Wong Cho Lam Introduces New Detective Variety Show

Wong Cho Lam (王祖藍), Alex Fong (方力申), Pakho Chau (周柏豪) and others appeared at a press conference for upcoming TVB variety show, Declared Legally Dead <死因有可疑 >. Cho Lam shared that the detective variety show format has been gaining traction in Asia, and he hopes it can be an opportunity for younger producers to showcase their talents.

More Creative Freedom?

Joining the new managerial ranks at TVB, Cho Lam reached a consensus with Eric Tsang (曾志偉) to give the production crew more space and chances to experiment on programs, without prioritizing viewership numbers as the sole performance benchmark.

Asked about the mostly negative reviews since his return to TVB, with some programs being called out for plagiarism, Cho Lam responded, “Most importantly people are discussing them. To have people notice [what we do] can be a kind of encouragement. We’ve been noticing feedback from the market, and will seek to work on these [areas].”

Just two months on his job as Chief Creative Officer, Cho Lam already realizes that there are plenty of tasks lined up for him, such as meeting with representatives of each department for more in-depth talks. “During this time, we will reflect as one and allow room for minor faults. We do not wish to dampen the spirits of our production colleagues.”

Hoping to build a more tolerant culture, he added, “”We’ll dish out compliments where due and raise discussions if things are less than ideal. I know the work stress is tremendous, and as managers, we do not want to pile it on further.”

Asked about actor Kalok Chow (周嘉洛) standing in for him in wuxia drama Your Highness The Hooligan <痞子殿下>, Cho Lam laughed that all the costumes originally tailored for him would have to be replaced, as Kalok is actually much taller than him. “I really want to go on set to watch. I’m very grateful to Kalok and would love to utter “long live the emperor’ once.”

  1. I hoped to read more about the show than TVB management in this article but I guess it’s fine. I like Cho Lam’s approach. It’s not a bad idea to experiment different things… you’ll never know what works until you get both positive and negative feedback.

  2. So his plan is just copying china & korea variety show? Didn’t know you need Chief Creative Officer for this
A Reddit post could have done the trick not mentioning cheaper.

    1. @sev2
Omg I agree with you, that is what I was thinking. He’s not really thinking of anything new, he’s just ripping off ideas from China and Korea

  3. I’m not liking this guy just plucking out variety shows from everywhere randomly. Also, suddenly, he self elevates himself to big boss stature, portraying himself as a veteran with a wealth of experience and advice.

  4. Uhhh, so what is the show about?
Aside from the Dubbing show all the other new variety shows are basically rehash of what Wong Cho Lam did ten years ago. It’s pretty cringeworthy.

    1. @bubbles23 it does add variety to their programme. It was almost dead before the revamp. Let’s hope that these will bring about changes to their dramas too. While the change may be a tad late, it’s never too late to want to change.

      1. @conan2209 agree change is better than being stagnant, for better or worse but honestly the rest of the variety shows, especially the live variety show is pretty cringe. No wonder everyone is watching Viutv instead.

      2. @bubbles23 I have to agree re the live variety show! Then again, if I cannot see Ali in new dramas, I don’t mind variety shows that has Ali in it ;p

How’s the variety show from Viu? Don’t get a chance to watch it where I am…

      3. @conan2209 actually if you search for Viutv World on YouTube they upload lots of their shows (full ) on there. They have one where they invite people from different industries and talk about their jobs. I forget the name. Lots of travel programs too. Oh more recently there’s the game show with Mirror. Error has a few variety shows but I never watched them.

  5. Another variety show. One variety show they should copy if 2 Days 1 Night. At least promote HK a bit for a bit of fun or 3 meals a day concept. Sorry Wong Cho Lam, he’s just copying from China and Korea and rehash same thing. Disappointing.
