Roxanne Tong Wants To Be Manlier for “Smiling Across the Mortal World”

Still recovering from the COVID-19 outbreak, the cast and crew of TVB’s new costume drama Smiling Across the Mortal World <一笑渡凡間> is taking extra precautionary actions in sanitizing the film set while shooting the series at a country park in Hong Kong.

The new comedy series stars Edwin Siu (蕭正楠), Roxanne Tong (湯洛雯), and Sammy Sum (沈震軒); and tells the story of a young Ji Gong, a Buddhist monk who possesses supernatural powers.

Smiling Across the Mortal World is Edwin’s first television drama since completing work for Amelia’s Rhapsody <愛美麗狂想曲> in October 2019. Exclaiming that he has rested well, Edwin is quickly readjusting his lifestyle to accommodate hectic filming schedules.

Asking if he and his wife, Priscilla Wong (黃翠如), had been working on “making a human” during their break, Edwin said, “I am already working hard in being a human (improving myself). I’ll leave everything else to fate! But our cooking skills did improve during our break!”

Roxanne plays an iron-faced female constable who is a foil to the energetic and positive Ji Gong. “I have to be expressionless and manly,” shared Roxanne. “Even the producer was surprised that I could play such a character! I’ve always wanted to do a role like this one. I wouldn’t mind if I could get even manlier. (How are you handling your action scenes?) To be honest, I’m not a kung fu star, so all I can do is just practice as much as I can. In between takes I will consult the action choreographer on how to do a few moves. I have to at least look the part!”

  1. I am impressed with Roxanne’s performance in Forensic Heroes. It seems like she is the only human in a series populated by heartless preachy callous non humans. But Edwin, again?!
