“Overheard 3”: A Battle for Property Development Rights

New thriller film, Overheard 3 <竊聽風雲3>, will be released in Hong Kong on June 5, 2014. With its first two installments revolved around police corruption and the stock market, this third installment will focus on battles for land development rights. Overheard 3 stars Sean Lau (劉青雲), Louis Koo (古天樂), Daniel Wu (吳彥祖), Gordon Lam (林家棟), Alex Fong (方中信), Dominic Lam (林嘉華),  Zhou Xun (周迅), and Michelle Ye (葉璇).

Alex, Sean, Gord0n, Louis, and Dominic portray a group of brothers coming from a village in the New Territories district of Hong Kong. Together, they fight for property rights with real estate developers in order to protect their homeland. Throughout the battle, the brothers begin to face disputes amongst themselves due to conflicting interests. Meanwhile, Daniel portrays the ultimate bugging expert. The film mainly reflects the housing issues in Hong Kong.

Alex will surprise the audience by sporting a complete new look that is hard to recognize. For his character’s long-hair looks, Alex had to wear a wig, since there was not enough time to have his hair grow out to the appropriate length prior to filming. “I’ve always wanted long hair, and I’m still happy with a wig,” he said.

A Tragic Ending

Sean spilled Overheard 3 will yield a tragic end, where every character has an unhappy conclusion. He hopes to stray away from dark storylines in the future and would gladly opt for lighthearted optimistic films. Sean explained his choice, “Something more relaxing and without too many people dying. Our society is already full of unhappy news. I don’t want there to be too much sadness. Can the characters just not die off?”

Although the cast consists mostly of men and lacks gender diversity, Sean expressed it was not a boring environment to work in. In fact, he joked he finds it more comfortable and fun, “I can’t even chat loudly when I work with women!” Having participated in many films with a focus on men in the past, Sean added that with new directors and fresh faces each time, the experiences were all exciting in different ways.

  1. Just saw it two days ago and it was great. As Sean (who looked very trim after weight loss) said it has a sad ending with all the leads dying off (apart from Daniel).

What I like most is they’ve got a handful of veteran TVB actors in them and it was great. Zhou Xun’s cantonese is not bad at all and I love those ‘village twangs’.

  2. It’s funny, I enjoy HK dramas precisely because they don’t feel the need to shoehorn in a female for no reason other than sex appeal like Hollywood does.

So sick of US movies/video games with teen angsty, emo, girls with boy troubles.

I’ll take a dramatic male dominated HK movie anyday! Weird how each region seems to specialize in casting like that.
