Hong Kong Looking to Adapt Korea’s “You Who Came from the Stars”

According to Taiwanese media reports, Hong Kong’s Media Asia Entertainment is interested in making a movie version of the hit South Korean SBS television series, You Who Came from the Stars <來自星星的你>. Currently one of the most popular foreign drama series airing in China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, the sci-fi romantic comedy drama, which stars Gianna Jun and Kim Soo Hyun, drew in over 800 million online viewers on official Chinese video-sharing websites. The 21-episode series is also a big hit in its native Korea, with television ratings peaking at 30 percent. You Who Came from the Stars premiered on Korea’s SBS channel on December 18, 2013, and is set to air its finale on February 27, 2014.

Sources say that many Chinese, Taiwanese, and Hong Kong television stations attempted to purchase the rights to adapt You Who Came from the Stars to their own versions, but SBS declined, revealing their plans on adapting the series into their own feature film. Wanting to target the Chinese-language market, it was reported that SBS was looking for a Chinese production company to co-produce the film, and Hong Kong’s Media Asia immediately responded to the call. The two companies have reportedly been negotiating the film’s rights since as early as when the series was airing its fifth episode in early January 2014.

Media Asia is one of the largest Chinese-language film studios, producing successful films such as Infernal Affairs <無間道> and A World Without Thieves <天下無賊>. Media Asia admitted, “We’re definitely interested in making a film version of You Who Came from the Stars. We want to purchase the rights to adapt it. As for the female lead, we’ll talk about it if we are able to purchase the rights. We hope to collaborate with Korea, but for now it is still too early to say anything.”

Rumors surfaced claiming that Media Asia was looking into casting Taiwan’s Shu Qi (舒淇) and mainland China’s Huang Xiaoming (黃曉明) as the lead stars in the Chinese-language adaptation. Changing the story’s setting from ancient Korea to ancient China, the film is expected to begin production at the end of the year. SBS, however, reportedly wanted to bring back Gianna Jun to star instead. Gianna Jun has yet to respond to the casting reports.

In regards to Huang Xiaoming’s involvement, his manager replied with a laugh and declined to comment further. Shu Qi’s manager has not given a reply.

Taiwanese actors Mark Chao (趙又廷) and Kai Ko (柯震東) have also been considered.

  1. well, at least Huang Xiaoming is better looking than Kim Soo Hyun. my biggest problem w/ the show is that the male lead was suppose to have perfect physique. Kim Soo Hyun is not hot enough. there are much hotter korean boys.

    1. There’s an American series currently running at the moment titled, Star-Crossed, also about an alien dude coming to Earth. You might want to check it out.

      1. yeh i know. i wonder if it is the same story. it’s a new series.

      2. I can’t say cuz I am slowly dwnloading the kdrama and will watch it after it is done airing. But I am watching Star-Crossed.

      3. I’m watching star crossed, too. ATM, it’s a bit hard to comment on how good/how bad it is, but it’s something new other than vampire or crime stuff =_= though star cross is more about a race trying to mix in with human, not just 1 dude. It’s just so happen that if this one love success, it will help the 2 races mix better with each other. Or… At least that’s what I hope it will be instead of just lovey dovey lol

      4. You described it perfectly fishy, I missed the details.Btw,episode 2 is out today

    2. Kim Soo Hyun is hot lol, if you compare to normal korean men. His just short and has a bad personality.

      1. What bad personality?

I don’t find him handsome.. LOL actually Korean men not my cup of tea. I’m afraid he more pretty than me :p

Manly and simple man is the most attractive!!

      2. I was born in the year of the dragon and people say I have bad personality because I am eccentric, passionate and stubborn. I share the same traits with Kim Soo Hyun and we never care what others’ think because they dont know what’s going on in our mind. However, we are always achievers!

      3. How do you any of you know he has a bad personality? Even people that you have known personally for years, you do not know for sure if they have a bad personality or not, so how can you judge someone that you do not even know?

        @marianne,
You actually believe in that zodiac stuff? It is ok for fun and trivia but none of us should take it too seriously.

    3. You are alone with your opinion that Kim Soo Hyun is not hot enough. He is the reason why the drama is hitting skyrocket and he has the special charisma that he and him only possess. I doubt it that the drama would be that populat if not with Kim Soo Hyun. Suck it up!

      1. His a good marketing tool but he hasn’t improved at acting at all. Only Gianna Jun playing CSY is getting the recognition on what this drama deserves.

Overall this is a pretty much overrated drama based on a simple plot line.

      2. agree with Ren. I think his acting is medicore and boring to watch lol. Although he is not good looking, he does have a unique charisma in him. Gianna Jun is the reason why I am watching the drama. Overall, the drama is boring lol nothing interesting or new.

  2. It would be great to see Shu Qi & the actor working together on screen.

  3. I see Fan bing bing a good fit for the female lead. Rumor has it that they’re considering Joe Chen as well. I’m excited to see all this come true even tho I’m not nearly as addicted to this series as the rest of the nation are. I find it quite boring to be honest.

    1. Will keep your opinion in mind, as I find myself don’t have the same taste as their national rating, they rate my fav drama quite low, and high rating on drama I found uninteresting.

Since it garners so much talk, I guess it should give it a try. Saw the trailer and wasn’t interested when it was first airing.

      1. I supposed it’s a good drama… I guess? But I’m just not understanding why it’s so hyped about. The plot is quite interesting and refreshing compared to the typical Korean dramas. The only thing I enjoyed about the drama is the leading female actress. Her character is hilarious and it’s entertaining to watch.

  4. Please, no. First of all, Huang Xiaoming’s acting is not good enough. I like him, but his looks won’t be able to carry him in a remake of this series. No one will ever be able to be a better Cheong Songyi than Jeon Jihyun, but I’d like to see someone try. LOL. Probably not the best idea to remake a drama that is mostly a hit, because it’s most likely going to be butchered in the remake. This isn’t like “The Heirs” where a good amount of people completely disliked the drama. And frankly I am just tired of remakes.

    1. I’m too tired of remakes -.- each time, they do a remake, I went and watch the original lol :p

      1. I am tired of any remake. Are they all seriously out of ideas?i miss the good old days when lesser series were made but everything from the plot, script, acting, etc… Were all better versus the redundant dramas of today that are either remade or they take the same elements and make a series trying to make it original. They have milked all of the cows dry,

  5. This is gonna be a bust, as everyone will compare the remake to the original, and remakes can never surpass the original, at least not this close apart.

I can’t comment on HXM as I simply haven’t seen him act much. However, Hsu Chi, is not even a good actress for the role, compared to Gianna Jun. Gianna is a way better actress than Hsu Chi ever will be, not to mention, far better in looks as well. Every time Hsu Chi talks it annoys the hell out of me.

      1. Yup I think she is more pretty and hot compare to JJH.
What so funny? Haha LOL don’t tell me everyone should have the same taste with you?

Beside beauty is in the eye of the beholder 🙂

    1. Shu Qi is definately a no no. Her cantonese has not improved a bit since donkey years. In fact I think Charmaine Seh can take up the role much better. But seriuosly nobody can beat the original cast from the drama itself.

  6. Kim Soo Hyun may not be handsome, but he has onscreen charisma. I never understood the hype about this guy from his other hit dramas and movies up until I watched this drama, My Love From Another Star. Then it hit me like an arrow. Wow! This guy can act. Kim Soo Hyun does have a great body, physique, did you not watch the shower scene? LOL I dislike remakes, but I guess, it’s okay since it’ll be the Chinese version of it, it’ll be exciting and different.

    1. I agree with you. It took my friends a while to convince me to check on Kim Soo Hyun. When I watch him act, I was mesmerized. He has the charisma and he can definitely act.

    2. Yes,when you act,it is much much more that just physical appearance/looks. You need that positive aura and charisma.

    3. Agree with Joo. It is his on screen charisma. I don’t watch Korean dramas, till I watch this. So different.

  7. Uhm…lol…I havent seen any Chinese drama that has enough good effects that can even be compare to the low ratings Korean drama has yet and now they want to do this remake?! Hahaha…

  8. Oh dear god please no…it’s going to be so embarrassing to watch them completely fck it up. And really, Huang Xiaoming? Ugh

  9. I enjoy watching this korean drama. it’s definitely better than the tvb drama nowadays

    1. For me personally, I like both cultures since both have their own style in producing dramas. Obviously there are good and bad dramas in both cultures,

But in terms of the quality of the production, I think Korean dramas does take the lead since they have relatively reasonable amount of time to film whilst comparing with tbb, tbb is more quantity over quality as they are rushed with time to get it all done within a matter of weeks in order to air episodes daily (not to mention their editing isn’t the best.)

  10. Korean dramas are much better than TVB. To be honest I didn’t finish the recent Outbound Love and didn’t wish to continue watching SIAC and Gilded Chopstick. I want to start on this Korean series instead because it’s very popular now.

    1. It really depends on which Korean dramas you watch. There are some Korean dramas that started good, but then had a crappy ending or had repetitive elements.

      * nudges Big and Crazy Love *

    2. It really depends on which Korean dramas you watch. There are some Korean dramas that started good, but then had a bad ending or had repetitive elements.
      Eg: Big, Crazy Love.

      1. Yea,it varies from series to series. I have seen many k dramas and only like a handful of them. I think their shorter modern series are better than their ancient series though. Their ancient series need a lot of work in many aspects and areas.

  11. This is a good drama.. But way too overrated!
I don’t understand what so hype? The plotline is quite simple and nothing really new exactly…

      1. You think My Love From The Stars is overrated? You must’ve not watched The Heirs. Most overrated Korean Drama of 2013.

      2. actually there are many many good dramas that are underrated these days in korea 🙁

      3. Maybe everyone is bored and have nothing to do. It is the era of crap dramas after all.

The Heirs is overrated. The last Korean drama I enjoyed was “Can You Hear My Heart”.

  12. No, I don’t wanna watch a remake. Same story but played by different people. Rather keep my time for something else.

  13. Just reading the comments but why do people say KSH has a bad personality? I heard he was just kinda shy! and HXM does not fit the alien role I don’t know why but he seems too mature or something to be the alien. I think Kai Ko would be a better fit because the alien is supposed to young looking right? Please not Fan Bing Bing or Angelababy as CSY… this drama is going to be bad if the graphics aren’t as good as the Korean version.

  14. I don’t think ShuQi have the right charisma as JJH in CSY role though. But that’s for the investor to decide who to cast XD

For myself, choice is to watch in cinemas or not.

  15. A woman here, and I think Gianna Jun has an amazing charisma since the first movie I saw her in. Shu Qi is fine, but she carries a different aura than JJH.
