One of Hong Kong’s hugely anticipated “urban legend” films, Back to the Past <尋秦記>, starring Louis Koo, made a surprise appearance at the 27th National Film Promotion Conference film lineup held in Xiamen on May 22, finally lifting the veil of mystery around its release.

Simultaneous Hong Kong & China Box Office Release

Continuing the storyline from the original 2001 TVB drama series, the movie picks up the storyline 19 years later, and features original cast of actors including Louis Koo (古天樂), Raymond Lam (林峯), Jessica Hsuan (宣萱), Sonija Kwok (郭羨妮), and Joyce Tang (滕麗名), but with the notable absence of Kwong Wa (江華), who played the villain Zhao Dao (嫪毒).

A new movie poster was revealed at the event, along with the official announcement that the film will hit theaters during the 2026 Chinese New Year season – in a delay from the earlier plan announced at the Hong Kong Film Awards, which aimed for a 2025 release.

Rewriting the Course of History & the Qin Dynasty

Completed back in July 2019, its time-traveling theme reportedly caused delays due to official restrictions. Now that the film is finally cleared, fans can look forward to a simultaneous Hong Kong-China release.

In addition to Back to the Past, the conference also revealed a surprise entry with Jet Li (李連杰) returns to the big screen after years in Blades of the Guardians <鏢人:風起大漠>. Directed by the legendary Yuen Woo-ping (袁和平), the film promises to be a grand wuxia spectacle for audiences of all ages, drawing on Yuen’s lifelong expertise in martial arts filmmaking to reignite the genre’s spirit across generations.
