Priscilla Wong and Nancy Wu Tear Up While Trying Out Their Parents’ Careers
TVB’s newest reality series, Ga Chyun Ji Bou <家傳之「保」> invite celebrity guest to take on their parent’s former careers as a way to connect with their family. For its’ promotional event, Priscilla Wong (黃翠如), Nancy Wu (胡定欣) and Shaun Tam (譚俊彦) share their experiences while filming the show.
Priscilla Visits the Fish Market
Despite having frequently visiting the fish market because of her father’s past occupation, Priscilla was very clumsy when faced with the basic skill of gutting a fish. Her lack of experience did not go unnoticed when Priscilla was criticised by the fish stall owner, “Look at how you hold a knife. You probably rarely cook at home!”
As Priscilla’s father worked at a fish stall, Priscilla had strong childhood memory of her father with strong fish smell. Priscilla expressed her gratitude to her father’s silent sacrifices for the family and said, “My father used to work so hard at the fish stall. How many fish did he sell to support our family?”
Priscilla’s husband, Edwin Siu (蕭正楠)) who accompanied Priscilla on stage revealed that he had to deliver a handwritten letter from his father-in-law to Priscilla. Priscilla explained it was a family tradition: “Whenever something significant happens in our family, my dad writes a letter. We call it a family letter. Every time I read one, I’m deeply moved.”
Nancy Works in a Dried Seafood Shop
Nancy shared that she inherited her parents’ craft and was immersed in prepping dried seafood by cleaning sea cucumber and packing mushroom. In one of the scene, Nancy braves the pouring rain and single-handedly lifted heavy boxes. Nancy revealed that she not only inherited her mother’s strong personality but also her mother’s hand-on-approach.
Nancy jokingly admitted that she never helped out at her parent’s shop as a child. Without spoiling the series, Nancy revealed that she was fortunate to have an emotional scene with her “mother’s hand” while filming at a dried seafood shop.
Shaun Gets Mentored at a Tailor Shop
Before becoming an actor, Shaun Tam’s father, Ti Lung (狄龍), was a tailor. For the series, Shaun steps in his father’s former trade and learned the basics of taking measurement, threading, cutting and sewing. Shaun was even challenged to handle expensive fabric.
Shaun revealed that he was proud of his father’s former occupation and in a promotional video clip, 79-years-old Ti Lung beamed with pride as he watches Shaun take on his former craft. Speaking on the legacy he received from his father, Shaun believes that he inherited his father’s drive to give his all in everything he does: “Whatever I do, I try to do my best. I think that part of my personality is really similar to my dad’s.”
In comparison, Ti Lung shares that the legacy between the father and son is as simple as passing down a recipe for instant noodle. Ti Lung explained, “I remember when Shaun went to study in Canada, I was so worried that he wouldn’t have anything to eat in the dormitory. I made him instant noodles with egg. He loved it and asked me to teach him. Now, he makes it for his own son.”
The emotional reality series will air every Sunday at 9:30p.m. starting on October 5th.
