Rumored Cast of TVB’s “Triumph in the Skies 2020” Include Angelababy and Yang Mi

At the Entertainment Expo Hong Kong last Spring, TVB announced its plans to produce a third installment to its highly success Triumph in the Skies <衝上雲霄> series, temporarily titled Triumph in the Skies 2020. Over 200 million yuan (HK$226 million) will be invested on the threequel, and it will be a collaboration with Tencent’s Penguin Pictures. Among TVB’s other co-productions with Penguin Pictures included Line Walker: The Prelude <使徒行者2>, Deep in the Realm of Conscience <宮心計2深宮計>, and Heart and Greed <溏心風暴3>.

In an interview with TVB’s Assistant General Manager Felix To (杜之克), the TVB executive confirmed that Triumph in the Skies 2020 will be mainly set in Mainland China, and will feature cast members from both China and Hong Kong.

Though Felix To did not reveal the official cast list, there are rumors that only Francis Ng (吳鎮宇), who portrayed the pilot Sam Tong throughout the series, will be the only returning cast member. Chilam Cheung (張智霖) and Myolie Wu (胡杏兒), who portrayed the siblings Jayden Koo and Summer Ha in Triumph in the Skies 2, may not return, as their agency Digital China still have disagreements with TVB. There was another rumor that William Chan (陳偉霆) may appear in the series as a new role, but his agency EEG stated that William has not been in contact with TVB about the drama.

As for Mainland China’s side of the casting, there’s been talks that TVB and Tencent have been courting Angelababy, Yang Mi (楊冪), Dilireba (迪麗熱巴), and Huang Zitao (黃子韜) about new roles. However, neither TVB nor Tencent have confirmed this news to be true.

This is where everything is heading so we will either have to watch or end up with nothing to watch. In a few years time, I doubt there will be any fully natural Cantonese spoken series. We will be watching co-mainland productions dubbed with a mixture of Hong Kong and mainland stars. The winners will be the TV stations, actor/actresses(better pay) and the mainland audience. People like us who have grown up watching TVB will be struggling….

      1. @jimmyszeto Yup….that is definitely the direction, though unfortunately, the Mainland-TVB collaborations have mostly sucked. Aside from DITROC, which I personally felt sucked but from a ratings standpoint, it was decent, all the other Mainland co-productions have suffered low ratings and poor word of mouth. The latest co-production to fall into this category is Another Era, which only managed to garner an average rating of 21.3 points throughout its run so far (the last week of September, ratings went all the way down to 19 points…) and the audience feedback has been poor – that series cost 100 million HKD to make, boasts a supposedly “all-star” cast, and featured aesthetically pleasing on location filming in various locations (and it had the advantage of piggy backing off of At the Threshold of an Era’s success). With that type of investment, the series still failed miserably — so what makes TVB think that putting similar investment (investing hundreds of millions into the production and also collaborating with Mainland) in yet another spinoff / sequel to another popular franchise is going to work? As much as I love Francis Ng, even he won’t be able to save Triumph 2020 (especially if he is going to be the only one holding down the fort on the HK side).

For Cantonese series, I’m putting my hope in ViuTV now, though to be honest, not all their series are good, but at least they are putting in the effort and overall, their series (the ones they produce themselves that is) are better quality and more refreshing to watch with the varied casts and well-written scripts. As far as web series go, still waiting for OCTB season 2 as well as the latest offerings from Fox Asia….outside of those, there honestly isn’t much hope for HK / Cantonese series anymore….

      2. @anon Haven’t heard anything concrete about either one. OCTB crew last updated their FB page in September but didn’t post anything definitive…there are tons of comments asking when season 2 will be coming out but no response so far….haven’t read anything in particular outside of that. Fox Asia last updated Stained’s FB page back in June – I don’t think that series will come out any time soon, as last I heard, they had re-edited the series into a movie and it’s currently doing its run through the various film festivals, so probably earliest release will be some time in early 2019 (purely guessing here).

      3. @llwy12 @jimmyszeto @anon I ain’t looking forward to looking forward to watching the third installment. I only liked the original of Triumph in the Skies compared to the sequel which was a major disappointment. I don’t like that they’re breaking up a couple that was established in the first series (Francis/Myolie) even though I’m not a huge fan of the pairing. I think it’s completely silly and absurd bringing in a Zoe’s lookalike. Summer’s character shouldn’t even exist in the sequel. Don’t understand why the script writer have to kill of Zoe’s character and make her pair up with Ron. Couldn’t they find another actress to play as Issac’s love interest instead? Can’t the writers think of a better plot for a married Sam and Zoe? It would have been much more interesting if they have continued the storyline of Sam and Zoe in the sequel and showed their married life.

I also hate the fact that the writer failed to mention what happened to the original cast members. The original characters was just written off without any explanations. As if they never existed in the first place. No mention at all. I know the original cast won’t appear in the sequel, but the scriptwriter should have at least mention what happened to Belle Donald, Zita, Chris, Ruby and Paul’s characters in dialogue.

      4. “unknown” has been banned. But he will come back for sure under another alias. Previously known as “bubbletea” and “kmfayb”. Not too hard to spot…always end up having arguments with other users in one way or another.

      5. @passingby yes, definitely talking like it’s the same person. There were many former aliases too, I lost track of them. He tends to like arguing with @jimmyszeto so it’s not too hard to spot. 🙂

      6. @jimmyszeto yes it looks like that’s the direction it’s heading. But I find mainland actors suck they are even worse than the current TVB actors

  1. i don’t like either of them. oh well, too early to tell anyways with what’s going on in china. they could be jailed up before the cast could be confirmed.

  2. Will watch it only if they make it one episode long and everyone dies from a plane crash in the first 10 mins.

      1. @fighter01 Not exactly a fan of the 1st installment though I did recall watching most of it. As for the sequel, did not bother with it after reading that they got a Myolie lookalike to play another character’s love interest. Like you have mentioned, it was too ridiculous for me.

  3. 1. They should stop milking on all these sequels and prequels, not with the current quality of their production

    2. AB cannot act.

    3. None of TVB collaboration with Mainland China have been good and I really do not enjoy listening to Canto dubbed in some of the cast but I guess this trend is inevitable. Sigh.
