Owen Cheung and Wayne Lai Step into the Boxing Ring in “The Ringmaster”

TVB’s Anniversary drama The Ringmaster starring Owen Cheung (張振朗), Wayne Lai (黎耀祥), Elaine Yiu (姚子羚), Winki Lai (賴慰玲), Jacky Cai (蔡潔) and Brian Chu (朱敏瀚) aims to impress viewers with its plot themed around competitive boxing and Muay Thai.

In the drama, Owen’s character is grief-stricken after his brother died in a boxing match under the mentorship of Wayne’s character. To avenge his brother, Owen vows to step into the boxing ring and become the next champion. In order to prepare for the role, Owen and Wayne went through intensive training and worked with renowned martial art experts, Sing Ling Wo (冼林沃) and Sin Ho Ying (冼灝英).

Wayne Faced Intensive Trainings

While Owen made headlines for his dramatic transformation, 57-year-old Wayne was also praised for his dedication to his character. Wayne painstakingly trained until he achieved a toned body but, in the process, the actor’s knee suffered from inflamed swelling pain.

Recalling details about his training, Wayne said, “I trained too hard. Muay Thai is an intensive form of exercise and I would be sweating everywhere after practice. I would be in the ring for one minute, and I would need to catch my breath. I had to control my diet too. Whenever I took my shirt off, I had to get in shape.”

Wayne’s Character in a Love Triangle with Elaine and Elaine

Beyond boxing, Wayne will be getting in touch with his romantic side as the plot explores his relationship with Elaine and Winki’s characters.

Describing her character, Elaine shared, “My character has a frenemy-like relationship with Wayne. Our relationship is ambiguous, so it was difficult to use my facial expressions to communicate different scenes. On the surface, I am very tough but in front of my love interest, I revert to my real self and become a bit more girly.”

Meanwhile, Winki laughed that she has levelled up from playing as Wayne’s daughter five years ago to now playing his love interest. In the drama, Winki plays a witty anchor and will have several emotionally heavy scenes.

Brian Competes with Owen

Playing a boxer, Brian’s friendship with Owen will be put to a test as he gets stuck in between Owen and Wayne’s feud. To make matters worse, Brian and Owen fall for the same love interest played by Jacky.

Sharing details about his role, Brian said, “Owen wants to avenge his brother but his target is my father played by Wayne. I got sandwiched in between and had to choose a side. In the end, I chose a family, so Owen and I will battle it out.”

  1. Watched first four episodes so far but Owen Cheung looked very emotionless, rigid, and stiff. A big downgrade in term of quality from his role in Legal Mavericks. Wish to see more Muay Thai fights, less love drama, especially triangle love on the older casts, they are so bad and cringey lol.

  2. The story’s got flow and the relationship set up is pretty good so far.
Wayne looks older but his acting is literally the best in the last decade.
I’m waiting for a breakthrough moment from Owen…. If this role has good character development then I don’t see why he can’t win BA, since there’s zero hype from other actors.
