Joey Law Wants to Help His Mother Fulfill Her Celebrity Dream

Playing the role of a strict and demanding gym owner in Girlie Days <她她她的少女時代>, Joey Law (羅天宇) had to have the same strict demands on himself to play the role. He underwent a strict training and diet regiment for three months. He gave up foods that contain high salt, oil, and sugar, substituting it with boiled chicken breasts, vegetables, and healthy diet meals. He had never been that skinny in his life.

The drama starring Kristal Tin (田蕊妮), Johnson Lee (李思捷), and Raymond Cho (曹永廉) premiered August 19th. It follows the journey of a middled-aged woman who is on the brink of divorce with her husband. As she navigates through this new stage in her life, she learns what it takes to feel young, accomplished, and present.

Joey Law plays the owner of a fitness gym that Kristal works at. Aside from his passionate kiss with Claire Yiu (姚嘉妮) as being one of his memorable scenes, the scene with Kristal yelling at him was also very unforgettable.

“I’d consider it a breakthrough,” he said. “[Kristal] just attracts you to watch her. When I’m doing a scene with her, I’d suddenly stop with whatever I was doing to watch her, becoming part of the audience. I’d just jump out of my character. That’s why it’s hard to work with her, because she’s just that good.”

The 31-year-old, who made his debut in the industry through the 2008 Mr. Hong Kong competition, has had a controversial career. Joey did not take his career seriously and had no goals in life. His very public relationships with several TVB starlets had negatively impacted his career progress.

Joey reflected a lot during the two years he was without a job after completing Come Home Love <·回家>. “Just when I was thinking that I should stop waiting, the producer of Life on the Line <跳躍生命線> reached out to me. Just when the light was getting dimmer and dimmer, the fog subsided. It was such a good role, so I had to do it justice.”

Producer Dave Fong (方駿釗) isn’t the only person Joey didn’t want to upset. He revealed that his mother, Barbi, had always wanted him to do well in his career, because he managed to do something that she couldn’t.

“My mother actually did get in TVB’s artiste training academy, but she dropped out halfway. That’s why I want to help her fulfill this celebrity dream of hers. She would always tell me that I have to work harder. She doesn’t want to die before I get famous.”

Although Joey has already broken up with Roxanne Tong (湯洛雯), the media still links them together. “That can’t be avoided,” he admitted. “However, the two of us are still friends. It’s a pity that we couldn’t be together til the end.” Asking if he’s prepared for a new relationship, he admitted, “I’m not ready yet. I don’t want to date randomly. I also don’t have the heart and time to start a new relationship at the moment.”
