Chilam Cheung’s “Captain Cool” is Unstoppable

“Captain Cool” of Triumph in the Skies 2 <衝上雲宵II> is not the only iconic role in Chilam Cheung’s (張智霖) television career, but his image as the Casanova pilot left a lasting impression on many viewers. Though Dayo Wong (黃子華) defeated Chilam for Best Actor at the TVB Anniversary Awards last year, Chilam won the recognition and approval of the Hong Kong audiences with his landslide win for Most Popular TV Male Character – an award based completely on popular vote.

Though it has been over a year since the broadcast of Triumph in the Skies 2, Chilam finds that he is still profiting from the role of Captain Cool. Not only has this role boosted his movie opportunities, Chilam’s appearance fees also shot up dramatically. “It was a valuable opportunity to be able to play Captain Cool,” said Chilam. “Because of the role’s popularity and image, I was offered many endorsements.  Even now, the functions I’m invited to attend all revolve around my image as Captain Cool. Being able to play a role that is so appreciative by the masses is really a fortune that is hard to come by.”

The film version of the award-winning TVB drama, which will be a co-production between TVB and Shaw Brothers’-owned Concept Legend Limited and Media Asia Entertainment, will begin principal photography this August. Starring Chilam, Francis Ng (吳鎮宇), and new addition Louis Koo (古天樂), TVB is drumming up anticipation for the movie.

Teases Fans About Upcoming Concert

Chilam will be holding his Hong Kong Coliseum concert, Chilam Crazy Hours Live, in July, and fans are buzzing about the possibility of seeing Chilam reprise his “Captain Cool” image at the concert. Last December, Chilam made a surprise appearance at Louis Yuen’s (阮兆祥) concert and performed “Years Like a Song” <歲月如歌>, theme song to Triumph in the Skies, with Louis while wearing a custom-maid pilot suit.

As for whether or not he will bring his Captain Cool image to his own concert, Chilam teased, “There will be a segment in the concert where I will sing TVB theme songs. I will definitely sing ‘Wishing Kwan Well’ <祝君好> [theme song to Return of the Cuckoo <十月初五的月光>]. As for the other songs, I hope they will be ones that the audience will be able to recognize. I want to keep it a surprise. I will consider all possibilities.” Chilam has also been working with famous Belgium fashion designer, Ann Demeulemeester, for his concert attire.

During his 2011 concert, Chilam stripped off his shirt to flash his toned abs. Asked if he will do a similar act for his upcoming concert, he said, “I’ve been working with a trainer. I don’t think being buff is suitable for me, but my target is to train my body to look good.”

both are not cool as they are not so toned. I prefer a bit of muscles here and there to be really cool. But character wise, Chilam is cooler…

I hope the movie version will steer clear of anything that may remind viewers of the painful memory of MH370 tragedy.

I don’t think Chilam is cool as a Captain. Dislike his acting in the Triumph of Skies 2. Captain Cool acting is seem look like he feel proud of himself. Prefer Captain Tong is the BEST & BETTER as a Captain. Captain Tong acting is so natural and smart, I admired him and he’s my all time favourite actor!

Yes! The captain that impressed me is Captain Tong. Just looking at the character personality and charisma, I also prefer Sam Gor to Cool Mo.
But the audience seem to like the Casanova type more.
