Winki Lai Romances Aska Cheung in “The Unusual Prosecutors”
Legal-investigation drama The Unusual Prosecutors <非常檢控觀> has been delivering solid ratings and positive word of mouth since its premiere. Among the show’s “iron triangle,” actress and mother-of-two Winki Lai (賴慰玲) plays a legal secretary and has quickly become known as the drama’s “leggy goddess,” while also sparking an onscreen noona romance with young heartthrob Aska Cheung (張馳豪)!
Showing Off Her Legs and Playing a Varsity Student
In The Unusual Prosecutors, the trio works together to uncover the truth for victims. As the only female member of the team, Lai brings both intelligence and feminine charm to her role. “I play a secretary, so what I contribute is brainpower — asking sharp, incisive questions,” she explained. “The drama actually feels very much like a crime-investigation series,”
One case in particular sees her investigating a crime on a university campus, a storyline she especially enjoyed. “I’m so youthful and cute — of course I’d be the university student!” she laughed. “In one case, I return to campus to study and notice that many students are taking the same thing, something called ‘smart drugs.’ I have to find out why it ended up costing someone their life. Every character is involved in each case, so the investigation becomes even more gripping.”
In addition to playing a student, Lai also gets her first taste of a noona (older woman–younger man) romance — something she thoroughly enjoyed. “The most memorable part was definitely playing a university student, haha! We filmed this drama two or three years ago, when I was still a mother of one, so it felt easier. Now that I have two kids, I’d need to pluck up a bit more courage to do it again. In the show, I meet Aska on campus and there’s a romantic storyline — it’s my first time trying a noona romance.”
Breaking the Ice with “Little Fresh Meat” actor Aska Cheung
Offscreen, Lai found the young actor shy and endearing, prompting her to take the initiative to break the ice. “We didn’t know each other at first, and I kept wondering why he was so shy. I remember one day after filming on location, I asked him to give me a lift so we could buy takeaway and eat back at the office. He was so nervous! I told him, ‘Don’t be scared, we’re just buying food.’ He was shy throughout the process, but step by step he opened up, and we talked about many things. Now he’s a really good friend of mine.”
Known as one of TVB’s dependable acting talents, the versatile actress has noticeably had fewer projects in recent years due to personal commitments. She explained that she turned down one drama during pregnancy and another during confinement. “Overall, there have been fewer productions in the industry…If there’s a production, I rarely say no,” On passers-by’s observation that it “feels like she hasn’t been filming much lately”, Winki added that she still hope to take on more and different kinds of projects.
Lifelong Sisterhood with M Club Soulmates
Offscreen, she has been equally busy — now a mother of two, she is surrounded by a close-knit circle of good friends from M Club <女人俱樂部>, through which she entered the television industry. Looking back, she says it all happened naturally. “I was just like anyone else — after graduating, I worked in theatre. Then one day, May Law (羅冠蘭) called and said TVB was holding open auditions for a drama called M Club. Many of my classmates went. If you got picked, you’d do the show. I originally planned to leave after finishing that one drama! But after filming, a producer asked, ‘Do you want to do another one?’
The series not only set her on her acting path but also gave her a group of lifelong friends. She recently recalled an emotional moment involving her younger son, “It’s love — truly love. At our last gathering, I asked if we could also help plan a birthday party for my younger son. I felt like I hadn’t been paying him enough attention, and I suddenly burst into tears. I felt I hadn’t tried hard enough with him — when my eldest was born, I did so much more. I just started crying. They said, ‘Are you silly? Who doesn’t adore him? Let’s do it right away!’”
The result was a joyful and perfect celebration. “They helped me with everything…it’s never just about having a meal together. They love my children as an extension of loving me — both my sons are deeply cherished by them. We’re very open with each other, with no pretense. We even show our most ‘unglam’ sides. It’s honest, and it feels incredibly comfortable,”
Having started her career with numerous stage productions, Winki still holds a deep affection for the theatre. Looking ahead, in addition to television work, she hopes to return to the stage. “I still miss the stage terribly, and I believe that in the not-too-distant future, I’ll definitely do theatre again.”
