped Ka Nin to join the cast of Sweetness in the Salt <碧血鹽梟>. Lee Tim Sing saw potential in Ka Nin and gave the actor the liberty to build his character as a haughty second rich generation. Following that, Ka Nin gained recognition for his role in Rosy Business <巾幗梟雄> and No Regrets <巾幗梟雄之義海豪情>.

Just as Ngo Ka Nin gained traction in his career, he unfortunately got involved in an altercation with his martials art teacher Sin Ho Ying (冼灝英) for switching teachers. Ka Nin remembered being engulfed in negative press and shared, “During that time, I thought I would be okay, but slowly I saw it affecting my career. Even the people in the company started seeing me in a different way.” Following the incident, Ka Nin understood how he did not handle the matter well and learned to reflect on his actions.

As an artiste for many years, Ngo Ka Nin admitted that it was bittersweet and he had his share of unhappy memories. Once while Ngo Ka Nin was filming a sad scene, someone deliberately tried to affect his mood, “I had previously experienced so much pressure from filming that every night I would go home, took a shower and still wanted to cry. I wanted to let the emotion out so I can sleep. It was exhausting.”

  1. it’s such a pity. he’s a descent actor and deserved much more opportunities than what tvb gave him.

  2. Too thin boned so even though Pierre could fight, he couldn’t be taken seriously. The only series I liked him in was ‘No Regrets’ as where had plenty of screen time in first few episodes.

  3. Problem is entertainment companies concentrate too much on ones look now. I remember back in the days looks was a plus, not a necessity. Just look at actors like ah chan, Sandra ng, Kent Cheng and many more. They have zero looks and all talent. Problem is these are no longer of main ingredient.

      1. @m0m0 Yes, you pointed out another fact. Every one of those actors before were very versatile. Now….
