Sire Ma Reflects on the Past 5 Years After Relationship Scandal

Former TVB actress Sire Ma (馬賽) can identify two major turning points in her life: the first was winning second runner-up at the 2008 Miss Hong Kong Pageant, solidifying her television career; the second was in 2014, when she was hit with a relationship scandal that singlehandedly destroyed the television career that she was once promised.

Once considered as TVB’s most promising young actress, Sire’s relationship and video scandal in 2014 turned everything upside down for her. 2014 was Sire’s toughest year. She had to consistently remind herself that she had to stay strong, that she could not fall down, that she had to protect her body from crashing. She would never forget the moment she cried while eating an entire bowl of noodles. She kept crying, and couldn’t stop.

Sire wants to thank many people who had helped her through her lowest times, especially director Ann Hui (許鞍華). Just as she thought she would get no more job offers, her manager received a call from a film studio, asking her if Sire was interested in doing an audition for a short film directed by Ann. Her costar would be Francis Ng (吳鎮宇).

Sire remembered being so shocked by the news that she was in denial. She probably cried for at least 30 minutes.

At the audition, Sire felt like she was being reborn.

Restarting in Beijing

Sire decided to leave everything in Hong Kong behind for a fresh start in Beijing. She went to auditions every day, more times than she could count. She went from a TVB leading actress to a mere extra, a background actor, for many films and TV shows. That was her life for two years.

It humbled her. Sire went from having everything—a car, a home, and helpers—to being alone in Beijing.

But all those years were worth it. Sire now manages herself with her own studio, and plans on making a comeback in Hong Kong, where everything started for her.

The 32-year-old is currently married to a man known by the surname Ji. He is an ordinary man whom Sire met in 2015. They lost contact for two years. It wasn’t until 2017, when Sire’s grandmother passed away, when they resumed contact. Both Sire and her husband prefer a minimalistic life. They don’t even own a wedding ring. They have one daughter, Camellia.

As Sire recalled the days she was carrying her daughter, she remember how she was stuck at home, imprisoned with her own thoughts. She felt like she had no career at the time, and developed social anxiety. She felt useless, and while the recovery process seemed slow, the future remains bright if you believe in it.

This article was edited on August 24, 2019 at 3:41 p.m. to correct Francis Ng’s Chinese name and the passing of Sire’s grandmother, not mother.

I remember we all blasted her for that. Cheating the system for her own selfish advantages. Now she talks about not owning a wedding ring and living a cheap life. BS.

Staying a few months and giving birth to her daughter in Los Angeles had cost her tons of money. Not many people can afford it. Don’t why it was reported “Sire and her husband prefer a minimalistic life. They don’t even own a wedding ring.” Very funny!!

  1. Really? Don’t owe a wedding ring? Yes, like ppl need to know that you didn’t try to con that rich older woman for her money when you were a one time lesbian? hahah LOL…Come on….haha what BS really….

  2. I found a typo, it mentioned:
‘Sire wants to thank many people who had helped her through her lowest times, especially director Ann Hui (許鞍華). Just as she thought she would get no more job offers, her manager received a call from a film studio, asking her if Sire was interested in doing an audition for a short film directed by Ann. Her costar would be Francis Ng (吳彥祖)’

English name is Francis Ng, which is 吳志強,
Chinese name 吳彥祖, is Danial Wu.

    So which actor is it?

  3. The yahoo article says her costar was 吳鎮宇, not Daniel Wu.

“It wasn’t until 2017, when Sire’s mother passed away…” Grandmother, not mother.

  4. Always a good tactic to thank a top director for that extra few secs of publicity. Also shrewd of Sire to suggest that she isn’t materialistic and not mention her past scandal…
