Daniel Wu Joins Cast of “Twilight of the Warriors: The Final Chapter”
Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In <九龍城寨之圍城> adapted from Yu Yi’s novel Kowloon Walled City and the manga of the same name by Andy Seto, was released on May 1, 2024. The film grossed over HK$100 million at the box office, and won nine awards at the 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards, including Best Film and Best Director.
With both a prequel, Dragon Throne and a sequel The Final Chapter in the works, director Soi Cheang (鄭保瑞) had revealed that the team would begin filming the sequel first this year.
Kimura’s showdown with the “Kowloon Four” falls through
Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In was met with an enthusiastic response when released in Japan. In addition to surpassing 500 million yen at the box office, cast actors Raymond Lam (林峯) and Terrance Lau (劉俊謙) also saw their popularity rise sharply. Seeing the film’s strong potential in Japan, director Soi Cheang (鄭保瑞) had long hoped to incorporate Japanese elements into the sequel.
Heartthrob Takuya Kimura had reportedly already agreed last year to take on the role, receiving the script, and even begun training, making it highly possible that he would participate in a Hong Kong film again for the first time since 2046. Based on the story’s development, The Final Chapter will focus on the “Kowloon Four” — Raymond Lam, Terrance Lau, German Cheung (張文傑), and Tony Wu (胡子彤) — as its main characters, and Kimura’s involvement was believed to have included many scenes opposite the four of them.
However, geopolitical tensions had led to Ayumi Hamasaki’s concert in Shanghai suddenly being cancelled, while Raymond’s Tokyo concerts originally scheduled for this year were also postponed eventually due to “various factors under consideration.”
The Twilight of the Warriors production team ultimately decided to end its collaboration with Takuya Kimura, replacing him with Daniel Wu (吳彥祖), who is now based in the United States.
This marks Daniel’s return to the Hong Kong film scene once again, following his return to Hong Kong in 2024 to film Cold War 1994 <寒戰1994>.
