Sean Lau, Nick Cheung, Louis Koo Face Life-or-Death Showdown in “The White Storm”

The White Storm <掃毒>, an upcoming crime thriller that follows three cops as they attempt to rout the forces of an infamous drug lord, recently unveiled its newest trailer. The film, which stars Sean Lau (劉青雲), Nick Cheung (張家輝), and Louis Koo (古天樂), is expected to open in theaters in December.

In The White Storm, Louis Koo plays an undercover police officer sent to the Golden Triangle, one of Asia’s main opium-producing areas, in order to learn more about a drug lord known as the Eight-faced Buddha. He joins forces with Sean Lau and Nick Cheung, who have been sent to arrest the criminal, but clashes with them over the best way to capture him. Ultimately, they must find a way to negotiate their differences as they find themselves in a life-or-death showdown with the Eight-faced Buddha himself.

The newest trailer shows off the many action scenes that one would expect from a crime thriller like The White Storm. Gunfights, explosions, and car crashes abound, and helicopters are shown mercilessly machine-gunning fleeing victims below. One scene even depicts Louis dangling off the front of a car, which itself is parked on the brink of a building roof. The trailer builds to the climax, in which Sean holds the Eight-faced Buddha’s daughter hostage in exchange for the safety of his two colleagues.

Although The White Storm may show all the markings of a typical crime thriller, director Benny Chan (陳木勝) shared that the film differs from similarly themed movies in two ways: “First, this is the first time the Hong Kong police have burst into the Golden Triangle, making it a large-scale, transnational drug enforcement operation that has rarely been seen in history.

“Second, the target of The White Storm is not a drug dealer or a narcotics gang, but the Eight-faced Buddha, who is the main drug dealer in all of the Golden Triangle. He has his own independent military, so this time, Sean Lau, Nick Cheung, and Louis Koo will be facing an entire army. This is what total annihilation really is.”

  1. How could any actor improve/be different if they face the same co-star over and over again?

    1. I wanted to say the same thing … i’m so bored of this.

Even if the movie was excellent, i wouldn’t care …

    2. haha,i cant agree more with you. johnny to,louis ko and sean lau are the three musketeers. brotherhood love i think?

    1. LeUna,
Francis Ng’s prominence in HK films in recent years appears to be sliding. I can’t recall the last notable film he made, aside from the Laughing Gor inspired film, “Turning Point”.

Although a good actor, Francis may not be able to pull in the box office sales, a reason that he has disappeared from the biggest HK films which star mainly Andy Lau, Nick Cheung, Louis Koo, Nicholas Tse, and Sean Lau instead.

      1. Jayne,
I wonder if that is why is coming back to filming series now?? That is not a big deal or necessarily a bad thing since I have noticed that many of the veteran movie stars have come back to filming series. It is great to see them in series since I hardly ever watch Asian movies because I have not seen a single one that I really like yet.

      2. HeTieShou,
There’s good money to be made in mainland China. After the popularity of “Triumph in the Skies 2”, Francis’ popularity in mainland China shot up again, so he’s filming a series there right now.

      1. exactly 😉

But the serious answer: the trailer it self is really breathtaking. Of course having Louis Koo and not to forget Sean Lau in it are great selling points too. ^_^

  2. “Although The White Storm may show all the markings of a typical crime thriller, director Benny Chan (陳木勝) shared that the film differs …

Should say ‘amplify’ instead of ‘differs’. He just upped the scale of everything. Bigger coverage area, bigger crime boss, more action.

    1. I agreed that the word “amplify” is a better description of the trailer.

I like all of these three guys. Great actors. Don’t mind that it’s another triad/druglord vs. cops movie. This is the genre HK cinema are great at and excel in; good fun and entertaining, and great at highlighting the bromance. May be a HK movie that I’m looking forward to see after so many years.

  3. If they can turn this into a gritty bromance melodrama of the highest order harkening back to the best of John Woo, i wouldn’t mind.

The setting itself does land to a Bullet in the Head sort of thriller. Hoping one of the three will turn out to be a traitor.

That will be all melodramas and cliches in the right places then 🙂

  4. OMG Louis Koo. goddamn he is still smoking after all these years<33 still lang zai 🙂

  5. DECEMBER yeah the month of the fight of all stars… Sean Lau “the white storm” , Donnie yen “special id” , Andy Lau “firestorm” ….. mmmm
