Luo Yunxi Stars in New Ancient Suspense Drama “Phantom Catcher”
The new ancient suspense drama Phantom Catcher <魅影神捕>, starring popular actor Leo Luo Yunxi (羅雲熙), officially premiered on iQIYI on October 2!
Spanning 30 episodes, the series is set during the 37th year of the Hongyun era in the Great Shi Dynasty. Luo Yunxi plays “Master Qingyang” (Li Si), who infiltrates the Divine Detective Agency to investigate a mystery. There, he meets female forensic examiner Bai Zhenzhu – literally ‘White Pearl’ – played by Shen Yujie (沈羽潔), and constable Meng Rui (played by Fang Yilun 方逸倫). Together, the trio forms an ironclad detective team to solve a series of mysterious cases steeped in Chinese folklore.
Luo Yunxi’s Fresh Characterization: Shedding the “Gentle Nobleman” Image
Luo Yunxi, who has frequently portrayed refined and gentle figures in past costume dramas, takes on a new challenge in Phantom Catcher as constable Li Si.
Dual-Layered Identity: On the surface, Li Si appears to be an easygoing, romantic nobleman, but in reality, he is a disgraced prince who infiltrates the Divine Detective Agency to uncover the truth behind the death of the Fourth Prince.
Meticulous & Strategic Mindset: While he retains his signature ethereal, white-robed aesthetic in certain looks, the character possesses a sharp, highly analytical mind – a marked departure from his previous roles, showcasing Luo Yunxi’s clear ambition and determination to expand his acting versatility.
Pure Mystery Focus with Zero Romantic Distractions
Unlike typical suspense dramas that weave secondary romance storylines between the lead characters, Phantom Catcher dedicates its entire 30-episode run strictly to case-solving and political intrigue. There are no romantic entanglements among the core trio—Luo Yunxi, Shen Yujie, and Fang Yilun. The high-octane narrative stays laser-focused on six major cases to deliver a pure, immersive detective experience.
Eerie Chinese Folklore Aesthetics
The drama centers around six major folklore-inspired mysteries, deeply integrating traditional cultural elements such as puppetry, Gu sorcery prevalent in Miao ethnic regions, and Nuo opera. Through striking visual concepts—such as nine coffin-bound dried female corpses and shadow-puppet vengeful spirits—the production creates a distinct Oriental gothic aesthetic, injecting a fresh visual and narrative style into the suspense genre.
A Powerhouse Creative Team
Phantom Catcher is helm-directed by Zheng Weiwen (鄭偉文)- director of the smash hit The Untamed <陳情令> – following three years of script refinement. Initial audience responses highlight strong praise for the cinematic visuals, martial arts choreography, and tight narrative pacing, reflecting the production team’s high craftsmanship and standards.
