Ruco Chan Switches Career Tracks to China?

TV King Ruco Chan (陳展鵬) used to have drama productions airing almost every year, but recently some netizens have noticed that his screen presence has become less frequent. As TVB continues to launch new dramas and introduce fresh casts, he has not been seen starting work on any new series for quite some time, leading “Ruco Chan has no dramas to film” to emerge as a topic of online discussion.
Holding fan meet-and-greets where “venue rental is cheaper”
At the same time, Ruco’s activities in the mainland market have increased in intensity, with him often travelling back and forth to mainland China to take part in fan meet-and-greet events and commercial performances in recent years. Denying speculation that he has shifted his career focus to mainland China to cash in, he said, “It’s actually mainly a venue issue. Hong Kong is possible too, but the cost is high, whereas mainland China offers more choices and much more supporting infrastructure.” A familiar face up north, Ruco has even collaborated with travel agencies to attend “celebrity dinners,” such as an Easter limited dinner in Dongguan, where fans pay a fee to dine with him, interact with him up close, and take commemorative photos.
Denies having no dramas to film
Responding to swirling talk that he’s had no dramas to film at a TVB City event at Tseung Kwan Oon March 27, the former TV king said, “Actually, there are more and more productions now; it’s just that the production model has changed (to multimedia) now. I’m very grateful that so many people support me, whether it’s acting in dramas or hosting different kinds of programs. I do have one drama to film this year, and there will be another one coming up after that,”
Reflecting on over-exposure in previous years, where he used to have up to “three or four” dramas airing at the same time, Ruco responded, “In fact, that’s not easy for us actors either, and viewers may also get tired of seeing us. Right now, what matters most is hoping that we can produce work of quality,”
Reiterating that Hong Kong is his home, Ruco said, “What makes me especially happy now is that everyone really likes Cantonese, and people have started to study the history and culture of our language. Cantonese actually has a lot of fascinating, nuanced aspects, and there is a lot about it that is worth appreciating and referencing”.
