Huang Xiaoming Hates Eliminating Contestants on “Chinese Idol”

In a recent interview with Tencent, mainland Chinese actor Huang Xiaoming (黃曉明) shared about his experiences as a first-time judge on Chinese Idol <中國夢之聲>, the singing competition show based on England’s Pop Idol. Despite netizens’ earlier doubts about his ability to be an effective member of the judging panel, Xiaoming’s heartfelt and realistic performance has earned him the approval of many.

For an artist to cross worlds from acting to singing is not easy, and being a judge on Chinese Idol, despite not having a professional singing background, is even more difficult. Although Huang Xiaoming appears confident in front of the camera, he revealed that he is actually under a lot of pressure. Nevertheless, he has learned to resist it, joking that his secret is to “pretend that I’m not nervous.”

“Actually, you just have to force yourself to adapt,” Xiaoming said. “After you slowly get used to it, then you won’t be nervous anymore.”

What inspires Xiaoming the most about Chinese Idol is seeing the wealth of talent in Chinese youngsters these days, which is why he often seems more upset than the contestants themselves when his favorites are eliminated from the show. Fellow judge and renowned singer Han Hong (韓紅) previously admitted that she does not want to participate in this type of show again, because the eliminations are too upsetting – a sentiment that Xiaoming shares.

“I really want to give a chance to every contestant,” he said, “but competitions are always cruel, and I know there’s no other way. Their departure makes me feel very sad, so I try my best to give them more of a platform to display themselves and realize their dreams.”

Xiaoming’s sympathy with the contestants on Chinese Idol may stem from the fact that they remind him of his past self, before he became famous. He shared that, during that time, his father once told him that he was like a vegetable, waiting on a shelf for someone to select him. “You have to fight to become the best vegetable,” he said, “so the person who does select you won’t regret it.”

  1. why is huangxiaoming a judge? his singing is horrible!

    1. I have seen many judges that are not qualified at all so this is not the first time. But then again, not all judges are good singers themselves. Even on American’s version of American Idol, Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell are not singers themselves but know how to judge who can sing and who can’t.

      1. Agree that not all judges are good singers, but Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson are known for being record producers. Randy Jackson started out as a session musician and has worked with Carlos Santana,Bon Jovi, and Mariah Carey, so he definitely talented. Simon Cowell has a joint venture with Sony Music Entertainment so he has influence.
I think people have beef with HXM because he is an actor-turned-singer so he doesn’t have to work as hard or have the pressure to be a good singer/musician.
Also isn’t Zhang Zi Yi a judge for X-factor, she doesn’t even sing.

      2. Because singers may judge on technique but only producers know how to market. So the best judge is a producer.

Interesting. I agree and find the comparison with a vege very endearing. Anyway my friend was so touched by his performance as a judge. I simply refused to watch.

  3. emotion is good but not too much as we live in the real world.the best win
