Ruco Chan Dresses as Transgender Dancer in “Chinatown”

Filming for TVB drama, Chinatown <唐人街>, is currently under way.  Cast members Ruco Chan (陳展鵬), Natalie Tong (唐詩詠), Grace Wong (王君馨), Philip Ng (伍允龍), Tiffany Lau (劉穎鏇), and Yuen Qiu (元秋) were filming at TVB Studios today, in which a set was built to resemble the streets of 1960s Bangkok Chinatown.

Following the precedent set by his previous dramas, producer Jazz Boon’s (文偉鴻) Chinatown will feature lots of hand-to-hand combat scenes, which will test the stamina of the cast. Ruco said, “There are many fighting scenes, which are fast, ruthless, and precise. The script is 30 percent shorter than a regular drama since there are so many action scenes. Viewers will love these effects.”

Mixing action with humor, Chinatown also has some unexpected surprises. Filming a lion dance scene with Philip Ng today, Ruco revealed that he will also have to dress as a transgender dancer in the drama. He laughed, “[The costume] is quite sexy, with some revealing parts. I have to wear [pads] to give a ‘career line effect’. I can measure up to Miss Hong Kong contestants.”

Prepared for Wife Giving Birth

Since filming for Chinatown just started last month, Ruco expects it will coincide with the time when his wife Phoebe Sin (單文柔) will be giving birth. But Ruco is not anxious, as the couple has nearly completed preparations for the baby’s arrival. Left with only a few more things to do, Ruco is just filled with a great sense of anticipation.

“We haven’t decided whether to deliver the baby naturally or get a Cesarean section yet. Even if we schedule a Cesarean section, [Phoebe] may still go into labor early.” Asked if Phoebe is having a boy or a girl, Ruco remained discrete, “I can’t say yet. But the baby’s English name will start with the letter Q, since it will be between our names which start with P and R.”

  1. I hate how TV uses transgender people as jokes. And did he mean he was dressed as a drag queen? Because drag is performance art, whereas being transgender is life. People don’t dress as transgender, they just are transgender.

It is silly that celebrities think they can choose natural birth or C-section. This is a medical decision made by the doctor and should not be purely for convenience. I get that they are busy and it is important to know when baby will be born, but they should plan where to deliver better.

I do like the Q name idea, it is cute and makes as much sense as any other way of choosing a name.

    1. @potatochip yea :/ they shouldn’t think that they can choose between natural or c-section. All doctors should advice them that natural is best for the baby, just like breastfeeding is bl00dy painful, but it’s best for the baby (I’m listing the negative to show that despite that, you need to push through). And you should have talked this out with your partner like 2 months before giving birth at least.

      1. @littlefish Yes, I agree, vaginal is best in most situations, but in some (breech, fetal distress, certain maternal conditions, etc) C-sections may be necessary. Birthing should not be a menu for parents to choose from and they should follow medical advice. And breastfeeding is best but goodness, it was not a fun process.

      2. @littlefish
Not much knowledge in this area but I feel a c-section is chosen largely because it takes the least out of the celebrity in terms of energy. The appearance of the mother afterwards can look like she hadnt even given birth which is suitable for celebrities. Also they can choose their preferred date.

      3. @jimmyszeto it’s not great as it will require more time to rest in between pregnancy, and they need to be extra careful the next time they pregnant. Also natural birth can give you that appearance as well. Many women are just that lucky.

  2. Sounds cheap tacky and gimmicky. And lemme guess, Ruco will play a 20 something naive guy (same guess as @jimmyszeto). He’s too old and too cunning looking for this sort of role.

    1. @passingby2 after the unholy alliance I have very little hope for this drama. AFWFW didn’t have a great storyline but at least some of the surrounding characters were interesting… And then it got worse with TUA.

      1. @passingby2 tell me about it… I kept watching TUA because I thought it might get better… And when AFWFW became a mess I was too far along to stop watching

    1. @orchid123 I am hoping for Quinn. Quincy, even though traditionally a male name, may be fun for a girl, too. It also has a better flow – Quincy Chan. There are Chinese names with Q also.

      1. @passingby2
Don’t have much of a choice if they stubbornly decide to stick with Q. Their English names likely made randomly when they were old anyway so PQR means nothing. It’s just another attention seeking tactic after that Big Big Channel announcement and wedding…

      2. @jimmyszeto I was thinking that too, Q really limits their choices.

It’s hard to not think that these guys are using their personal life events as publicity

      3. @tungamy
Is it a girl or do we know yet? Sorry, don’t really care about news about this couple to know. Actually we don’t know yet based on that article. Don’t know why I was thinking of girls names only. I guessing Queen/Queenue if girl and Quentin if boy since Ruco is a attention seeker so he’ll say he wants him to be Quentin Tarantino. My preferred choice was best sounding Q name is Quest…

      4. @passingby2
‘Question’ to me sounds like question. We here have never used Quest as short for a question. Quest is ‘going on a exciting journey or activity’…

      5. @jimmyszeto I hope not for Queenie or Queen. I know about our other discussion with Rafael, so I won’t belittle the name if that’s their choice, but it wouldn’t be my first choice. “Ruco” is a made up name that actually sounds fitting and cool for an entertainer. Perhaps, he will make up something different that also fits their child.

  3. If we want to wait for a series we might as well wait for ‘Assassin’ with Wayne Lai and Moses. At least they have proven to be able to carry any series while we have already seen how terrible the last half of ‘Fist Within Four Walls’ and the whole of ‘the Unholy Alliance’. It seems crazy that they are making another series with the same cast.

    1. @jimmyszeto I don’t have high hopes for this series. Too many cultures that sound like they will stereotype and butcher. Jazz Boon is not subtle or deep enough to produce a sophisticated emotional drama. It will be mindless fluff.

      1. @potatochip
They are saying there are so many action scenes so series shorter normal scenes. That’s nothing new in his previous 2 Ruco starring series. The other 2 series had so much action and additional bad guys it became a whole big mess. The Unholy Alliance was trash so unbelievable they are making another by pretending the it was a success….

      2. @jimmyszeto I think Ruco and Joel are much more believable fighters than Moses and Wayne, but a series should be more than pretty fighting. The cast isn’t the issue. The problem with Unholy Alliance (and probably this series) is that the format works okay for a raunchy 2 hour movie. When you stretch out fluff like this for a 20-30 hour series, it loses its entertainment value and becomes repetitive and uninspiring.
