Shu Qi’s Support of Donnie Yen Results in Exposure of Old Nude Photos

With Vincent Zhao (赵文卓) and Donnie Yen’s (甄子丹) recent verbal spat, stemming from disputes on the set of Special Identity <特殊身份>, many celebrities felt compelled to take sides and vouch for the integrity of the martial arts superstars. Stars who have sided with Donnie include: Shu Qi (舒淇), Chapman To (杜汶泽), Leon Lai (黎明), Kara Hui (惠英红), and Wong Jing (王晶). The artists vouching for Vincent’s integrity included: Yuen Wah (元华), Yuen Biao (元彪), Yang Mi (杨幂), Eason Chan (陈奕迅), Timmy Hung (洪天明) and Leung Ka Yan (梁家仁).

Last week, Shu Qi supported former Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen <精武风云·陈真> costar, Donnie Yen, in a Weibo post. She wrote, “Donnie is a person who highly respects and enjoys his work. He is very serious about everything, hoping to make things more perfect for the audience, by improving his character and movies. Even if the weather were extremely cold or his muscles were cramped, Donnie Yen will hold back his discomfort and infuse his performances with enthusiasm and without any complaints when the camera rolls. He is a good big brother, good actor, and good man without any complaints.”

Shu Qi’s vocal support of Donnie Yen resulted in some fanatic fans who disagreed with her perspective, who decided to widely circulate her old nude photos from her early career. Visibly upset by the surfacing of her old nude photos, Shu Qi deleted over 1,000 of her Weibo blog posts and discontinued the following of all her former contacts on March 26th. Since there were over 10 million fans who had followed Shu Qi’s Weibo blog, her actions of erasing all previous blog entries aroused heated debate.

Shu Qi’s past appearances in Hong Kong Category III movies were still deeply rooted in audience’s minds. However, her hard efforts in acting have also gained her wider acceptance and critical acclaim in recent years. The debate of why mainland China was able to tolerate adult video stars, such as the popular Sola Aoi, but not Shu Qi, became a hotly discussed topic.

A portion of the online community defended Shu Qi strongly, with one netizen remarking, “If China can tolerate Sola Aoi, why can it not tolerate Shu Qi? Were her efforts from all these years wasted?” Another passionate remark was, “She (Shu Qi) has slowly put her clothes back on and became a good actress. Why do you need to expose her old scars? What a bunch of brain-disabled morons…so senseless.”  One netizen remarked that aside from the nudity, there were other reasons behind Shu Qi’s current fame. “Not every woman who takes her clothes off will become successful. Behind the scenes, there is much blood and sweat, who can see that? Shu Qi, even if you have filmed Category III or adult videos, you are the most pure goddess in our hearts!”

Many netizens were upset that Shu Qi’s seemingly innocent remark, vouching for Donnie Yen’s integrity, brought upon a personal attack on her instead.

  1. The double standard and hypocrisy in China irk me to no end. Japanese AV stars are praised like goddesses while people in China/HK/Taiwan who have taken off their clothes are shunted and get slammed in every way possible.

    1. That is because China is not Japan in this regard. And never will be. Japan is a society which scoffs at women doing what women do and yet claps excitedly at AV stars where some do dress like young teenagers acting out of rather questionable situation. The problem is not the society here. The problem is Shu Qi. Since she took the decision to disrobe, she should live by it.

      1. I’m talking about Chinese mainlanders treating Japanese AV stars like goddesses, but throw dirt on people like Shu Qi and Tang Wei.

      2. Cloud, maybe because AV Actress didn’t act as if disrobing is for art but rather simply as means to their work? Whilst Tang Wei, etc disrobed in what they call art films? Therefore the hypocrisy amongst the industry and themselves?

      3. I think the double standard comes from the fact that those AV actress are Japanese, while Shu Qi are Chinese. It’s a ‘they’ and ‘us’ problem. ‘They’ can be whatever they like. It’s their problem. But, ‘us’ must have standard, must have moral.

I watch ‘Boys?’ recently, and there’s a character in the series that are good friends with a couple of gay men. But, when she found out her own younger brother is gay, she went ballistic.

      4. i totally agree. If you had such a past then live with it i/o of hiding it and just dont want to talk about it anymore? how can you, you are a celeb live with it hahaa..lol…

    2. *Just so that people won’t misunderstand me. I’m responding to the article where it says Chinese mainlanders who are able to tolerate and praise Japanese AV stars, but shun their own when they do nudity.

    3. Japanese AV goddesses are different because they are in Japan and I blv Japanese are more open with sex than Chinese. If in Japan, sex is something normal, natural demand then in China, sex is still a sensitive topic that mothers dun like to tell daughters. Plus, the AV goddesses only sell sex on screen, they still consider themselves as actresses, not a call girl and never a call girl.

      1. Sell sex onscreen or off what’s the difference, LOL.

      2. Sex is definately a lot more open in Japan rather than China. Isn’t Japan one of the leaders in producing porn??

      3. thats actually bull haha actress’ in a good name only but in reality awwww…..haha

    4. Didn’t know mainlanders treated AV starts like goddesses. If true it’s really a joke.

      1. I think most young men in the mainland are obsessed with Sorai Aoi the popular AV porn star. It may sound like a joke but it’s a reality that mainland youngsters are now changing their mindset as they no longer view porn is something to be ashamed etc..Those who see porn as something shameful are usally those older generation lol.. Can’t blame them for saying Shu Qi “cheap” and etc, most of these movies that have Shu Qi are usually meant for older generation or mature ppl’s viewing lol..

      2. Oh, Sora Aoi. AV is already porn :P. BTW, I dun rmb Sora is ranked hard AV or mild AV.

      3. how do you consider one is hard? maybe I can tell cuz my bro used to have some collections of sora aoi lol..

      4. She is from which studio? Do the content includes S&M? If has, it’s hard.

      5. Fox, you are so knowledgeable in this area that I must admit defeat, ROFL.

      6. Uhm, these ones are Japan’s culture and I admit I love Japan’s culture a lot so I want to understand about it. These things are basic knowledge and if you have a heart to find out, you can find it.

      7. I suppose I should explore more of the Japanese culture then, LOL

      8. I also did not know that… I guess people view foreigners in a different light than their own…

  2. Yeah, I know lots of people dislike her.

I just think that she is really gorgeous on camera.

    1. I think she’s just lucky to have won the best actress thing.. her acting is just medicore imo.

      1. Vj, totally agree with you. Every role is the same to me. And I can’t stand her voice.

      2. I think her Cantonese is not that great either.

      3. Veejay, I always thought she looks weird but she has the right attitude, sort of. I never liked her acting, can’t stand the way she speaks and I never thought she is a good actress to begin with. But she did take a huge risk earlier in her career and successfully left the soft porn industry so for that I give her credit.

      4. Funn,

I dont mind that she’s been in a soft porn industry before but to me, I find her acting to be pretty medicore unlike those like Tony Leung or Nick Cheung..Even nic Tse has better acting skill than her. She got the unique looks but acting wise, she’s still lacking. Im not like those ppl who judge her from her past lol.

      5. I think her acting is up to the role. For some kinds of role, she can do good.

      6. I think her acting is ok, but she will always be associated with porn or porn related. It seems like an image that she can never escape from.

      7. Yeap, average actress and her cantonese..well, she speaks it as well as Daniel Wu which in my opinion is horrid. Does anyone noticed that everytime Daniel Wu speaks cantonese it sounds english and when he speaks english it sounds chinese!?
Actually, what is SHuQi first language? Mandarin?

  3. I’ve never watch any of Shu Qi’s Cat III movies but I do acknowledged that she’s a good actress. Nobody can rob her of her hard work just by a few old nude photos!

Everybody deserved to voice their own opinion and who give a damn whether you like it or not? Just because these so-called netizens hide behind the computer screen, they assume it gives them the right to trash, bully or mock others. What a bunch of sick online community!

  4. She voiced her personal opinion of Donnie and not any time did she diss Vincent Zhou. Why are ppl so concerned about her supporting Donnie? Geezz.. she wasn’t the only one, lots of other artists did too…

Shu Qi is one of the soft-porn actresses that went on and had a successful career. She’s a good actress, and her acting has been acknowledged and she’s also very sexy but haters just can’t accept her past. Very unfortunate, she didn’t want to do porn. She only did it in the younger years because she was relatively unknown, poor, need money, had to repay debts for family and got persuaded by the big guns to do porn for a few years …. success comes at a price, no matter how hard she tries, she can never erase her past.

But ppl don’t ever consider that. They brand her as a ‘bad woman’ or ‘sl*t’ because she filmed some Cat III movies. But i think if she had a choice, she wouldn’t have done it in the first place.

    1. she was young and naive, rather than poor and in debt. supposedly, veronica yip was her idol who won acting awards after stripping off early in her career, and shu qi wanted to follow in her footsteps.

sho qi has said many, many times that she regrets her decision to film cat 3 movies, but i doubt she would never have achieved the success she has today without going down this road. i think she is actually extremely lucky to switch from cat 3 to mainstream movies. she got her second chance already.

      1. Agree that if Shu Qi did not film cat 3 movies, she might never be that popular. She is extremely lucky to switch from cat 3 to mainstream movies. She got her second chance already.

  5. Shu Qi brainless.. Donnie has change his attitude.. it is not the old Donnie which i supported.. shame to you.. don’t give up Vincent.. you are great!!!!!!

    1. Sound like u r a personal friend of vincent and u know demn…. well hah!

  6. It’s 2012 so I don’t think people care if she did a few soft porn a million years ago. However, her acting is not that great, and her voice is like nails on a chalkboard.

  7. It’s disgusting that they got her old pics into this topic. BUT what I don’t get really.. why did she delete all her weibo messages because of that? What’s that for? I don’t get it!
I mean, COME ON, EVERYBODY on the internet knows her old sex pics! They are EVERYwhere. When you just innocently google her name, it’s the FIRST thing you see!

I feel sorry for her that so many people attacked her on Weibo, seriously! BUT… to delete her Weibo stuff is too much of a “drama queen” act for my taste. It’s stupid.

    1. maybe her past is her weak spot. maybe she feels ashamed. obviously we as third person will never understand how she feels. easy for you to say because those nude pics are not of you.

and weibo can get quite nasty. donnie yen and his wife’s weibo have been bombarded constantly. 18000 replies to a post he made. Maybe that was too much for Shu Qi. The haters dirtied her wall with offensive words and pictures….. and she had no choice but to close it down, coz haters won’t stop.

      1. But she didn’t delete her complete Weibo. She’s still posting! She simply only deleted all her old messages and the people she followed. And these didn’t have ANYthing do to with this topic!
This looks like a kid’s act.. very unmature and even trying to get even more attention because that what’s happening now. People who didn’t see her nude pics, will start searching for them now because she deleted her Weibo messages… She should think before she acts.

      2. It is really really hard to escape from anything you have done in the past or at anytime in your life that has made you ashamed…

    2. totally agreed with u, Claudia. Juz bcos of few words frm some ppl, she deleted her Weibo stuff. Mayb she should learn to b a high EQ person. Working in entertaintment industry, u wil hear all good and bad stuff. Being such a kiddo, wil not solve the problem.

      1. hhaahah LOL… i know i agree w/one of the other reviwers here… if u goggle her u r bound to see all her old shameful right? hahaha deleting posts so naive lol haha

  8. She’s so dumb. Upset? Then don’t take the nude gep photos in the first place! We all know if you do these kinds of s***, it will come back to haunt us.

  9. And those nude gep photos: she has no one but herself to blame.

  10. Shu Qi’s biggest mistake was reacting to the exposure of photos that are “already out there” – who cares? Anyone who wants to search could have found them.

She should have kept her cool and thanked those people for the additional publicity. That would have angered them. Instead, she deletes her Weibo and has a hissy fit. That is EXACTLY the kind of response those that posted the pictures wanted.

  11. Shu Qi shouldn’t be ashamed of the past, the p ast is the past and she has managed to break away from the soft porn era pretty well.

Chinese are just so prude when is comes to sex.

In Hollywood, you will find a lot of the best actress oscar winners have done sex scenes and it has not hampered thier careers.

just an example, Halle Berry, Meryl Streep, Natalie Portman, Nicole Kidman, Gwenyth Paltrow, Kate Winslet,

    all done nudes scenes…

    1. I agree. It’s a cultural thing. I watched this documentary and it said that Kate Winslet has stripped down for over 200 scenes in her career.

      1. i think so that Titanic woman is not ashame to strip again n again ahhaa.. i saw a few the suckiest movies ever n not all nude scenes r tasteful, some r very WEIRD period haha but yes american culture they dont care about stripping it for the roles if they dont do it, they might be label as abnormal?? hahaha lol..

    2. I think it is definately cultural…I think Chinese are just still very conservative when it comes to sex or anything sex related.

    3. Demi Moore also posted nude before she became famous.

    4. Yes Shu Qi should not be ashamed of her porn past as this made her famous, more opportunities to became famous and wealthy from it…On the other hand, Shu Qi would regret being a porn star as I am 100 certain there would be guys she was interested in but these guys or their families would have shun her because of her porno past. Does not matter whether someone is cauasian or asian, when they are introduced to the future family-in-law, the chances of the father-in-law, brother-in-law having viewed ShuQi full nude shots are high. (make interesting dinner conversation thou).

  12. Shu Qi has openly talked about her softcore porn career in several interviews. If you’re interested, do take a look at them. She had a sad life. Shu Qi’s not a brilliant actress, but she’s very hard working.

    1. Agreed. Shu Qi’s childhood life wasn’t that great. But she reaped what she sowed. I hope she could be more tough.

      1. Well, let’s put it this way; my own childhood life was not great either and I didn’t want to ashame myself and my family for doing that (even though I’d the same qualification in terms of body and look). To excuse herself for doing softporn movies because of poor life was just as tasteless as her. She just wanted fast money and live a good life by just spreading her legs… Period!

      2. Samantha@wunderkind

You are disgusting! You might have done nothing regretting thus far, but that does not grant u a right to criticize others in the way u did. Has she done anything bad to u for u to pass such an uncalled-for comments. This really reflect on one’s poor bringing-up.

  13. Never watched her CAT3 movie but i might do a search lol
She acting is so so, not that great. She is very lucky actress.

  14. I don’t think she’s a great actress, neither do i think she’s pretty, but I do find her genuine and personable from the responses she gives to reporters who interview her, which is much more than one can say about most of the other artistes out there. Not her fan but I wish her the best.

    1. yes, this part i agree. she sounds honest in a way sometimes on interviews and functions unlike some very very fake responses.

      1. Hey guys

Though I have watched a few movies acted by Shu Qi before, I do not consider myself a fan of Shu Qi. However, I find her acting okay and she seems to have the right attitudes and not pretentious.

I’ll like to post to u the following questions:

        1. Do u know Shu Qi or Vincent personally that sanction u to criticize Shu Qi the way u did?
        2. We all have a past and I dare u guys to claim that u have done nothing regreful in your past?
        3. Did she in anyway condemned Vincent when she expressed her view on the other guy?
        4. As we are all fighting for our rights for a free speech, is it an offence for her to express her view?
        5. If u think that it is an offence for her to express her view, than how about your comments on her?
        6. How would u like it if that was u or your loved ones who was being attacked in the way u did to Shu Qi?
        7. Don’t u think that u should be grateful when your past is better than others but at the same time not to make fun of those who were less fortunate by passing those idiotic comments?
        9. What did u gain by passing those hurtful remarks?
        10. Did her past affect u in any way that u have to humiliate her?
        11. Is it thrilled to rub salt on other’s wound?
        12. Don’t u practise humanity?

May god bless your souls to be a better persons.
