“Return of the Silver Tongue” Ratings Trump “Coffee Cat Mama”

TVB dramas Return of the Silver Tongue <舌劍上的公堂> and Coffee Cat Mama <貓屎媽媽> both received less-than-stellar ratings reports last week. Both comedy dramas aired their finale episodes on Friday, January 17, and achieved only an average of 27 points for the episodes. However, Return of the Silver Tongue managed to accomplish a peak rating of 31 points – drawing in 1.99 million viewers – while Coffee Cat Mama only reached a peak rating of 28 points.

Averaging 25 points per episode, Return of the Silver Tongue barely defeated Coffee Cat Mama, which attained an average of 24 points per episode during its broadcast run. Both dramas aired in December, a period of historically low ratings points due to locals travelling for the year-end holidays.

On the other hand, TVB’s JSG Music Awards, which was held on Sunday, January 19, saw an increase of two viewership points compared to last year’s show, reaching an average of 21 points and a peak of 24 points. Last year’s award ceremony only managed to attain an average of 19 points.

The Hong Kong Broadcasting Authority received one complaint about the bad camera angles during the JSG Music Awards. The popular sitcom Come Home Love <愛·回家> received two complaints about the series’ unoriginal and unrealistic storylines, with its content being “too obviously educational.”

Return of the Silver Tongue received five complaints, which pointed out the series’ unrealistic themes. Some also complained about the drama having too much romance, too much coarse language, and poor casting choices.

However, two viewers sent in letters of praise to the Broadcasting Authority in regards to TVB’s informative program Guardians of Life <守護生命的故事>, hosted by Lawrence Ng (吳啟華), praising the series’ informative and educational content. The viewers also professed their hope for TVB to produce a sequel.

  1. But Coffee Cat Mama’s seems to have better appreciation from audiences not just in HK, but also mainland China and southeast Asia, based on weibo and twitter fandoms for the drama and characters :D. I have lost count of how many fan arts spawned out for such a short and light drama, mainly for Tai Chi Pau vs Fan Fat followed by Yam Ka Ching vs So Mei. The article also forgot to mention that Coffee Cat Mama’s finale has been pushed half an hour late in favor of Return of Silver Tongue.

    1. you must be kidding. what fans and what audience??? my grandma and aunt said coffee cat is boring and silver tongue more interesting and eventful! eliza sucks!

      1. Oh, so your grandma and aunt (2 people) are the only fans and audience in the world? I see I see. No doubt why your views are so weird.

      2. your grandma and aunt doesn’t represent all the audience~~

      3. You didn’t even watch the series, don’t go judging who sucks and who didn’t.

      4. Agree with you. Coffee CatMama is boring. I gave it a miss. Poor acting. Whereas Return of Silver Tongue has better storyline and acting.

      5. Agreed! Eliza Sam shouldn’t be leading. She acts the same in all of her roles. IMO she annoyed me with her buck tooth smiles trying to act cute and innocent. Not buying the act.

      6. @selfiewu

how would you react if they replaced bosco and eliza with kenneth and myolie?

‘om this is the best drama ever’ ?

    2. i enjoyed Coffee Cat Mama (although i dislike the title, nor do i understand it). It is light hearted, funny and i like the actor/actresses in it.
      Very entertaining.

    1. That’s because they broadcasted during Christmas-New Year time period. Missing You (last year’s drama) also broadcasted around this time period as well, and only had occasional peaks, but avg points for them is also 26-28.

So it’s pretty normal for a tvb series that aired during this time frame! And during this time period, most students are in school. So, the majority of the people who are watching are either see-lais or parents. And most people are leaning towards online tv such as Netflix, etc. So it will decrease well. But then there are those dramas that are exceptional to this observation as well.

I wasn’t able to watch tvb series when I had school. It was only until SUMMER where I was able to. That’s why dramas that air during the summer or holiday season have MORE views, which means rating points are higher.

I guess, my main message is that there are so many causes of why rating points would be low/high depending on when the drama airs as well as the interest.

    2. silver tongue isn’ t bad! jonathan kristal and akina shines! however roger is boring and priscilla is bad

      1. Why do you only focus on the cast? There is way more to deny series than just the cast.

      2. Priscillia is just horrible overall. Without connections, she’s probably one of those maids serving tea in the background.. aka 茄喱啡

      3. Priscilla has never landed a supporting role once she entered TVB, and it’s not because of her skills. Personal affairs saves the day in the end, welcome to TVB.

      4. Priscillia always get main lead or 1st supporting cast but she really bad. But just really friendly with high staffs.

  2. honestly, this isn’t surprising. These past few years, the creativity of tvb dramas are going downhill. Even if tvb brings back old artists, it can only reach the borderline of 30 pts.

    1. i think there is a permanent lack of good directors and scripwriters in tvb,if there is talent they wouldnt go to tvb anymore because of tvb’s policy that will undermine the creativity of any good talent, also the low payment doesnt work in their favour.they prefer mainland or movieworld above tvb i think.

  3. Its the new normal… no more 30 point ratings. Go figure.

    1. Yup…the ratings bar has definitely been lowered. I was just reading an article where Angela Tong was saying that she would wear a bikini if her new series managed to garner 25 points…honestly, that’s way sad! It used to be that the actors/actresses made those kinds of promises if the ratings hit like 40 points or even 35 points…now, they are happy if they even get 25 points? Wow….

      1. The times have definitely changed so the ratings bar has also been changed….

  4. i enjoyed watching CCM! I only watched 3eps of Silver Tongue and i find it boring lol

  5. Surprisingly I enjoyed the Coffee series the other one was just boring despite the cast. Many ppl actually preferred the Coffe Cat series compared to the other one, the humor wasn’t as cheesy.

    1. agree~~ the story of coffee cat mama might be simple…but some of the scenes are really heart warming….

      1. yes, i agree too….. story line is simple but heart warming.

  6. i honestly thought both series were boring, but silver tongue did occasionally hold my attention.. but sorry, the leads in each series are just not appealing to me. i like eliza, but there’s only so much i can take of her before i start to get frustrated by her accent and robotic delivery (probably trying too hard to remember her lines).

    1. I must say that picking the wrong female heroines to be promoted also contributes to success factor of a series. Nowadays we are seeing Eliza Sum, Priscilla Wu and Aimee Chan hailed as the lead when they’re still not ready. How can it not be boring to watch a bad heroine? TVB need to find a successor the Ada and Esther’s generation fast because honestly the current fadans are lacking and that takes away the enjoyment of a series. My only link to watch TVB now is Ruco’s stellar acting and handsome looks.

      1. i dislike Outbound Love so far, it is totally painful to watch the show, all of them including Ruco. He is normally a great actor but here i find him a miscast.

and the girls are just painful to watch

      2. To me, the most painful to watch are the Malaysian actors and actresses (sorry, nothing personal against Malaysians), all so stiff and unnatural, esp those 2 fighting over Ruco were really gawd awful >.<, all i can say of their acting is "alamak, cannot make it la! better go home and tidor!".

      3. aimee, no need to mention, cringeworthy as always. Lin Xia wei is bad but compared to aimee is much better and more convincing as some kind of air-head. Shld change all the actresses! Awful bunch all including Elaine Yiu, Vivienne yeo, all the actresses i dislike in one drama! The only saving grace is Ruco but he has too little screen time so far.

      4. Ruco is a very good actor if not the best in tvb but he always get pair with not so good actresses. Like Linda Chung and now Aimee just to name a few. Argot frustrated. They ruin the whole series.

  7. I think the problem with Return of the Silver Tongue was that the cases were too draggy, but the main plot about the robbery which happened 2 decades ago was pretty smart. Also, not much was focused on Kristal and Roger, it was as if 荒唐镜 and 陈梦吉 were the main characters instead. And the romance part escalated quite quickly. All along Kristal had a feeling for Evergreen but like in just a few days she liked Roger. And the relationship among Priscilla, Fred and the 樊更 was quite ambiguous. I thought Priscilla would end up with Fred because 樊更 was presumed dead, and at the last few minutes then they reunited. Feels draggy but rushy too.

    1. (BE CAREFUL OF BAD GRAMMAR)i reckon the story line is creative and pretty good compare to the previous series tvb produce .
People in hk are just to picky and dont want to understand the drama. This is why hong Kong entrainment industry is dying . You may say everyone will love HKTV drama but it basically the same thing as tvb.

  8. I loved coffee cat mama! Havent seen a comedy for a long while that really make me LOL!!!

Bosco really does well in comedies..

It was one of those shows which i hope didnt end so soon.. Return of the silver tongue, i didnt make
    It past 3 episodes..

Am watching the nancy sit show now, liking the cat fights between joyce and angela so far!

  9. I personally like both dramas. But I think one of the reasons is that TV viewership as a whole is decreasing. TV is no longer the main entertainment. Many people don’t watch live TV anymore. They would rather record it or watch on the internet on MyTV. People’s lifestyle changes as there are more entertainment these days, especially in HK where the city never sleeps. When I was in HK, I was reminded that there are still tons of people on the streets. People shopping, dining or just hanging out. It’s not like back 20 to 30 years ago where people just go home and watch TV. Nowadays with the internet, it leaves people a lot of options of when they watch their shows. Why restrict yourself to watching something at a certain thing when you can watch it commercial-free at a later time? So. I don’t think it is accurate anymore to just look at TV viewship anymore.

    1. Totally agree. I have also mentioned similar contents in my previous posts.

  10. I am watching both and found them to be very different from one another! Well, with the exception of Jonathon Cheung 🙂 Since they are so different from one another, I imagine they might attract different viewership. I like both because I tend to watch most things out of boredom rather than with a critical eye – but I guess not all viewers are like me.

As far as main male leads, I like Roger more than Bosco; female supporting cast in Coffee Cat is better than in Silver tongue , however. I loved seeing Akina again – I wish I could see her more.

  11. Why are people criticizing Priscilia for her acting skill and praise Eliza when they are both equally underserving of the roles they get. One person also said “go to hotel get the lead role”?

  12. I personally think Priscilia look is really different and Eliza is overrated . Her face is too round and her teeth are too big making her look like she got rabbits teeth. IMO

  13. Both are boring. The rating is bad for both … it’s like 29 vs 24 …

  14. The Dramas that Tvb has been producing these few years is really not comparable to what they used to produce. Return of the silver tongue didn’t feel as intense as old Tvb dramas, the acting wasn’t the best either. Most of the dramas that Tvb is producing feels rushed. It just doesn’t have that feeling yenno? Tvb is letting too many newbies take leading roles. Eliza Sam’s acting and cantonese isn’t good enough to get a leading role. They’re trying to promote her way too hard and it’s backfiring.
I almost forgot Roger Kwok was in return of the silver tongue.
Old Dramas like Triumph in the skies, Dicey business, A step into the past, A pillow case of mystery was intense enough to make me feel like i was in the drama itself

    1. But eliza sam will get better in acting of the lead
They just want to see if she is ok of leading of the tv episode I think she will do it better because she will improve more and she tried her best effort to speak cantonese &she getting a bit better in cantonese
      Keep it up ELIZA SAM

  15. both dramas was boring for me. but I watched silver tongue for the cast over coffee mamas. Eliza’s acting=/

  16. Both series are average to terrible 😀 TVB is really very super struggling to write excellent plot, poor and crap scriptwriter!

  17. I feel sorry for TVB. If the very same dramas from the 90s that people are praising today came out in 2014, we’d get the very same complaints of having “unrealistic storylines” and being “unoriginal”. The fact is that people are just too picky and will find any reason to complain. TVB sticks to something that works and it’s “unoriginal”. They try something new and HKers don’t want to have to think about the story and it becomes too “confusing”. What can they do to please people?

  18. I just loved those shows but the spritwriter
Wroted it and then the coffee cat mama on the beggining of the show is just totally boring but then until the show was quite good not bad 🙂
