Stephanie Ho and Fred Cheng’s Caregiver “Flying” Duties

Singer Stephanie Ho (何雁詩) and her husband Fred Cheng‘s (鄭俊弘) son, Asher Cheng (鄭讚廷), was publicly confirmed in June 2024 to have been diagnosed with the rare genetic condition “Angelman syndrome.” Recently, Stephanie admitted that she has arranged for Asher to move to Vancouver, Canada, to live with his grandmother and have relatives taking care of him, while the couple takes turns flying between the two places.

Though she was slammed by some netizens for “staying in Hong Kong to make money while exiling her sick son”, Stephanie was unfazed and revealed the real reason behind the decision.

On Facing “Cold Violence” in Hong Kong

Stephanie stated bluntly that the sole reason for sending her son to Vancouver is to give him a “better growing environment”. She pointed out that foreign countries have far higher support systems and social tolerance for special-needs children than Hong Kong. In contrast, living spaces in Hong Kong are cramped, and taking a special-needs child out requires enduring enormous mental pressure.

Notably, she revealed that in Hong Kong she had suffered “cold violence” and strange looks from others. She disclosed that she once took her son to a cinema to watch an animated film. Even though she had deliberately chosen the seats with the fewest people in the corner and had prepared for how to handle things, when Asher suddenly made large movements, she could still feel the disgusted stares of nearby audience members, who even seemed to think her son was “acting so crazy.” On the way out, she could only keep apologizing and explaining that her son is a special-needs child.

Enrolled Asher in Local Special Needs School & Full Confidence in Fred

Currently, Asher has enrolled in a proper special-needs school in Vancouver with a dedicated tutor, and is being cared for with the help of his grandmother and relatives. Stephanie and her husband Fred take a “shift system” flying to Canada to accompany their son, ensuring that he never goes a single day without his parents by his side.

Stephanie admitted that over the past nearly a year, she has reluctantly turned down work because she had to fly to Canada at short notice, and at one point felt greatly frustrated. However, she made it clear that she will not give up the Hong Kong market and will continue to fly between the two places in line with her work schedule.

When asked whether a long period of living apart might trigger a marital crisis, Stephanie Ho responded magnanimously that ever since having a child, they have long had no couple’s time together. She and Fred Cheng now have a cooperative relationship as “Team Asher,” with everything putting the child first, and she is full of confidence in her husband and their marriage. She stated bluntly that for the sake of her beloved son, she is willing to pay double the cost in money, physical energy, and spirit, and is willing to endure all kinds of online criticism.
