Wong Jing’s “Night Beauties” Skirts Back to Hong Kong’s Red Light District in the 1980s

Produced by  Wong Jing (王晶), Night Beauties <一舞傾城> may be TVB’s raciest drama in a long time. Revolving around the lives of those working in the glittering night club scene in the 80s, the series stars Monica Chan (陳法蓉), Elaine Yiu (姚子羚), Jacky Cai (蔡潔), Michael Tong (唐文龍) and Mat Yeung (楊明).

The drama has been touted as the Hong Kong version of Ruby Lin’s (林心如) 2021 drama, Light the Night <華燈初上>. In addition to appealing to the audience’s nostalgia to the 80s, Night Beauties also entice with its exploration of sisterly bonds and scintillating subject matter.

Although the overall reception has been favorable, the drama has also been criticized for sending a bad message. In one scene, a mother persuades her daughter to work as a night club escort, while the first few episodes explore borderline taboo and touchy subjects, such as rape and several bed scenes.

  1. It wouldn’t be a Wong Jing production if there are no racy elements; it’s his emblematic signature at this point (this ham sap lo.)
The first few episodes are okay, some of the newer actresses feel stiff, but the writing has some heart. There are some excessive displays of s3xual innuendos which are just so gag, but again, it’s wong jing we’re talking about.
I think I’ll continue watching – it’s not that bad, and monica is a great focal point. I also like Jacky Cai (Ali look-alike.) Fills up my time in between waiting on Back from the Brink (horrible ML, but otherwise not too bad.)

    1. So on point. The show is so low and dirty but people buy it. The story line is so typical Wong jing and definate villain and good people which is so dumb.
