Johnson Lee’s “Office of Practical Jokes” Receives High Ratings

Since the initial broadcast of new comedy reality show, Office of Practical Jokes <玩嘢王>, ratings have been very positive, with episode two hitting 20 points and episode three peaking at 23 points. It currently holds the number one spot on myTV’s popularity board for their Saturday time slot with over 420,000 visits.

In every episode, Johnson Lee (李思捷) will lead his team of Johnson Soldiers to carefully conjure up pranks for various artists. Johnson invited artists Sire Ma (馬賽) and Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣) and professionals from different fields, such as feng shui master Mak Lingling (麥玲玲), as guest stars for each episode. The producer, Edgar Wong (黃中濠) explained that inviting experts to the show increases the credibility of the prank and also provides more professional advice.

Intense Rehearsals

Edgar explained that the show’s success has to do with how seriously the crew rehearses before each broadcast. “It’s similar to filming a drama, everyone has to be ready with their scripts memorized. We also want to estimate the reaction of the person we’re pranking on, so we use a double during rehearsal. For example, to practice for the first episode, we had someone wear a mask of Bob Lam (林盛斌) and pretend to be him.”

Since it is difficult to estimate the guest’s reaction, the ability to improvise on the spot is crucial. Johnson received praises from the producer as someone who can quickly think on his feet.

Bob Lam: First Victim of the Show

Bob was the MC of a wedding ceremony when Johnson and his squad launched the prank. Not only was Bob surprised, but he had to improvise and act natural as possible. Afterwards, many applauded Bob’s ability to take control of the situation and continued emceeing the wedding as if nothing was awry.

Bob laughed, “More people want me as a host now! I received many wonderful comments on Facebook and some even asked me to help them out with birthday parties and weddings. But now, I’ll have to watch my back in case I get pranked again!”

Linda Chung’s Tears Fool Everyone

Linda Chung guest starred in the third episode of Office of Practical Jokes. Throughout the episode, Linda cried and fooled viewers as they thought she was the victim of the pranks. When Johnson Lee failed at performing a magic trick and vomited blood, Linda’s tears rolled and she shouted that Johnson was her boyfriend, scaring the magician, Louis Yan, on the set. It was later revealed that Linda and Johnson had partnered together to pull a prank on Louis.

Linda’s ability to shed convincing tears live on the spot earned praises for her acting. Others commented that Linda was very frightening, as it was difficult to differentiate her acting skills from her real self. Linda said that she was often the victim of pranks for many years and it was the first time that she succeeded in fooling the entire audience.
