China Cracks Down on “Domineering CEO” Dramas

In recent years, dramas themed around “Domineering CEO” trope have become a major trend in China. However, despite its success, audience have often complained these dramas for its exaggerated plots and distorted script, and leading the National Radio and Television Administration of China to ban the popular trope.

The administration held a press conference on September 25th where the Deputy Director, Han Dong (韓冬) identified micro-short dramas as an emerging popular art form. He also stated that some dramas are problematic for its crude content and character setting, and directly criticized “Domineering CEO” as being problematic.

Han Dong noted that micro-short dramas currently have 696 million viewers and the industry is expected to exceed 50 billion yuan this year. As a result of this rapid growth, Han Dong deemed it is necessary to refine management standards and strengthen guidance to ensure the proper creative direction micro-short dramas.

The administration will launch regular oversight and campaigns to address areas of concerns, such as dramas with shocking plotlines, exaggerated headlines to generate attention. The administration also takes issues with dramas with stereotypical characters and cited the example of a “domineering CEO paired with a naïve and sweet girl.” Han Don argued that these issues not only undermine the social value of dramas but it may also mislead young audiences.
