More Updates on the Thriller

A letter from the director, Hwang Dong-hyuk.

Depicting brutal killings, Squid Game’s pitch had faced rejection from local networks for close to 10 years, on being deemed unrealistic and grotesque, but eventually landed on top 10 viewership lists in 94 countries, and won its cast and crew nods of international acclaim. Scheduled to start filming in July, trial shooting for the second season has recently commenced, with filming expected to stretch over 10 months into 2024 due to the simultaneous shooting of both seasons 2 and 3.

Playing memorable characters among the 456 cash-strapped players are Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soom, Wi Ha-joon and Jung Ho-yeon, who put their lives on the line in a fatal game, lured by the promises of winning the life-changing prize of 45.6 billion.

While the story is still taking shape, director and screenwriter Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed earlier that the new seasons will start on winner Lee Jung-jae and Frontman Lee Byunghun (Hwang In-ho), who was responsible for operating the games; both actors will reprise their roles. With season 1’s thrilling challenges such as “Red Light, Green Light,” “Dalgona,” “Tug of War” and “Marbles” offering a window into how human beings treat each other, new and thrilling “game concepts” are to be expected in the comebacks to keep viewers hooked.
