This year’s FIFA World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, held its opening ceremonies one after another. The biggest highlight was the U.S. opening ceremony, featuring performances by American pop queen Katy Perry and Lisa of the Korean girl group BLACKPINK.

At the Canadian opening ceremony, Canadian jazz superstar Michael Bublé and Canadian diva Alanis Morissette led the performance line-up. A giant inflatable prop of the FIFA World Cup Trophy placed at the center of the stage suddenly appeared to deflate, instantly becoming an international joke.

The highly anticipated U.S. opening ceremony saw American rapper Future and South African singer Tyla kick off the show, followed by Lisa, who appeared on stage alongside Brazilian superstar Anitta and Nigerian singer Rema to perform this year’s official World Cup song, “GOALS”. Dressed in a sexy all-white outfit, Lisa danced energetically with a troupe of dancers, drawing cheers and applause from the football fans in attendance.

American pop diva Katy Perry then took the stage for the finale, performing her hit song “Wonder” hand in hand with 10-year-old Norwegian singing prodigy Tius. After the performance, Katy showed her maternal side by carrying the young singer as they took their final bow.

However, some pointed out how Katy Perry’s metallic “tin foil” outfit resembled chocolate-wrapper foil, while Lisa’s performance was similarly met with backlash, with netizens claiming that Korean netizens had criticized the opening ceremony song she performed as “vulgar”, arguing that its lyrics were filled with references to wealth flaunting and body display. They also described the stage style as resembling a nightclub performance, calling it “cheap and low-class”.

In response, many Lisa fans expressed dissatisfaction and pushed back against the criticism. They argued that whenever Lisa takes part in a major international performance, similar headlines such as “Korean netizens furious” or “Koreans shocked” tend to surface. However, upon closer checking, these claims often appear to lack full context or specific sources, leading fans to suspect that some netizens may be fabricating the controversy.
