Tavia Yeung May Leave TVB in April, Turns Down “The Conspirators”

Tavia Yeung (楊怡) may not renew her TVB management contract once it expires in April. With the future of her contract uncertain, the actress had to turn down a role in TVB’s upcoming drama The Conspirators <與諜同謀>, which stars Gallen Lo (羅嘉良). The Conspirators begins production in March.

The 36-year-old said she was excited for the opportunity to work with Gallen when TVB producer Wong Wai-sing (黃偉聲) first offered her the role. But because her contract will end one month into production, she had no choice but to turn it down, adding that it is her responsibility to not jeopardize the project with her contract matters. She felt pity for not being able to work with Gallen.

2016 tvb octoberRumor has it that TVB canceled the broadcast of Tavia’s last TVB drama The Last Healer In Forbidden City <末代御醫> because of her decision to not renew, but costar Roger Kwok (郭晉安) said he is not worried about the rumor.

“This is a big-budget production,” said Roger. “I’ve never heard of a business that would not want to make back its investments.”

The Last Healer In Forbidden City is expected to premiere sometime this year on TVB’s on-demand streaming service, myTV super.

Tavia was a graduate of the 13th TVB artists training class in 1999 and was cast in her first major supporting role in 2000’s The Green Hope <新鮮人>. She won the TVB Anniversary Award for Most Improved Female in 2003 for her performance Vigilante Force <智勇新警界>, Best Supporting Actress in 2008 for Moonlight Resonance <溏心風暴之家好月圓>, Most Popular Female Character in 2009 for Beyond the Realm of Conscience <宮心計>, and Best Actress in 2012 for Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles <名媛望族>. She is the first TVB actress to hold all four major acting accolades.

@lileric Apple Daily reported that Wong Wai Sing intends to cast a new generation actress in the role and they are currently considering Ali Lee, Grace Chan, and a few others. Of course, since the report is from Apple Daily, take it with a grain of salt. Also, I had read that Jacqueline Wong will be playing Gallen’s step-daughter in the series — if that’s true and they end up casting a younger actress as his love interest, well, not sure if I’m going to want to watch anymore.

Regarding Tavia leaving, not surprised of course. Wish her the best of luck!

@lileric Out of all those you listed, only 2 were actually ‘considered’ by the producer to take on the lead role for Gallen’s series.

According to the latest report (the article published in today’s issue of Mingpao Magazine), producer Wong Wai Sing said that Tavia was indeed one of the candidates considered for the lead role, but since she declined, they have no choice but to go with a newer actress that is currently being heavily promoted. He said that the 4 actresses being considered for the lead role are Ali Lee, Grace Chan, Sisely Choi, and Jacqueline Wong — out of those 4, the one who will likely get the role is Ali Lee, since she (according to the producer) ‘matches’ Gallen best and also has the least amount of negative news (plus she is already taking on the lead role in that new series with Liu Kai Chi and Alex Fong and can go right into this series after the other one wraps this month). Jacqueline Wong will still take part in the series and will take on the role of Gallen’s step-daughter — obviously, she will have the most screen time with Gallen aside from the female lead. Oh and Wong Wai Sing also said that Gallen’s series will “have alot of newcomers in it”.

So there you have it — TVB is going the route of having Gallen ‘babysit’ his juniors again in his new series (which to be honest is dumb considering how Wong Wai Sing kept saying throughout the article how difficult it was to get Gallen to come back and all the concessions they had to make in order for it to happen). Gallen was interviewed and of course said he didn’t mind (though I liked the way the reporter put it: “but TVB is ‘using’ you to bring up the newbies”…lol…so blunt!). Well, now my ‘excitement’ about Gallen coming back just went down quite a few notches….let’s see what happens when the ‘official’ announcement comes out (which will probably be soon)….

@lileric Nancy Wu=maybe but I still don’t think she has proven enough charisma. Linda Chung=maybe? Priscilla=No,not proven capable of performing different roles. Elaine= too typecast as a 2nd lead for audience to accept, Selena Li= maybe, if she wants to act these days,Grace and Sisley= NO, terrible acting, Elena Kong= not a lead and looks too old, Mandy Wong= Hasn’t improved since her breakthrough role, Rosina Lam=no fan base, Joey Meng= could be a good option since every pairing she has had in tvb has worked, Louisa So= paired with Gallen in the past and it was not memorable, Alice Chan= not seen any lead actress charisma yet, Natalie Tong= no! Made a living from playing the same role continuously. Ali Lee= might be the best choice of all the inexperienced actresses

Yeah she has achieved all from the bottom to the top. Sad to see her leaving but there’s no reason for her to stay anymore. Man I’d love to see her in the series with Gallen though 🙁

If I recalled correctly, her contracted ended a year or two ago and she extended til now. It’s just time to move on. There’s not much for her to accomplish at TVB after she won BA. Also, her peers are leaving one by one. Another factor is age. She’s been wanting to settle down and start a family.

It can still happen, they just have to write her character off, left for studies and never reply/come back or obligatory flashback death scene, mourning in first half of episode one, etc.

I would have loved the Tavia and Gallen pairing, it’s at least a believable pairing. Could they not draft up a per drama contract or extend it till the production finishes?
Whoever ends up being his partner will have to be somewhat on the same level of acting or else the inexperience will most certainly show against a experienced actor.

    9. jimmyszeto says:

Choosing a new actress with potential to pair with Gallen is the right thing to do. Casting Grace or Sisley though would be disrespectful. Many years ago when Francis Ng got paired with Myolie, Myolie actually had solid grounding in acting so the pairing worked. Bringing Jessica or flora back would be horrible because it will never live up to past series since everyone has gotten older. So my preference will be someone with a good few years experience! Can anyone think of possible good options?

      • @jimmyszeto Gallen Lo is old too. I don’t know about you but I’m getting sick of all those older uncles paired up with twenty or early thirty-somethings. Especially when the age difference serves no in-story purpose.

You can argue that some don’t look their age (Kevin Cheng, Roger Kwok) but Gallen definitely does.

This is extremely disappointing. She would have made a good pair with Gallen. Having those newbies (Grace, Sisley etc) even be consider to be his partners is bad IMO!

Wishing her the best for sure. sigh…
